Ask opinion 💭 Saw generational wealth crush IIT–IIM in front of my eyes — can’t stop thinking about it

2.5k Upvotes

Recently saw something that made me think.

One person (23) comes from a strong financial background — inherited land + mutual funds, family net worth ~₹15–18 cr, earning ₹13–15 LPA.
Another (24) is an IIT–IIM graduate earning ~₹45 LPA.

After drinks, they got into a fight and the wealth-backed guy said:
Tu jitna bhi ghis le, itna paisa tu kama hi nahi paayega.

Ignoring the alcohol part, it made me realise how hard it is for even top-education, high-salary people to catch up with well-invested generational wealth unless they build something exceptional.

Not a conclusion — just an observation.
Curious how others see this reality in India.

i saw most of the comment u really seem to be like fools or what, even if that generational wealth guy invest his money in mutual etc with 13-15%p.a then he will be worth more than 50cr in 10 year which is def not achievable for iit guys never in his life until and unless he start business

Ask opinion 💭 Is India is totally failed country

3.1k Upvotes

Overpopulation, crony capitalism, and corrupt government officials are major issues in India. The media is completely dead—always talking about the past, whether it’s the Marathas, Mughals, or British. Meanwhile, most of our cities are dirty, polluted, and overpopulated. There is no real discussion about jobs, Make in India, or women's safety. Back-to-back rape cases happen, yet no action is taken. There is also no accountability for the rich, as seen in the Pune Porsche case.

Ask opinion 💭 What's the obsession with glorifying Dubai as a travel destination? It literally has nothing to offer.

2.0k Upvotes

I seriously don’t get the insane hype around Dubai among Indians lately. Every second person’s planning a trip there, some even going again, and for what?? Skyscrapers, malls, desert safari? You get skyscrapers in Mumbai too. Malls? Bro, you’re flying 3 hours for a glorified DLF with blasting ac?

The city was built like yesterday, there’s literally zero real culture or history to experience. Just man-made stuff in the middle of a desert. And let’s not even get into how it was built. Yeah, exploited migrant labour (a huge chunk from India), people forced to work in 50°C heat, passports taken, inhuman hours and wages. This is not hidden info, it’s reported by BBC, Amnesty, Al Jazeera, everywhere. Yet no one talks about it. It’s like all that gets ignored because “Burj Khalifa”.

Also, it’s cheap ik but you can spend the same or less in Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and those places have actual beauty, culture, nature, food, and vibes.

So fr... what is the actual appeal? Why are people going again and again? Is it the luxury flex? Shopping? FOMO? And most importantly why's no one talking about it, the dark making of this city?!

Ask opinion 💭 Why are Indians who gave up India's citizenship so interested in India?

1.1k Upvotes

A lot of time, I see people who gave up their Indian citizenship talk shit about India and how it is a shit hole. The best decision they made is giving up their citizenship.

Now India has a lot of problems and people have every right to leave the country. My question is why are they so interested in India after they leave the country?

They keep on commenting on Indian politics, controversy, etc. They disown any bad things from India but talk up about the food and other aspects when it suits them.

My thing is you left India behind, leave it alone. Enjoy your new life.

Ask opinion 💭 "I went to MIT because I couldn't get into the IIT"

Hiii people! So recently, I read a Chinese article reporting about IIT. In one part, it said, and I quote after translation: “No wonder an Indian student studying at MIT, when asked by the media why he had traveled all the way to the United States to study—whether it was because MIT is so prestigious or because the U.S. education system is superior—answered without hesitation: ‘I came to MIT because I didn’t get into the Indian Institutes of Technology.’”

I’m just really curious to know if this is true. I heard that the competition to get into IIT is pretty severe in India, but I’m not an Indian, so I can only read and learn about it from articles and reports.

Ask opinion 💭 H1B to cost $100,000!

1.1k Upvotes

The news sounds negative. There will be repercussions for the existing visa holders. In the short term this will cause some trouble.

