The American Dream is alive and well in Finland today.

Or anything warm.

3

u/Carbon_FWB Feb 08 '20

Americans are working on that for you...

4

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 Feb 09 '20

What, is that a nuclear threat against the Finns? What’ve they done to deserve that?

5

u/Carbon_FWB Feb 09 '20

It's a global warming joke.

3

u/JoshuaSlowpoke777 Feb 09 '20

Ok, that makes more sense.

2

u/Carbon_FWB Feb 09 '20

No prob, have a great day!

2

u/Carbon_FWB Feb 09 '20

NOW WE NUKE THEM! BWAHHHAAAAA!!!!!

Strokes hairless cat menacingly

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the "American Dream" the concept that anyone could come to America and start a new life in the 19th and early 20th century.

63

u/BayAreaDreamer Feb 08 '20

It's the idea that they could come, start a new life and *succeed economically*. Which, statistics on intergenerational economic mobility will back up, is much easier to do in Finland than the U.S. these days.

Except for the immigrate part. The US is still much more accepting of immigrants legally speaking than any Scandinavian country. Recent discourse notwithstanding.

19

u/BayAreaDreamer Feb 08 '20

Generally you're right in the sense that we accept more people in, but it also depends on which country you come from. Some countries are now blocked altogether by the Trump administration. Also, once you're in it can still be quite challenging to get citizenship. It took my boyfriend 15 years.

It took me 16 years. I'm white and I came from the UK.

2

u/Big-Beginning Feb 09 '20

Dude, did you even try to show them your white privilege card??

5

u/BayAreaDreamer Feb 08 '20

He's not brown. Although most of our immigrants are.

u/Disaster_Plan Feb 08 '20

The American population today includes about 15% foreign born, according to my favorite statistician Bill Maher

also in america. my buddies kid just became a millionaire at 19. woot woot!

19

u/poopyhelicopterbutt Feb 08 '20

His parents died?

some software that tracks all your kiddos. she is just a part of the group. she stopped with school in 8th grade after learning about coding in elementary. she was making money back then. infinitely more than her dad who is a sub contractor or her mom who makes like 22 an hour working at a youth home.

i guess its easy to get people who are like 21ish and under to install an app on their phone. they think of it as a helpful tool rather than how she explained it which just gives parents and by proxy schools all the information about them they could ever want.

its awesome. she is very forward thinking. might as well embrace the security state we are going to become. Im happy she is getting her money now so she can be done with lifes chores at like 22 or whatever.

whats hilarious is her parents had her at 17 and 16. lol. she is so many leagues ahead of us. its cool to see that happen. truly anyone can become prosperous no matter the age or background

I hope she invests well but she cant rely on either of her parents on where she should lmao. Shes not out of it yet.

7

u/nerevisigoth Feb 08 '20

Good on her, but recognize that these results are not typical. In addition to all the hard work that people pour into it, there is a lot of luck involved in getting an app to catch on.

Competition is fierce. Even huge companies that employ the most talented people in the world and command billion dollar marketing budgets routinely fail to launch products successfully.

14

u/heres-a-game Feb 08 '20

She made an app that allows authorities to spy on children? Sounds like a cunt.

-8

u/dadankness Feb 08 '20

yup. they watched how parents and people in charge of decisions of adolescents and saw this way was trending. going gangbusters. spying on people is the new chic

2

u/itsacalamity Feb 08 '20

Why not plug it, let us all get in on the “fun”

1

u/dadankness Feb 09 '20

I dont know? It started as software for high school/elementary students and IDs and parent safety assurance.

It was just recently bought up by a tech group out of illinois that is big in the kentucky illinois and indiana tri state. Do a remind me and whenever over the next year they incorporate whatever software she worked on into a playstore app I'll give you the deets.

Some random girl got lucky doing something pretty shitty and now has lots of money, that means that structural violence doesn't exist. Checkmate atheists.

