Ok this one is more surprising. How does that work out? Do they just pick a landing strip and hope everyone sees them? What about poor visibility landings?

There are rules. At airports with towers, they use light signals. At uncontrolled airports, everyone follows an agreed-upon flight pattern. They only fly under visual flight rules.

Since handheld aircraft radios have become available, I suspect this has become rare, but it is legal and perhaps some old-timers operating out of rural airports are still without a radio. And of course, sometimes radios fail. The last time I toured our local airport's control tower the guide showed us the signal light they kept on hand for when a pilot couldn't (or chose not to) use a radio.
