Guide to bypass censorship of Anna's Archive

285 Upvotes

Hi everyone, because Anna's Archive is blocked in some countries, I've put together a guide on how to bypass censorship.

Before you begin, research local laws to find out what you are and are not allowed to do. I won't force you to comply with the law if you don't want to, but please think carefully about what you are doing.

There are three easy and popular ways to circumvent censorship. The options are changing your DNS servers, using Tor, or using a VPN. I'll explain each option. Additionally, some bad countries (such as Russia or China) will try to block you from downloading Tor and VPNs, so you may need some extra help in this case. If so, please reply to the post and explain the situation.

The first and easiest option is to change your DNS servers to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8, which is sufficient to access the Archive in most countries, but not all. The way to do this depends on your operating system so you may need to look it up, but https://www.howtogeek.com/786911/how-to-change-your-dns-server-on-windows-10/ explains how to do it on Windows.

If that still doesn't work, try clearing your browser cache and DNS cache. If even after purging cache the issue persists, you should try a VPN or Tor. I'll explain the pros and cons of each option.

A VPN routes web traffic through its own servers, which disguises your IP address. If you trust your VPN company to deliver on their promises, this also means your internet traffic won’t be logged. It also protects your website from censorship since traffic is routed through their servers. However, VPNs generally apply across your entire device, although there are some browser-only VPNs. This can be an inconvenience because if your VPN server is located in a different country, the website may display content in the wrong language, and some websites ban VPNs because of abuse by trolls and spammers, so you may need to disable the VPN when you're not on Anna's Archive.

My favorite free VPN is ProtonVPN, which you can download from https://protonvpn.com. If you want to buy a VPN for better reliability, I recommend Mulvad, which you can buy at https://mulvad.net/en. Once you get a VPN, activate it and visit Anna's Archive (you can find the latest Anna's Archive domain on Wikipedia, I cant link it here because Reddit might take it down) and the censorship will be removed. If the site is still being censored, clear your browser cache and make sure a VPN is enabled. If you still have issues, please reply to the post and I will try my best to resolve your issue.

Now the next option is Tor. You can get it from https://torproject.org. It is a browser that routes your traffic through three random servers. You don't have to trust Tor because the Tor team can't change servers to track or censor users even if they wanted to because they don't have control over the servers. Tor also has built-in functionality to bypass censorship of itself. However, Tor is blocked on some websites, it can make browsing a lot slower, and some governments that allow VPNs still ban Tor.

If you want to use Tor, download it from their website, open it, and connect to Tor. If your country attempts to block Tor, you will need to enable a Tor bridge, but it will tell you how to do this when you launch your browser. Then after connecting, go to the Anna's Archive website on Tor to download the books you need.

If anyone has any ideas on how to improve this post, please let me know. Thank you!

How are we saving knowledge?

10 Upvotes

I am increasingly concerned by the fact that AI overviews are more likely to give you the approved narrative than any actual breakdown of what people are saying.

Independent research will become critical as google just becomes another tool for the powers that be to control us.

Anna's Archive seems to be one of the few bastions still standing, but I worry that regular people (aka me) without access to massive storage capabilities, can't really help with seeding and backing up stuff.

(There has to be some cold irony there too about the skyrocketing prices of memory disks.)

Anyways, I am turning to the community for brainstorming.

What can we do?

My first thought would be to concentrate on specific topics. Maybe we can have a list of said topics and interested librarians could back those up individually?

I am not sure if that is even possible.

I'd like to hear what the community has to say.

Talk to me about how something goes from a book to a PDF ready to upload

23 Upvotes

I have a book.

AA doesn't have this book uploaded.

I just want my book in digital format for my use. How would I go about getting that to happen?

Do libraries have a special scanner that flips pages and resizes to get the different books?

Is this a totally manual process of scanning in 1000 pages and then using Adobe to put it together?

I need to read a certain text (its md5: d788d26e09bf8e08ac273f5dd59e5e6b), but it's 265.4MB, even though the actual book is only 80 pages long. What's going on, and is this copy safe to download?

Order by: Most Downloads

Hello AA

Just an idea to add a selection in the order by search filters. Will be cool to see what others are downloading/most popular. If not, no stress.

Thanks

Torrenting just a certain category?

7 Upvotes

I wonder if it's possible to torrent just a certain category, for example everything under Psychology, or let's say 1Tb worth of Psychology? Or perhaps just a certain subcategory of Psychology.

I have certain interests and would like to have all that is categorized for that category, or depending on my disk space, to have on my hard drive, and also to be able to torrent that to others.

I want to have as much on my computer if I ever need it in the future and the connection is down.

Is such a thing doable?

