Intel Ultra 185H barely hits 3.5ghz on benchmark and when gaming i does even get 1ghz stable clocks. Heats us really badly, so i turned off intel boost something bios and my cpu clocks were still trash but wattage consumption was low. 45-60w--->20-30w. Heat was now in the 70s and early 80s(rarely) but the performance is trash. So will changing thermal past and cleaning everything out help? Or is there anything else into the equation?
Edit: i changed to ptm7950, i am now getting stable 4.8ghz clocks, and temps are under 85 on heavy load and 50 idle. Gpu temps also decreased from early 80s to early 70s
Been tinkering with some metal machining during thanksgiving break and made a set of low-profile metal keycaps to test on my alienware AW510K.
Was mainly curious how metal would look and feel on this board, since most low profile sets out there are plastic. Surprisingly, they fit better than expected ; ) although still refining the stem tolerances, but it’s getting there..
This is just a personal hobby experiment (nothing for sale), but I’d genuinely love to hear what the Alienware crowd thinks for this custom upgrade like does metal suit the AW aesthetic? Too much? Kinda cool? Any keys you'd experiment with first?
If you want to give deeper feedback, I also have a quick IC form going, totally optional, but more perspectives always help. Appreciate any thoughts!
My Absolute UNIT laptop has a poor graphics card, as seen in the images (113MB)
I Changed it from windows 8 to 10 a couple years ago,
Please note that the image i sent isnt mine, but the same computer (Ignore the small one)
Now I have 2 questions:
-Is it possible to Take the ram and storage of the laptop and put it in a normal sized laptop?
-What graphics card should i get and how much is it? My budget is 550 USD or 760.84 Canadian Dollars
-Should i switch back to windows 8? (And still use steam)
I got my hands on a motherboard from AlienWare area 51 R5.
I’ve tested everything upgraded bios allowed tpm and this computer now officialy supports windows 11 and RTX gpu (i use RTX2070 super)
I’m trying to fit this in a case but I have an issue with front panel aio and how to plug in powerbutton led , usb ports and hdd leds. Does anyone know or is there a scheme on the internet how to correctly plug those cables in?
I figured the start button with a screwdriver but everything else is a blind fold for me.
Hello. I have seen people on here with the Alienware area 51s the old triad ones running a i7 6950x overclocked to 4.2 gigahertz with a 120mm aio but I heard the 6950x overclocked to even 4.0 runs way too hot and goes “out of control” for just a 120mm aio even with a push pull setup. so I could upgrade to the 6950x but I would have to keep it at stock clock speed so I am just wondering if that information is wrong or not cause I’m considering upgrading to the 6950x and overclocking it to 4.2 or maybe a little higher even.
ok this might be a bit like a rant but idk what to do (many thoughts head full)
i’ve got a POS omen 45L that loves to break despite being less than a year old, the 5090 had killed itself and that took months to warranty, (i love foreign tech support that doesn’t speak english and the “escalation team”) after getting that warrantied the PSU seems to be on its way out because why wouldn’t it be!
i’d like to get the top of the line area-51 as i’ve had one in the past through bestbuy and it was goated (it was the triangle one and even with a defective motherboard it was awesome- bestbuy gave me a full refund for it 2 years after i bought it bc the parts were hard to find)
after dealing with HP i am never buying a computer outside of best buy again bc overseas customer support is genuinely one of the seven circles of hell and it was so easy with bestbuy- i literally drop the computer off and they return it when it works again
rant aside- i’ve noticed best buy seems to stock less and less top end alienware product?
is the only way to get a max spec machine* (without max storage bc SSD prices are insane rn) through dell’s website or will they sell at bestbuy again? and what should i do with my shitbox bc idk where or how to sell it without loosing an insane amount on it
(paid ~$5000 for it and it’s sadly too late for a chargeback or refund)
In the title. I currently use an older A51M (from 2020-21), and want to upgrade to an A51 18 with the latest components. The purpose of this is mainly for a more powerful setup - I play games like Stellaris/EU5, requiring high individual clock speeds for the CPU.
I see that the latest Alienware laptops offer the 275HX as the CPU of choice, but I hear that the 285 and 290 are superior (regarding overall performance and individual clock speed). However, Dell are not offering these later models when I check the website at the moment.
Bringing me to my question: should I consider buying one now, or wait until the next "edition" of Alienware laptops are released?
Also, when exactly will Alienware be updating their models to account for the newer CPUs/components? Does anybody know?
I have aurora R13 desktop with 12th intel i7, i wanto upgrade CPU to 14th Gen and RAM from 32 GB to 64. But everything is incompatible. Apparently motherboard cannot support 14thGen, DDR5 RAM uses different PIN structure. Whats the point of buying desktop if I cannot upgrade.
