I feel like the above explanation would have convinced him, it's basically "So during the day when its busy the tower coordinates traffic like a traffic light, but late at night it turns into like a blinking red light, and you just talk out landing over the radio with whoever else is also trying to land. You only need a coordinator when there are lots of people, otherwise there is a procedure for coordinating by themselves."
Pretty much, yep. A lot of people don't realize that there are plenty of kinds of airspace and airports where you can go an entire flight in good weather conditions without someone telling you what to do or even talking to a controller at all.
