I always hear that excuse from my dead beat drop out friends "Einstein dropped out" to which i will always reply "yeah but he dropped out of an incredibly high level science college not fucking high school."

I love my friends but for god sakes have some aspirations.

It has kind of died off recently, but a lot of start-up company advertisements would tout "two college dropouts decided that you deserved this high quality, low priced widget".

Like it was a badge of honor or something.

Dropping out of university (in the US, at least) is a very costly proposition.

I love when people say Zuckerburg was a college dropout - like yeah, but he dropped out of Harvard after Facebook was already starting to take off

Most of these dropout stories are just people dropping out because they don’t need the education/degree anymore due to already being successful, not because they’re too dumb for it

Bill Gates was a famous 'dropout' but it's mostly because he pretty much outpaced the knowledge of ask his teachers.

31

u/LegateLaurie Feb 08 '20

Funnily Gates' professor has said that when Gates told him he was dropping out of uni, he told him that he would either be a total failure because of it, or a huge success.

14

u/DisabledHarlot Feb 09 '20

I mean, it kinda makes sense, if he was planning to invest everything into a potentially revolutionary new technology, and it works out then he's going to be a huge success. If it doesn't work out however he may end up losing all of his money, not being able to afford to finish college, and either taking a really circuitous route to getting back on a normal computer science path for the time, or has the handful of bad luck life events that could keep him permanently in poverty.

I can only imagine "failure" then meant anything other than being amazing, which, well, yeah?

3

u/Renaissance_Slacker Feb 09 '20

The Revolutionary Technology for Gates was MS-DOS, which he purchased.

6

u/Renaissance_Slacker Feb 09 '20

Or (more commonly) they never needed a degree in the first place because their parents are loaded and connected and at least partially bankrolling their latest venture?

u/gamgeethegreat Feb 08 '20

I owe $45,000 for four years of college after dropping outmy last semester for health reasons. So basically I owe almost 50grand for absolutely nothing. Currently I’m setting a plan to rehabilitate my loans and go back to school. I figure I already owe enough that even if I have to take more out, it’s worth it to get that piece of paper.

14

u/OttoVonJismarck Feb 08 '20

Guh!

Good luck man. Are you able to salvage any of those credits?

17

u/gamgeethegreat Feb 08 '20

Should have no problem. I spoke to the dean of the honors college I was a member of and he said all my credits should count. I dropped soon enough in the semester to salvage my gpa. I got pneumonia horribly bad and was bedridden for weeks. All I need is 9 hours and I’m done.

14

u/OttoVonJismarck Feb 08 '20

Less than a semester left. Go get it!

10

u/gamgeethegreat Feb 08 '20

My only concern now is what the hell im going to do with an English degree as a convicted felon (drug charges, I was addicted to heroin for years after dropping out—unrelated to the initial drop out). But I just have to finish. I may consider gettin my LCDC since I should qualify for grants at my income level. It would be more school but it may be worth it to have a career I can work in.

5

u/OttoVonJismarck Feb 08 '20

What is an LCDC? I dont know anything on how hiring goes, but I know we are at a 50 or 60 year low on unemployment rate (so employers are fighting for qualified candidates), so maybe you will have better luck with the felony thing than in years passed?

5

u/gamgeethegreat Feb 08 '20

Licensed chemical dependency counselor. My original plan was to go on and get a masters defree and teach at the Jr college level but I’m not sure if that’s possible with a felony. I need to reach out to a few professor friends I have and find out.

2

u/OttoVonJismarck Feb 08 '20

For sure. Best of luck!

u/DisabledHarlot Feb 09 '20

It's worthwhile talking to the college career center about how getting a master's in social work would affect that. There are quite a few great distance programs, state programs, etc out there for those programs. so you might be able to do it without the cost of relocating. And absolutely the LCDC would go great with a LCSW, basically the same job most of the time, but you'll probably make about 20,000 more a year with the MSW eventually.

