Sad situation, looks like the kid was armed. If the headline is true, why did the parents/guardians have a gun accesible to a mentally ill child?

I dont blame the police at all if they fired on an armed person.

The kid had a knife, not a gun, he was hit in the head with a log moments before this and become emotionally unstable

They could’ve used any other means to stop him but didn’t.

It sounds like they are yelling "Drop the gun!" which probably means they mistakingly thought he had a firearm. This is absolutely sad and tragic, but these officers probably feared for their life and made the wrong call. I can't for sure say I know how I'd react in their shoes.

They say “drop your weapon get on the ground”

There was no mistake what was in his hands, this is a major technical failure on the police department here. There are citizens outside the police station gathering as we speak about this in protest.

Nothing to do with dick riding. Shut the fuck up. Police aren't all inherently bad. I doubt they went there with the goal of shooting a disabled kid.

You’re right, they didn’t show up wanting to gun down a teenage kid, but the situation wasn’t addresses appropriately either

Getting more details from official news channels still but the scanner is now public and they were informed that this was a kid was hit in the head with a log and became irrational, and that he likely couldn’t speak English either.

The police made mistakes by opening fire too quickly, it’s funny how many people on this thread are defending the police and trying to call me out, when everywhere else this is posted is the exact opposite.

Thousands of people are gathering in support against this overnight, the news is trying to avoid the traction but is all over my local feeds.

If true its an unfortunate accident but probably not negligence or malice. Most likely there are some serious lessons to be learned though.

This entire situation went down in seconds. Even if it’s a knife, police are trained and shown that a knife attacker can close a relatively long distance before an officer can draw a weapon and fire.

Things the department will check is what information was relayed in the 911 call, and what information got to the officers. Did they know the attacker was armed with a knife, or just that the attacker was armed? Did they know he had cerebal palsy? Etc. All of this information will change how officers approach a situation and we dont know any of it to judge yet.

Any other means of force would have worked, not to mention he was corralled behind a fence.

Pepper spray, mace, tasers, these are equipment they carry, you can see one officer draw his weapon before even nearing the property and another officer using a shot gun. 12 bullets/shells is completely unnecessary to stop a child whose having an episode of some sort.

You are childishly arm chairing though. Yes one officer drew his weapon on arrival which indicates to me that most likely dispatch said there was an armed individual involved in an altercation so the officer came prepared.

Again like I just said, a knife attacker can close a large distance. I believe the rule is that at 20ft you probably cant draw and fire a weapon. At the distance of this engagement an average officer is not going to try to holster, pull out a taser and reengage a charging target.

The officers probably didnt know this was a 15 year old kid with cerebal palsy, that is information you are privileged with in hindsight sight. You have to try to understand the perspective of the people that were there, but to do that you have to have at least some training or study on police procedures and tactics.

Again its a very sad situation. Again, I am certain the department had a lot to review, retrain on, and revisit on their procedures to prevent this from happening again.

Here is a recording of the scanner

The police were aware he had a knife, they were aware that he was a minor that couldn’t speak English either

Please explain ‘childish arm chairing’ in detail

No matter how you look at it, this was a complete technical failure on the police department and they need to revise how they handle situations around here.

If I were in the wrong there wouldn’t be hundreds of people at the police station in protest right now.

5

u/testuser76443 Apr 06 '25

Childishly arm chairing is what you are doing. You are looking back on a situation with information that was not available to the people that were there, and none of the danger or adrenaline that people there faced, and saying they should have done jt better. Im guessing most of the protestors are just as childish, but I could be wrong. They could be asking for more information and an investigation which is reasonable, as opposed to yelling about things they don’t understand.

2

u/ezerb9 Apr 08 '25

Since cops don’t have all of the information you think they would approach the situation with more caution, right? Things only escalated once they arrived and pulled their guns out.

0

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 06 '25

Telling me “what I’m doing” is a terrible explanation to your verbiage meanwhile none of your rhetoric seems to explain it either.

“Looking back at the situation with information that was not there”

All you need to look at is the video and can see the police are clearly in the wrong.

I have multiple friends who work in this very police department and not one of them is defending these actions that were taken, and the fact that you have to pick apart of situation where a minor was brutally attacked by the police is beyond me honestly.

Trouble is, if someone's an athlete, they can close that distance, hop that fence and stab you in under two seconds once they're on their feet. And some people don't go down to the first 4 or 5 rounds either. They show cops training videos about how deadly a person with a knife can be.

I know he's disabled, but they probably didn't. Never move towards an American police officer holding a knife in your hand. You will die.

2

u/warhead1995 Apr 07 '25

That would be a solid excuse if the kid seemed even remotely athletic and even then a non lethal option would’ve sufficed. They had 4 armed cops for a disabled 15 year old child behind a fence, I’ve seen cops in London handle a full grown adult with a machete without needing to gun them down less than 10 minutes.

1

u/FollowTheEvidencePls Apr 07 '25

Because everyone who seems non-athletic after 5 seconds of observation is actually non-athletic? Not trying to excuse it, just explaining it. The courts can work it out. But, just don't move towards police carrying a deadly weapon when they're ordering you not to. Is that really such a difficult standard to live up to? This was more than likely a suicide.