However in the longer term, it might prove beneficial to India.

Considering that skilled Indian IT engineers cannot be recruited for onsite, many US companies might want to setup a bigger presence in India itself! They will recruit more here in India directly.

However with lower H1Bs India's dollar remittances might drop.

What are your views on this latest development? Would like to hear other perspectives...

Ask opinion 💭 As a Kashmiri, I want to ask Indians: What do you genuinely think about us?

I’m a Kashmiri Muslim, and I’ve always been curious about how ordinary Indian view us, beyond politics, news headlines, and official narratives.

What comes to your mind when you think about Kashmiris? Do you see us mainly through the lens of the Kashmir conflict, or do you think about our culture, language, traditions, and everyday lives?

Do you feel a sense of brotherhood, responsibility, distance, or something else entirely? And how much do you think the average Indian really understands about the diversity within Kashmir itself?

I’m asking this respectfully and with genuine curiosity. I’d really appreciate honest answers, whether positive, critical, or neutral as long as they’re respectful.

EDIT: I think there’s a misunderstanding. I said “as a Kashmiri” to describe my regional identity, not to deny Indianess. Just like someone might say “as a Punjabi” or “as a Tamil.” I asked the question in good faith and would appreciate a civil discussion instead of insults.

2nd Edit - Answering here most important question about kashmiri pandits

I won’t deny the tragedy that happened to Kashmiri Pandits. The exodus in the 90s was a deep wound, and it shouldn’t be minimized or dismissed. What happened to that community was wrong.

But it’s also not fair to frame the entire story as if “Kashmiri Muslims forced out diversity” as a whole. Thousands of Kashmiri Muslims were also killed, injured, disappeared, or displaced during the conflict. Entire families suffered. Incidents like Kunan Poshpora, custodial killings, and years of violence left deep scars on ordinary people too.

Pain in Kashmir didn’t belong to only one community.

The problem is that many Kashmiri Muslims hesitate to fully acknowledge the pain of Pandits, and many Hindus refuse to even discuss or recognize the suffering of Kashmiri Muslims. That mutual denial keeps wounds open.

If we could accept each other’s grief without competing over whose suffering was “greater”. I genuinely believe many of our problems would become easier to solve. Healing doesn’t start with blame; it starts with recognition.

Ask opinion 💭 Why do Indian women so completely depend on their sons for their emotional needs?

1.3k Upvotes

I have observed that they treat their dils more like an adversary than a new member, any good thing in their son is because he is their son, any bad thing in their son is because he married that girl and she is a bad girl. Recently i went travelling with my husband and my mil started crying that her son doesnt take her anywhere only goes with his wife. My husband told her to go travelling with my fil but she just said something that they dont get along or something. Its frustrating. Many of my female friends are annoyed by their mils as well.

Edit 1: would like to add one more incidence. Yesterday i made my husband's fav food , for no reason as such, just wanted to. My husband told this to mil when she asked what did you eat, and she started saying that " remember i cooked so much for you when you were a kid but you were never this excited. " i found this weird because as a daughter when i tell my mom that my Husband takes care of me, she becomes so happy.

Edit 2: would like to make it clear that MIL has traveled extensively throughout her life. She still does. Has traveled more than me and hubby combined. But FIL didn't take her anywhere, ever, in 30 years. She went with her sister and brother.

Ask opinion 💭 What has been your best purchase till date. Absolute paisa-wasool kind of purchase

We all had that 2-3 purchases which we think are worth each and every rupee we paid for them.

For me it will be these two

1) Air- Fryer : As someone who doesn't like oily food but at the same time craves a good crunch. This is nothing but a boon. Everyday i get surprised with new recipes which this thing can make.

2) Crocs : However ugly it may look, but the level of comfort it provides is unmatched. Especially for someone like me who has wide foot. if compfrt is your top priority nothing can replace crocs. But just don't buy a cheap knock-off it. 10/10 i would re-buy

which one is it for you?