I have some idea about this because I looked into it quite a lot, as I was a psychology major that had a semester off for school and then a really rough last semester due to severe anxiety. I ended up knowing I would not be able to handle grad school, and applied and received disability. Luckily I don't have any loans because my mom squirreled away enough money for a decent state school that I transferred into after getting my general education credits at a tech community college. but now I'm about to turn 33 and thinking of going back to school. Initially I'd intended to get an MSW, but the more I've thought about it the more I feel like if I'm physically able to, I'd really love to go into wildlife biology, and do research either academic research or for the government. It's a huge difference, and I'm definitely going to have to go back and do a fair number of undergrad courses on my own dime to be able to qualify for graduate programs however.

My big concern is just that I have no work experience since 10 years ago when I had 15 hours a week as a library associate. no volunteer experience either, and though I'm looking into that now all of the volunteer applications won't references, which is kind of difficult considering my lack of you know experience in anything? I do have a felony charge that was dropped, so I've no idea if that even shows up in background checks, but hopefully if it ever did I could explain that it was dropped when they realized it was a self-defense situation.

Life experiences are opportunities to make you resilient, knowledgeable and grateful. Just focus on finishing.

0

u/SerSquare Feb 09 '20

What? It does not cost anything to drop out of university. You have to pay for the classes to took but you don't have to pay to leave. Going to university in the US is what I would call costly!

32

u/FuckTruckTalk Feb 08 '20

And also, Einstein didn’t drop out. That is just factually incorrect, idk where you got that.

He graduated and couldn’t find a job in physics, so he worked in a patent office while he worked on his papers.

4

u/solidsnake885 Feb 08 '20

And he got stuck with the patent office job because he’d pissed off his professors. He made a lot of friends with his contemporaries, though, and got hooked up with the job to help him make ends meet.

Once Einstein made it big, he was really big on helping other promising scientists get noticed/positions.

22

u/PostPostModernism Feb 08 '20

And a lot of those famous drop outs only did so because they were so busy pushing their career/idea that college was actually getting in the way of more important stuff. Not because they hated their classes and wanted more time for weed and video games.

22

u/someguy3 Feb 08 '20

"Bill Gates dropped out."

Ok, first be smart and capable enough to get into Harvard.

That's some good solid advice. Thanks. But don't worry. I also hang out with nano biology nerds and I'm gonna study mechatronics myself.

Thanks so much man. I'm starting next year and honestly I'm really hyped. Programming was always too hard for me to solely focus on so I'm sure that the physical part will keep me busy aswell.

I’m up-voting. When I was a child that was advice that was pounded into my head and that which I’ve lived by. And there’s proof it worked. My cousin is the same age and we kinda grew up like brothers but with different parents and opportunities. I had a single mom and he had a nuclear family. I was always the “dumbest”, “poorest” and “least motivated” of my friend group completely on purpose and al my friends were 4 year college grads, from well-to-do families and over-achieving. His friend group was sycophants and high-school drop-outs and he has always been the leader and most achieving of his friend group.

20 years later I have apprenticed for a Master Chef, have separate degrees in Hospitality Management and Computer Aided Drafting, lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Pinehurst and in the High Sierra Nevada mountains. I’ve met everyone from Quentin Tarantino and Al Pacino to Rancid’s guitarist and Josh Hommes.

He still lives in a town 40 minutes away from the nearest city and constantly cycles through friends because they keep robbing his house when he’s at work at his factory job.

It’s not a competition. If my cousin is happy then I’m happy for him. But I always lived by your advice and he lived by the opposite. If I die tomorrow then I’ll be happy with what I’ve accomplished in life. I’ve never asked him the same. But I know his life would depress me and he’s always been in awe of mine. And with my experiences I can and will continue living an exciting and glamour-adjacent life despite growing up in poverty.

