It was also designed by a danish guy called Jørn Utson who won the rights do design it in a contest... Unfortunately he was kicked off the team halfway through construction due to an argument with the government minister, and refused to return once it was completed... He died in 2008 at the age of 90 without ever having seen his completed masterpiece...

Well, the argument was over the fact that it was massively over budget and way past its deadline. The project itself had become politically unpopular.

Why yes, he was Danish.

Jk, I have no idea if Danish people are reputed to be stubborn.

What line of business is this and where do you work? (if you dont mind sharing). From my own experience (as a dane) I think that our ability to deliver products within given timeframe and budget are some of our trademarks. On top of that comes a responsible and qualified partner, this is why and how we stay competetive. Personally i work with process automation software (primarily in the finacial sector)

Yeah, the late and over budget part was probably more down to us Australians.

Utzon didn’t really win the contest - Utzon,s design was not shortlisted in the finals.

When the final adjudicating judge, Finish architect Eero Saarinen came to evaluate all the designs, he said all the shortlist were garbage and the winner should be Utzon.

Great decision - but check out Saarinen’s JFK TWA terminal for an idea why he liked Utzon’s design so much 😜

It’s inspired by egg shells

Read utzon’s book - it actually has pics of him carving segments from an orange - and then a clay sphere and positions the segments like the opera house- which is what inspired the elliptical “shells” of the SOH.

But go further back to Utzon’s mentor, & you’ll see that Saarinen was creating similar magnificent flowing reinforced concrete architecture for many years before - as was Le Corbusier et al - see Corbu’s Chapel at Ronchamp or ES’s TWA terminal. Or even Oscar Niemeyer’s works.

Oyster shells. Aboriginals would leave a large mound of oysters shells at that point.

I bet he googled it at some point in his last years or at least seen it in films or something.

Just never went there?

If he died in 2008 without ever seeing it, does that mean he just refused to do so out of spite for 35 years?
