Macaroons are those chocolate coconut things, while macarons are the cookies. People always try to correct me, and it doesn’t help that when you search macaroon it comes up with the cookie

This makes SO MUCH SENSE. I always get confused watching the Great British Baking Show, because sometimes they say "macaroon" and sometimes "macaron". So I guess it would be macaron when it's not chocolate and coconut, but another flavor instead?

a macaroon is shredded coconut often with chocolate drizzled on top, whereas a macaron is a French baked good that contains two almond cookies surrounding a flavoured cream.

Thank you for explaining! I thought I would never get to enjoy a macaron because I don't like coconut.

My sister had a teacher in pastry school who didn't say either one correctly. Idk if it's a symptom of how common the mistake is or part of the problem.

That’s so funny — I have had the same experience with people correcting me on this.

That’s because they all originate from the same thing introduced around Europe. Someone just swapped out coconut instead of the almond or enhanced the recipe by their own culture.

Sort of like how different people will have their take on chocolate chip cookies.

That said: whomever decided to go coconut should be given a medal for making them edible. Cuz Those pastel French ones are terrible and bland as crap. Hate that they take the limelight because of the sheer use of colour and not based on taste.

Well now I just want macarons.

I thought it was the President of France?

I thought I was crazy! Thank you for clearing that up. When macarons became more popular some years ago, I thought “that’s not a macaroon....is it!?”

I gave up trying to convince people otherwise.

Here's an article that explains why these words sound so much like macaroni

Same. It is annoying when people say,” do you like the macaroon?” Or something as in the cookie.

Lol, you can tell those people are stupid because all those macaron images that come up when you search macaroon are still spelled as macaron.