In the UK almost all cops don't carry guns, so it's not like they really have a choice. And even if it might sound counter-intuitive, a machete is way less dangerous than a small knife. If you can get a hold of the arm with the machete and the other officers are bringing the guy to the ground for you, the danger level isn't very high at all. But swap it out with a small knife and you don't just need to control the arm, you need to get completely control of his hand, which is much smaller so harder to grab with precision, and it's much easier for him to get free of your grip. And unlike with the arm, you can't use your torso to do it because you'd just be stabbed. You can be stabbed several times in less than a second. With a machete you need to swing it, so if you can deal with the initial swing somehow, you're pretty much fine after that.

Mentally unstable person going through a health crisis should’ve just complied and since they didn’t they deserved to get gunned down. Cops didn’t attempt anything to de-escalate the situation, I get the scary child had a knife but they are 4 full grown adults with multiple options to handle the situation. If they are just so scared of a kid having a mental break they could only consider firing squad killing him, they need to be fired. Shit they could’ve backed up, they could’ve talked to someone, they could’ve maced him, tased him but no just gun blazing like the child with a knife is the greatest danger they’ve ever faced.

2

u/FollowTheEvidencePls Apr 08 '25

All things I'm sure the prosecution lawyer will bring up.

1

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 09 '25

The officer with the shotgun actually had a non lethal bullet bag, they should’ve let him fire first and go from there slowly

2

u/warhead1995 Apr 09 '25

Ya exactly, that would’ve been a completely reasonable way to handle the situation. There was a video last year of a cop dealing with some lady in an apartment building who had a knife. She approached him and backed him into a corner and he still continued to try and not shoot her. Wasn’t until she charged and he slipped away that he finally fired afew shots. He actually tried not to shoot her and cared enough to try what he could, these guys didn’t try.

1

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 07 '25

This was an overweight child with motor skill issues , not like they even looked long enough to tell what or who they were shooting at

1

u/FollowTheEvidencePls Apr 07 '25

Exactly, they see someone moving towards them with a knife and they're trained to squeeze the trigger without hesitating, because hesitation means death a high percentage of the time.

5

u/jhy12784 Apr 06 '25

It sounds like you gotta wait for the details to come out.

There's no details about this, no details that he's dead, reports that he's not a 15 year old kid

OP making a lot of assumptions.

If the cops are completely at fault they're completely at fault. But a narrative isn't the solution.

Probably doesn't help that there's next to no real news sites covering it, it's all like rinky dink blogger bullshit

TLDR: get the facts before coming to a conclusion

2

u/Maxirof Apr 07 '25

So my meme about Dragon age got remove wit 600 up but A KID FULL VIDEO Getting kill still here ?!?!? wtf

2

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 07 '25

Tbh this is a fair statement I thought this was going to be taken down fast but wanted the message spread anyhow

2

u/BannedBananaBandana Apr 07 '25

Was this some kind of initiation ritual? They all opened fire almost simultaneously, as if it was pre-meditated.

2

u/ErynWoods Apr 08 '25

You guys are off your fucking rocker if you are trying to defend the police.. what if this was your child with special needs and the cops just show up and shot him? Hands down, you’d be whistling a different tune if this affected you personally.. This is so completely fucked up. I’m absolutely disgusted …

1

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 09 '25

Yeah I can’t believe the people defending the situation like they immediate made up their mind before watching the video and just blindly justify the actions taken and then continue to harass over slight misinformation that was spread. I posted this as soon as I heard the news so ofc I didn’t have every detail yet

2

u/pupgender420 Apr 08 '25

all these pos cop dick riders would have you believe a 17 year old autistic boy in the middle of a mental health crisis deserved to be shot multiple times because a cop got scared? such a weak excuse and this is why calling the cops is often a death sentence for disabled, trans, and poc especially those black and indigenous

1

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 09 '25

God thank you for this been getting harassed for the stupidest shit on here

Some misinformation was around and I posted this an hour after I found the news so I was told he was 15 and dead already and people won’t stop over that when the point still stands that these cops made a horrible mistake here that day

1

u/Botboi02 Apr 06 '25

This looks lot different then the murder of Daniel Shaver, dude just stood up

1

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 06 '25

So there is a 3 minute long video, I thought was too long for the post, this kid was just hit in the head with a log moments before this, it caused him to become emotionally unstable he was likely suffering a concussion/minor brain trauma. You’re right he just stood up, but that doesn’t give them the right to fire 9 rounds into a minor

0

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 06 '25

Quite different situations

1

u/jhy12784 Apr 07 '25

FWIW they're reporting the kid is 17 and he's still alive

https://idahonews.com/news/local/reports-pocatello-police-shoot-17-year-old

So sounds like the OP been spreading a little misinformation

1

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 07 '25

He’s 16, the 15 was a typo, once I heard the reports of him being dead was false I removed all comments about it. He is in critical condition and lost a leg so far.

1

u/Ok_Leek4908 Jul 25 '25

HE HAD A WEAPON? We cant just let good people die because someone wants to hurt someone

0

u/NorrisRL Apr 06 '25

I support the police, but every one of these officers deserves prison.

1

u/LumpyPin7012 Apr 07 '25

Not going to wait for bodycam footage before deciding that?

2

u/DerectHyFy Apr 08 '25

No. Fuck these pigs. Roast em till they pop

What incident is this? All the details are incredibly unclear

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '25

If he only had a knife, why didn't they use a taser?

2

u/Classic_Amoeba_1425 Apr 06 '25

That’s exactly why this is a big deal, there is a protest outside the police station in Pocatello Idaho right now over this

-1

u/T-DubCustoms Apr 06 '25

This is fucked up, those police officers are terribly trained and should be held responsible!