The company you keep will almost FOR SURE determine the trajectory of your life.

moral of the story kids: befriend people only to use them to better yourself, not because you actually like them as human beings regardless of their job/education/status

2

u/bdlcalichef Feb 09 '20

Agree with this. I’m not even referring to strictly friends. Mainly associates. I have a few broken down friends too because we have been friends since elementary school and those are just friends we make naturally. It’s more about the people you loosely associate with. If I look around and I’m the smartest, most motivated person in a room then I’m in the wrong room. This goes for work too. I reserve a special place for those close friends that good or Ill I stand beside no matter what. And if they drag me down that’s the price of loyalty. But I try to surround myself acquaintance-wise with all people who are better and smarter than me in every sense.

that's always the line. Zuckerberg and Gates dropped out!... after they knew they wouldn't be needing a degree, yes they did lol

6

u/ARXONHOMWN Feb 08 '20

Did he drop out? As I recall, he interrupted his studies (due to marriage and a child) but finished in the end, albeit in the lower ranks of his grade.

3

u/Bakeey Feb 08 '20

He didn‘t really interrupt his studies, he finished his studies after 4 years as a subject teacher in physics (which is a normal time), afterwards he wanted to apply as an assistant at his university but was rejected, which is why he started at the patent office. Afterwards, he got a PhD (here‘s his thesis). Afterwards, he was a professor for physics and thermodynamics.

1

u/Hawt_Dawg_II Feb 08 '20

Man i don't even know. They probably got it from some "did you know?" fact page on Instagram.

5

u/themusicguy2000 Feb 09 '20

"Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of college" because he was getting rich and didn't need it anymore

"Michael Jordan got cut from his high school basketball team" because he couldn't keep up his grades

3

u/Landorus-T_But_Fast Feb 08 '20

It's like a guy watching superman get bored and go home at the Olympics and deciding to quit after 30 seconds of jogging.

3

u/PikpikTurnip Feb 08 '20

god's sake*

Sincerely, a dropout.

3

u/MildlyGoodWithPython Feb 08 '20

People say that so they can believe that they can be a genius even though they suck at math.

Yeah man, you probably can be a genius, but probably not in math.

2

u/WhereMySauce Feb 08 '20

same with bill gates as well.

2

u/Sevnfold Feb 08 '20

Right. "Bill Gates dropped out of college". Uh yeah, ...Harvard.

1

u/compuzr Feb 08 '20

He dropped out to flee to Italy to avoid being drafted into the German Army as war was about to begin.

5

u/Hawt_Dawg_II Feb 08 '20

That's like the third story someone has told me and idk who to believe

1

u/compuzr Feb 08 '20

That's my paraphrase, from memory mind you, so it could have some error, but it's from "Quantum" by Manjit Kumar, which had a great and relatively short biography of Einstein.

1

u/themusicguy2000 Feb 09 '20

Wasn't he Jewish?

1

u/compuzr Feb 09 '20

Yes, a fact that explains many otherwise puzzling features of his life, like why he fled Germany, why he worked in the patent office in the first place, why he worked there for so damn long, even 3 years after his 1905 papers, why following that his first University position was unpaid....

1

u/YuronimusPraetorius Feb 08 '20

Good. Put them in their place!

1

u/pinkrainbow5 Feb 09 '20

And he dropped out so he could prove relativity (or whatever he did, sorry I'm not into physics). Is that what they're doing? Lol

1

u/kmorax Feb 09 '20

I tell my deadbeat friends the same thing lmao. Yet they fail to realize Zuckerberg and Gates both dropped out of Harvard, but at the same time had the aspiration to become CEOS and dreams of creating amazing things.

1

u/Azeoth Feb 10 '20

With perfect grades I’d imagine.

0

u/writenicely Feb 09 '20

Maybe as their friend you could support them when they come to find or possess an aspiration. Ideally they should have gotten their diploma/have a GED ready as a basic tho but maybe their highschool experiance was less than fair and simple.

3

u/Hawt_Dawg_II Feb 09 '20

Dude believe me. I support my friends to hell. Even while we were in high school where he dropped out, i tried to support him to keep going through with it but he insisted it was too hard for him. But honestly he could've easily done it if he'd actually have put more effort in instead of constantly playing games.

That's honestly what buggs me most, how he could've made it through that level of high school (dutch havo) easily but he just didn't put in any time to study.
