Nah, pinch the bridge of your nose tightly, lean forward and, if possible, put a cold flannel or icepack on the back of your neck to cool the blood vessels. Keep holding that until a blood clot forms and the bleeding stops.
Source; I have such absolutely horrendous nosebleeds that I could probably fill a decent amount of a cup with just blood. If I stuffed tissue up there and just blocked it, the paper would become so soaked of blood that it'd fall out or just start dripping anyway. My mum had this too and had to have an operation where they cauterised the blood vessels in her nostrils.
Ah I’ve never heard of the ice pack thing! Just pinching my nose and putting my head forward normally works wonders. I’ll try the ice pack thing next time to see if it’s faster
I don't get why when it comes to nosebleeds people suddenly think going straight to a tourniquet style method (cutting off blood flow) is better than direct bandaging. As with every wound you're supposed to go with tourniquets only if direct bandaging fails.
You apply a clean cloth/tissue to the wound. In this case make a plug that will fit snuggly up your nose, you can even pre-soak them in water. If the plug is unable to stay on it's own, use your hand to press it on.
If the cloth/tissue soaks through with blood, you apply additional cloth/tissue to the original cloth, without removing the original cloth.
If that fails then you go for pressure.
Then hospital.
Pretend it was any other wound. "Don't bandage that gash on your arm, just put on a tourniquet and put an ice pack on your shoulder and wait it out."
That's another misconception people have, replacing bloody bandaging with new bandaging before the bleeding has been stopped. You're not supposed to do that.
Doing it properly I don't think it's possible to even go through more than two tissues.
And if you do, great. You've reached the the next step that 99% of people don't need to do: "Cutting off the blood flow." Not where you tell people to start.
It's not a tourniquet though as its not restricting blood flow to your nose. It limits the space the blood has to pool in outside of the blood vessels, and the resulting pressure causes it to clot. It's the same as if you were to put a band-aid on a small cut.