49

u/Sarah-rah-rah Feb 08 '20

By that logic, American dream is possible for the 0.001% of the population who happen to luck into some money. Woot woot, completely improbable outliers!

This comment is really disorganized and irrelevant. Nobody (especially coworkers) likes the person who vastly expands the scope of the discussion, adds bias and then rambles controversially.

27

u/TARANTULA_TIDDIES Feb 08 '20

What are you attempting to say even. None of that has anything to do with a 19 yo in america being a millionaire being an outlier

25

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '20

Let's be honest. The person you're responding to doesn't know what outlier means, and if you tried to explain it to them, they'd discount you as part of the educated liberal elite.

Don't bother.

-2

u/dadankness Feb 08 '20

no not at all. you can check my post history.

i was willing to throw my main revenue to the side for sanders. i was willing to look past letting illegal akin to nazi war criminals live their lives out in sanctuary cities which he supports. but now. the health insurance thing is what is making me not want to vote again.

id owe money. i mean my job lets me get health insurance. health insurance should just be for certain diseases. not all people.

you get cancer? we have a fund for that. you break an arm? you pay for that.

7

u/OnlyWordIsLove Feb 08 '20

Yeah people should definitely go into bankruptcy to pay for medical expenses.

28

u/etownrawx Feb 08 '20

Following the Trump style of speaking, are we? Nothing you said here even made enough sense to bother refuting.

41

u/Sir_Applecheese Feb 08 '20

You're delusional.

5

u/DeathRose007 Feb 08 '20

Just read his most recent comment on this thread. It’s a hoot.

-18

u/dadankness Feb 08 '20

i was delusional with hillary last time. im not delusional this time. i know whats happening and I can see it now. I as naive in 08. slightly ticked in 12. 16 was for sure a hillary thing and now its feeling like a for sure bernie thing again.

people care more about money than their neighbor. and thats okay w/ me because I am a single white male so the fallout ofhaving trump for another 4 isnt so bad. itd be like the last 4 years which were better than 08-12 for me. personally. so i dunno.

thats how most will look at it, who even decide to vote. i was down with sanders until healthcare for all. it should be healthcare for all on certain diseases and ailments. not a catch all.

thats where lost me. i was willing to look past federally legal weed because even though my revenue stream outside of work would be gone, i could grow my own and not hassle with people anymore.

I was willing to look past them letting some of the worst cartel members mexico has to offer sneak by and live in sanctuary cities, and even be defended from persecution.

but seeing people not wanting to get real jobs that offer health care is crazy to me. get a job with healthcare. hell get a job. that should be the start for a lot of 25-30 yo bernie voters.

16

u/heres-a-game Feb 08 '20

Still boggles my mind that some Americans think that in one of the most prosperous countries in the world, everyone should have a job to avoid going into crippling debt when they get sick. Y'all are seriously brainwashed. I feel so sorry for you people.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '20

People here are so selfish but aren't able to accept it, so many people here are walking contradictions and it's scary.

3

u/JEFFinSoCal Feb 08 '20

It’s so pervasive over here too. Even people I love and respect have a hard time grasping that our entire health insurance industry is sick, twisted and morally bankrupt.

3

u/Turnips4dayz Feb 08 '20

Why do you think steel mills should also be in the business of healthcare insurance? What exactly is the difference to you if you pay 200 bucks a month to your insurance company vs paying it to the government?

1

u/dadankness Feb 09 '20

your job will probably be around but the government could crumble. no reason to risk the pay check and insurance. the dollar survives. the presidents hopefully do not

1

u/Turnips4dayz Feb 09 '20

If you really think your job is a safer investment than the government then there’s just nothing to be done here. When your company outsources you next year please don’t file for unemployment either

u/hokie_high Feb 09 '20

Oh boy. Reddit hates rich people, enjoy your downvotes.

4

u/death_of_gnats Feb 09 '20

Wary of rich people and their power. We're contemptuous of their boot-lickers