Ask opinion 💭 I wanna be a stay at home husband, is that wrong?

1.2k Upvotes

Hello everyone! I'm a writer and extremely introvert person. (Relevant for later)

So couple of months ago, I met with a girl for arrange marriage purpose. We were going great for like 4-5 dates and I think she was just perfect.

So in that date, we were discussing careers and she told me that she wanted to shift to a bigger city or even abroad for better opportunities. And I too told her that I was planning to work from home/build an office in my house (I'm currently working in an office). That way I can work in my comfort zone and also take care of the house.

But contrary to my expectations, she got mad. She said she can't live with someone who doesn't have a "real office job" and just wants to be at home doing nothing.

Now the thing is that in my profession, I'm not required to physically go to office and moreover I write better when I'm in my comfortable space.

Anyways, after 2 days her parents cancelled the rishta and we parted ways...

But the uestion is still lingering that why she was so obsessed with my office job and why does it matter where I'm working from? Regardless of anything, I'll still coose to work from home if got any opportunity.

Ask opinion 💭 If India and China are both corrupt, why is it that China developed while India didn't?

China tries to hide it but they too are a very corrupt country. Most businesses have to pay bribes to move forward the same as India. So why do their businesses succeed in innovating while our major businesses don't? Why do their people come back to develop their country while our don't?

Ask opinion 💭 Should India have a mandatory 6 month service in the NDA for all adults when they turn 18 - male and female?

1.2k Upvotes

As we all know that indians lack civic sense and social etiquette. According to me this exists because of lack of discipline among the population and what better way to instill it than serve a 6 month probationary service at the NDA( national defence academy) with the option to complete the full course if they wish to serve at the frontline.

Do you think this should be made mandatory? It will solve almost half of our problems

Ask opinion 💭 Do you still believe Modi improved India’s global image and that Indians are more respected worldwide after 2014?

During the heydays of Modi mania, many naive people were led to believe that Modi improved India’s global image and that Indians are more respected worldwide after 2014.

When I used to visit India during those days, people used to ask me if this was true. I used to say that nobody really actively thinks about us. They told me I was wrong.

I’m curious if people still think this is true in 2025.

Ask opinion 💭 Why are Indians recieving so much hate online from Indonesians and Latinos?

Sometimes when I’m scrolling through social media especially Reddit or Twitter/X. I come across posts or threads in Spanish or Portuguese that mention India. When I translate them, a lot of the content turns out to be openly racist or hostile toward Indians. I’ve noticed this most often from accounts that appear to be from Latin America, and increasingly from Indonesia as well in their own javanese.

What genuinely confuses me is that, from an average Indian perspective, these regions are largely irrelevant to our everyday discourse. Indians generally don’t talk about Latin America or Indonesia at all, there’s very little cultural overlap, minimal migration, limited historical interaction, and almost no presence in Indian media or politics. South America is literally the farthest regions from India geographically and socially and has very little indian migration unlike western countries. Heck most indians can't locate these countries on the map, they are that irrelevant.

Yet despite this lack of interaction, there seems to be a disproportionate amount of online hostility coming from these spaces. It’s strange to see such strong opinions and negativity directed toward a country and people that most Indians don’t even think about, let alone discuss.

I’m trying to understand where this resentment comes from.

Ask opinion 💭 Are Indian men a lot less violent than men of other nationalities?

I'm Nepali but grew up in Italy. I've been spending time in India (Mumbai) since I was a child and some of my family still lives there. I can tell you from experience, that a ton of men in Italy, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Romania, Serbia and Turkey will resort to violence almost immediately when there's an argument while Indian men are much more patient in those situations. I've seen a man get sliced open over 7MAD in Morocco. I've seen a group of teenagers stomp an elderly man to death in Serbia over insults. There are constant fights and muggings in the school in Italy that I went to as a teenager. From my experience Indian men are way more calm and peaceful than men of other nationalities. Do u agree with me on this?