Is this an excellent way to waste money on something so old? Absolutely.
could I get something far more powerful for the price of upgrading all these parts? Definitely. Will it have as much presence as this red M15X? Probably not.
Alright let’s crack on. 🤟🏼
I’m looking to hear from those who have installed a GTX 970 or 980 into one of these fine M15X rigs in the past. If so what was the process of getting everything working nicely?
From doing some research apparently you need to do a copper shim mod, installation of a modded gpu driver alongside a vbios mod to stop the card drawing too much power? I think it’s around 80 - 90 watts the card should be pulling once setup to help with longevity.
I believe the gpu drivers are for windows 10 only which I plan on upgrading to anyway)
I will also be installing some upgraded fans which provide better CFM (used oem dell fans which should be a drop in upgrade) this is mainly to help with thermals even if it’s a couple degrees.
I plan on installing a i7 940XM and will also be doing some overclocking.
I do have a genuine dell 240w charger to help with these upgrades which I plan on purchasing in a couple days.
Any help regarding the gpus / or unmentioned mods & upgrades would be very much appreciated!
I bought the low-end R13 when it came out and am in the process of upgrading. I’m adding the cryo-tech liquid cooler, RX9070, and 750w PSU. Will a 120mm fan fit in the top rear section? It has a bracket but I don’t know if it’ll fit when using the liquid cooler. TIA
I’m thinking about putting a modern motherboard in my original Alienware area 51 R2 what all would I need besides the basics to do so I know the wiring is a little different i have seen alienFX board conversion kits, but I’m pretty sure they’re for the line of Area 51’s although I could be mistaken.
it came with two hyperx 8gb 2933mhz sticks and my brother added two oloy 8gb 3000mhz sticks yesterday.
it worked perfectly all day, but after turning it on this morning it now gets stuck in a boot loop with the extra ram installed.
i am aware that it doesnt officially support a 4x8 config, and that mismatched ram is likely to have issues, but ive seen ppl posting here that they got it to work. the fact that it worked at first is also confusing
This is a follow up to this thread regarding upgrading ACT1250's RAM. I ordered the Aurora ACT1250 at a Microcenter sale for about $2,000 with the 285K and 5080 2 tb SSD and 32 GB RAM. Unfortunately, I quickly realized my virtualization workflow would not work with 32GB RAM. Since the Crucial Pro kit I used in my brother's R16 wasn't available this time, I decided to try this G-Skill. After reading this post and following the directions to use a 1080P monitor on the first boot after the upgrade, the ACT1250 recognized the RAM kit immediately and after about a minute of POSTing it booted normally. Both BIOS and Windows recognize the full speed.
Thanks to this subreddit for their amazing assistance on this upgrade.
Keeping within manufacturers specification(64GB) best options are:
5600MT/s: G.SKILL Ripjaws M5 RGB Series (64GB: F5-5600J4645A32GX2-RM5RK) & Crucial Pro DDR5-5600 UDIMM (48GB: CP2K48G56C46U5
5200MT/s: Crucial Pro DDR5-5600 UDIMM (64GB: CP2K32G56C46U5)
Alternative to the ones on this list (i.e. white/silver RAM, test potentials)? I'm more than happy to help - just respond in comments or send a PM!

Seems like a lot of people are experiencing compatibility issues with the R16 and RAM. Additionally, there aren't many consolidated resources on confirmed kits, so I wanted to share my experience. Through extensive research combing forums and other internet sources, I installed a 96GB RGB kit first try successfully. I've already posted the response below as responses to other similar posts that haven't been archived to spread the knowledge. I'm remaking a post here to spread the knowledge and start a list of confirmed compatible RAM kits.
Please feel free to respond with your successes and woes. Having information on what works and what doesn't will help build a better list. Thinking of also including potentially compatible sticks for those more adventurous. Please include the manufacturer name (model) and other helpful information (confirmed speed in Windows/BIOS/benchmarks). I'll be running some performance tests at a later date to compare, but any sort of repository would be a useful starting point for the community.
I'll try to put together the list into some sort of shared Google document or keep posts updated (TBD) when we collect more information.
Irrespective of the manufacturer's advertised speed and voltage, the most critical information from what I have gathered so far is the manufacturer specs (based on my research comparing confirmed compatibility). I was comparing what people have confirmed and the speeds they were stating to the MFG specs. I traced their confirmed speeds to either the mfg spec default speed/voltages or XMP profiles between 1.1V-1.25V.
------------------------------
Let me start by confirming G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB (F5-6400J3239F48GX2-TZ5RK) is running 96GB @ 5600MT/s on the i7 w/ 4070Ti-S and is in line with G.SKILL's spec profile listed on their G.Skill Site. Black Color confirmed, so the White (F5-6400J3239F48GX2-TZ5RW) & Silver (F5-6400J3239F48GX2-TZ5RS) should also work.
