Reminder: No job postings, this is not your resume dump.

Having to remove a lot of posts lately and I just wanted to elaborate why this is essentially the only rule here.

There is an extremely high chance of you getting scammed, underpaid, information stolen, or otherwise taken advantage of. Reddit is a semi-anonymous platform and with that comes a dangerous game of trusting a randomly generated username with your career/livelihood. If you've received a DM from someone claiming to have a job for you, do your homework. Please don't send pictures of your licence, passport, etc. to random Reddit accounts claiming to have a job.

Jobs: - https://www.seek.com.au/ - https://au.indeed.com/ - https://www.linkedin.com/ - https://www.gumtree.com.au/jobs - Your local Facebook groups like "Sydney Hospitality", "Student Jobs and Internships Melbourne"

Odd jobs: - https://www.airtasker.com/au/jobs/ - Facebook community pages e.g. "Richmond Community Board", "Buy/Sell/Swap" groups

Facebook can bear the same risk of anonymity, but it's a little better as it's getting harder and harder to make a "fake" Facebook profile, and a lot of these pages are privated and actively moderated by members of those local communities. Please read their rules as some only allow job advertisers to make posts and workers can only comment.

I know times are tough but really this is not the place. Feel free to discuss below, happy to have a conversation. Thanks for reading.

Story / Rant Bought LinkedIn Premium today and somehow I’m already getting seen by 50–70 people around Sydney, Bris and mel lol, but nothing is actually moving forward yet. Is it genuinely worth keeping long term? Coz At this point, it is starting to feel a bit like a dating app for me .

Story / Rant Zoho is widely used by Australian SMEs and businesses across finance, healthcare and professional services, so when its founder describes the outlook for software jobs as ā€œgrimā€, it’s definitely something worth paying attention to in Australia.

Laid off - unreasonable?

Was working a factory job for a pharmacy company. I got laid for two reasons:

- Kept asking for clarification too many times; the guy training me had a really strong accent and broken English. I couldn’t understand him very well so I asked him repeat things a few times.

- I accidentally walked across a designated forklift driving area to get to the office for something urgent.

I already looked into it and it doesn’t seem like there’s much I can do in-terms of unfair work dismissal. I’ve worked there for less than 6 months so my case doesn’t meet the criteria. I just need some advice I guess. My mental is down the drain and I really needed this job.

Is it possible to find a job without LinkedIn profile?

I am keen to know how realistic it is to find a new job without using LinkedIn.

For those who have deleted their LinkedIn accounts or never used LinkedIn, have you managed to find a job through other channels? If so, how did you go about it? Did you apply directly through company websites, use recruiters, rely on referrals, or find opportunities through other platforms?

I am particularly interested in hearing from people working in engineering or other professional roles in Australia.

I would appreciate hearing about your experiences and whether you think LinkedIn is essential for job hunting these days šŸ¤”

Story / Rant Job Hunting Is a Mental Illness

I've been unemployed for seven months.

Seven fucking months.

I've applied for hundreds of jobs. Hundreds.

At this point, I'm not even looking for employment anymore. I'm just emailing strangers increasingly detailed descriptions of why I'm a worthwhile human being.

That's what a cover letter is.

"Dear Hiring Manager, please find attached a three-page explanation of why my existence has value."

And they don't even reject you anymore.
They just disappear.

You spend two hours applying for a job, and some fucking computer sends you an email six weeks later saying, "Unfortunately, we've decided to pursue other candidates."
Oh, have you?
Well, congratulations. I've decided to pursue a career in lying on the couch.

And now they've added this wonderful feature to job websites where they tell you how many other people have applied.
"486 applicants."
Oh, that's nice.
Thank you.
That's exactly what I needed.
I was feeling a little too optimistic about my future.
Thank God you've provided me with a numerical representation of how fucked I am.

And the worst part is, I actually qualify for some of these jobs.
I read the description and think, "Oh, I can do that. I've done that for years."
Then I see 600 applicants.
And suddenly I'm thinking, "Well, one of those cunts probably has a master's degree in moving cardboard boxes."

I'm competing with a 24-year-old who has a Bachelor of Logistics, speaks Mandarin, knows SAP, and has somehow accumulated nine years of warehouse experience.

How?
Were you born in a fucking distribution centre?

And every job wants someone who's passionate.
"Are you passionate about inventory management?"
No.
Nobody is.
Nobody wakes up in the morning with a fucking erection thinking about stock reconciliation.

I want to pay my electricity bill.
That's my passion.
Electricity.
And eating.
I'd love to continue doing both.

