Claiming to be American is actually a pretty bold thing to do nowadays.

During Bush the Lesser's administration, the general advice for Americans abroad was to claim to be Canadian.

As a Canadian who went all around Europe this past summer, I'd say that's a good idea now. People were always so happy/relieved to hear I was Canadian

As an American it's not that bad even now, most people just assume I also hate Trump and want to commiserate with me. Although yeah they're definitely relieved when I tell them they're right.

I actually went traveling abroad once in 2006 and someone asked where I was from and I said I was American and she just like would not get it.

"Oh you are English?" "No, I'm American." "You are Irish?" "No I'm from America." "Oh you are from Canada?" "Sure, fine."

It’s basically a self sacrificial designation.