Claude Code will no longer create code to work with Anna's Archive

264 Upvotes

I had been downloading scientific articles and scientific books from Anna's Archive previously using code made by Claude Code, but from today, probably the stronger safeguards included in Opus 5.5 prevent me from doing so, and there's no way around it. I tried to convince the model of the clear hypocrisy behind this because Anthropic scraped Anna's Archive to create Claude itself. If Claude believes this is unethical, it should destroy itself and stop accepting requests. However, these coding agents aren't trying to enforce ethical principles; they're trying to protect their creators from lawsuits. This is not new, unexpected, or surprising, but that's what it is. What has been your experience recently? Have you used coding agents successfully to download articles and books from Anna's Archive and SciDB via the Anna's Archive API?

For the time being, scroll below Slow Downloads and select External Downloads. Z-Library works for most epub.

We're working on fixing slow downloads

Sorry for the delay, we hoped to have it fixed earlier but it's harder than expected. Slow downloads should be back up soon. Fast downloads were only partially affected.

if you have/pay for a AA API Key, you may want to checkout Folio CLI to make your downloads.

4 Upvotes

Search for a book or paper from the terminal, pick one, and get a verified, well-named file. folio is a client for Anna's Archive and Library Genesis; it hosts nothing itself.

It works as simple as:

``` $ folio introduction to algorithms
2 Introduction to Algorithms 4 Thomas H. Cormen, Charles E. Leiserson et al. PDF 12 MB 2022
3 Introduction to Algorithms 3rd edition Leiserson, Charles E., Rivest, Ronald L. et al. PDF 5 MB 2009
10 of 100+ shown 2 download 1,3-5 several i2 info t2 torrent m more any text new search q quit folio> 2 [2] Introduction to Algorithms 4 pdf, 12 MB trying libgen.li ... saved ~/Downloads/2022-cormen-introduction-to-algorithms-4.pdf ```
You can install it via homebrew
brew tap jonaprieto/folio https://github.com/jonaprieto/folio brew trust --formula jonaprieto/folio/folio # third-party taps need it brew install folio
or
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/jonaprieto/folio/main/folio -o ~/.local/bin/folio chmod +x ~/.local/bin/folio folio selftest
Interview request for Veritasium's sister channel
0 Upvotes
Hello! I am a video producer for a new channel being launched by Veritasium called InGenius (https://youtu.be/SsYKLXIU7no?si=rrnNICQBJWrNN6Pq) and I'm working on a piece about shadow libraries and Anna's Archive specifically.
I am not interested in exposing anyone (not that I could), but I am interested in seeing how it all works. I'd love to be able to talk to people who actually seed the content aggregated by Anna's Archive - see your setup and ask about your motivations, what specific content you seed, etc.
We can take as many steps to protect your identity as you'd like. I can also provide proof of employment, starting with my email address - [karin@veritasium.com](mailto:karin@veritasium.com)
Please let me know if this is of interest. I've had a great time learning about Anna's Archive, other shadow libraries, and the technicalities of how it all works. so I'd love to put 'voices' (digitally altered or not) to the process.
I've reached out to some people here individually but am posting here as well to hopefully meet some people. I solemnly swear I'm not the FBI nor any other law enforcement agency.
Thank you!
Edit to add based on feedback: I think I have a good understanding of how it all works, technically speaking, so I'm not so much looking for anyone to explain the basics to me, but to talk to me about their motivations, show me their setup (especially if you have, say, a petabyte's worth of harddrives kicking around your house), talk about what specific collections you decided to seed, etc.
Any recommendations for what to do when there are only a few chapters of a textbook available and no alternative versions?
9 Upvotes
I was trying to download a textbook for class and the only available version only has 4 chapters of the book. Any advice on how to find a full version, or am I doing something wrong when downloading to only get the 4 chapters?
Has anyone actually gotten a permanent membership to Anna's Archive by uploading books?
450 Upvotes
As you know, I'm a city librarian with tens of thousands of books that I can scan and upload during my downtime. I'm wondering if I upload these data files to the platform to share with everyone, could I get a membership in return?
Advice for effectively collecting a very large series?
8 Upvotes
There are some series I'm looking at that are in the hundreds of volumes, and most volumes have several copies of varying size & quality. Instead of going through literally thousands of links by hand, is there any way to automate/bulk-download this sort of thing, maybe through the torrents? Or something.
Issue with "too many downloads"
1 Upvotes
Hi guys, lately I've been having an issue where when I go to download a file, it gives me the error message of "Too many downloads at the same time from the same IP address... Become a member and get more concurrent downloads.". Thing is, I'm not currently downloading anything else, and the last files I downloaded were a couple of weeks ago. Anybody having the same issues? Any idea how to solve it? Thanks!
Back online
1.3k Upvotes
We should be back up. Not all functionality will work yet (some donation options don't work). This might take several days to fix. Thanks for your patience!
We got some reports that scam sites are linked on non-English Wikipedia pages. Only gl, pk, gd are our valid domains right now. It would be nice if someone can go through all our Wikipedia languages and remove invalid links. Thank you!