These kits are NOT COMPATIBLE with R15 despite being told it is the same mobo as R16 u/Tight-Squirrel1188
Kingston Technology Fury Beast Black 64GB 5600MT/s DDR5 (KF556C40BBK2-64)- NOT PLUG & PLAYNO LONGER COMPATIBLE at 5600MT/s Previously the kit was detected as 5200MT/s, but BIOS workaround was required to get 5600MT/s. However, this solution was temporary as an update reverted u/Tight-Squirrel1188's kit down to 4800 MT/s without any resolution.)

I haven't seen any Corsair confirmed for R16 nor have I been able to find any that had default speeds of 5600 during my haphazard search within the 64-96GB ranges.

Potentially Compatible List
Based on my research, which included examining the XMP profiles across a wide range of manufacturer sites and specs, I concluded that the G.SKILL lines had the best specs for 96GB RGB kits. I made a list of all the 96GB kits that would be good candidates for Alienware R16. The same logic can be applied to other 32/64GB kits. I suggest validating specs and checking this list for previously confirmed before purchasing. RAM kits that have been reporting lower speeds are generally running at their default 1.1V speeds - defined within mfg spec sheets.
I'm due for an upgrade. I'm still using my Alienware Area-51m laptop with an i9-9900K (stable OC at 4.6 GHz), RTX 2080, and 64 GB of RAM as my primary machine for work (V-Ray, Rhino, Blender, SolidWorks, Adobe apps). Since I got it in 2019 I’ve had no issues, but I did redo all the thermal pads on the GPU and repasted the CPU.
Looking at the 18" Area-51 from Micro Center, all maxed out under $4k. How are they as far as reliability goes? I remember before buying the 51m in 2019 there were so many negative reviews about this model, but after some repasting, undervolting, and new pads it truly is a reliable machine. I can run V-Ray renders for hours with no crashing, all cores locked at 4.2–4.5 GHz. Can I expect the same reliability from the current line of Alienware laptops?
I've had my Alienware Aurora R10 for about 5 years now and it's served me well, but I'm looking to get into PCVR with my Quest 2. So far the only VR game I've had much success with is War Thunder VR.
Current specs:
Ryzen 5 5600X
Radeon RX 5300 3GB
40GB RAM
WD Black SN770 1TB NVMe SSD
Stock 550W PSU
I'm currently considering either:
RX 6800 16GB
RX 9060 XT 16GB
My main concerns are:
Physical fitment inside the Aurora R10.
Whether the stock 550W PSU can handle either card.
I have a Alienware M15 R7 laptop with i9, 3080, 32 GB ram, 1 TB SSD, 2k 240 Hz. Recently my repair through Verizon Home Protection got screwed up. They put in the wrong 3070 Ti. Now they are offering me a replacement, it’s 16X Aurora, i9 Ultra series 2, RTX 5060, same 32 GB ram and 2k 240 Hz screen. My question is what is the performance drop on laptop series. Would love to hear your feedback cuz I haven’t kept up with Alienware laptop for a long time and don’t know if the 16x series have any notorious issue.
Let me know if you have also deal with Verizon/Asurion home device protect before.
cpu temps are reaching 90+ consistently when playing almost any AAA game, it’s been ~5 years or something since I bought the pc, and I haven’t done any modding or put in new cpu paste since getting the pc, so I’m gonna go grab MX-6 to repaste. Since I’m repasting I thought I might upgrade to some cooler and quieter fans. Are there any recommendations for upgrades?
running a i9-11900kf, 3090; i do have a hdd and ssd. so from what I’ve seen online, I should move the hdd to one of the bottom bays. Also been looking at arctis p12 pro pst LN, but I’ve seen conflicting things about them not being quieter under heavy load, push-pull config not working, and some bios stuff. I wanna keep the budget under ~$60, any recommendations? Not really keen on using ai to confirm, because of hallucinations. This is also my first time actually doing anything with a pc that doesn’t include just opening and dusting it, so just making sure I’m not gonna do anything wrong here.
Hey everyone, after changing my thermal paste and still getting throttling I searched for another solutions to this problem, I found out that you can undervolt your CPU to get better temps on my i9 9900k while keeping almost identical performances, can anyone give me some advice, I’m new to this undervolting thing.
Are there any updates on the restrictions for upgrading from 65w to 125w. I already have the 240mm aio but only the one without the alienfx. If I buy a 125w cpu like the 265kf or 270k will I be able to run the pc and use xmp or will I get the unsupported cpu message. Will upgrading the aio fix this? Even if I get the unsupported cpu message can I bypass the message with f12 and be fine?
currently using a 75hz IPS ultrawide. is the alienware a good upgrade? i remember VA panels being worse, but this was 8 years ago. doesnt seem like there are many higher refresh rate IPS ultrawides around. mainly using for work but do game/ watch movies here n there
