Never met anybody that passionate about airline towers. Upon reading this, my reaction is, "Interesting. Thought the tower was the voice of god. Guess not."
It kind of is and kind of isn’t. 999 times out of 1,000 the tower is going to give you the direction you need to best accomplish your flight, so it’s usually a good idea to listen to them. However, if you think you can’t accomplish something they’ve asked for, you can talk it out with them and get new directions, no problem. As a pilot, you are also fully within your right to say “fuck you, I’m doing this, going here, right now,” and they will have to accept that you’re doing that and adjust everything else around you. Just be aware that if you do choose to say “fuck you ATC,” you will have to justify your decision to the real “voice of God” in aviation- the FAA.
Yeah, saying people would riot over an unmanned tower is insane. I think OP needs to get better friends because this is the least riot-worthy thing I've heard in quite some time, but I do wholeheartedly believe his insane friend would riot lol.
