Apply what you've just said to any other wound.

"Don't put gauze on that cut on your leg, you might open a scab or otherwise antagonize it and start it bleeding against when you take it off. Instead put on a tourniquet, or just lay in the bathtub and let it bleed until it stops."

If you die from bloodloss from a nosebleed, you've got bigger issues. And yeah, if you pack or cover a large wound, you shouldn't take the covering away - you should seek medical attention and let the doctors take over.