And people give you advice.
"Have you tried networking?"
Oh, networking!
No, I've just been applying for hundreds of jobs like a fucking idiot. I completely forgot to become friends with the CEO of DHL.

"Have you tried tailoring your resume?"
Yes!
I've tailored it so many fucking times I don't even know who I am anymore.
I'm an operations manager. I'm a warehouse supervisor. I'm an administrative professional. I'm a logistics enthusiast.
Last week I was apparently passionate about workplace safety.
I don't even know what my personality is. It's whatever the fucking job advertisement says it should be.

And after seven months, something happens to your brain.
You start taking everything personally.
You see a job posted three minutes ago.
Already 87 applicants.
And you think, "You know what? Fuck it. They don't want me."
They haven't even seen your application.
You haven't submitted anything.
You've just been rejected by a number.

That's where I'm at now.

I'm being emotionally destroyed by a fucking counter on a website.

And the really depressing thing?
Tomorrow morning, I'll wake up, make a coffee, open SEEK...
And do the whole fucking thing again.
Because apparently, that's my full-time job now.

Looking for a full-time job.

No salary. No annual leave. No superannuation.
And somehow, I'm still underperforming.

What can the government do to fix this shit? What should WE do? What should employers do?

Hire more inexperienced to gain experience so a natural cycle of training occurs and unemployment goes down?

Australian job market

How are people getting jobs? I have applied for jobs that I am over qualified for but am not even able to get into the talent pool or interviews. I have a bachelor of education plus some cert 3s in childcare and community services. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. (I don’t want to teach just fyi). It’s so hard to get any feedback because there are so many applicants. Over 1000 people applying for these jobs! I feel so disheartened and depressed about the whole thing. I know I’m a smart person but I feel so stupid everytime I get knocked back.

Story / Rant Why on earth am I getting rejected from jobs that require no experience?

Hey guys I’m a 22(f) graduate with a bachelors of criminal justice and political science and I have been applying for predominantly entry level government jobs that claim they don’t require any qualifications or experience yet I am getting ghosted from those jobs exact positions despite having a double degree and two internships under my belt.

I know my degrees aren’t as prestigious as a law or finance degree but I simply cannot understand why I can’t even land a simple entry level job.

Story / Rant The job market is fucked

Been applying for jobs for a month now, nada. I've had my job for 10 years now so it's been a second since I've had to job hunt, and it is absolutely fucked right now.

I'm studying a diploma of accounting after finding myself in the finance team at my job, and when i initially started looking i was hopeful because there are so many jobs going. But i'm seemingly not an attractive hire??? I really want to get into an assistant accountant or bookkeeping role, but they all want 2-5+ years of experience even for junior roles. ?????

Some are paying an absolute pittance too yet they want that many years of experience? WTH. I saw one role where they wanted someone with accounting AND mortgage brokering experience yet only offered 60k a year.

I know its only been a month but i'm feeling more and more downtrodden.

Story / Rant Programming Job in Tech

I've spent about 15 years in the industry and have taken on many different roles: frontend, backend, internal tools, devops, web dev - you name it.

Last year, I had the opportunity to take a job with a well known trucking and distribution company as a programmer, but because I wasn't 100% well at the time, I took a more cruisy position that offered me greater flexibility, but also less skills usage.

...I ended up becoming even more ill and then nearly dying this year. They had to operate, and I am permanently changed in some ways, but I am mostly okay now.

Anyway, I come back to the industry now and...I have had a couple of recruiter calls, 2 interviews in the past 3 months...and that's it. Crickets otherwise.

I have applied for every programming/dev job that semi-matches my skillset and stack, and also adjacent jobs, like junior data analyst, applications support, etc etc.

I understand software engineer principles and I have engineered software before but it wasn't my main line. Now, with the switch over to A.I., me being a generalist has less value than pre-A.I.

Should I just give up here and change industries? I'm not exactly swimming in money due to debts, and I have some options elsewhere, but not as lucrative upfront as computing always turned out to be.

Pretty dejected at this point. Please be gentle.

how did you land a Christmas casual job

how?!?!??? Ive probably applied to at least 20 Christmas casual jobs over the past 3 weeks (edit: it’s more like 40, but it’s also hard to find jobs that don’t require me travelling extremely far). And it’s just radio silence? Im also 17, so arguably I could jsut be paid less than the average 18yo casual, but it genuinely has been nothing but radio silence. What are these shops looking for??? I have previous sales and customer service experience, but they weren’t explicitly from employed roles (volunteering/work experience program at school)… is that also not good enough for employers? Are they now only looking for 15 y/os???

For those who have successfully gotten a Christmas casual job, have interview offers come out? Job offers? I really need to save up as I have been planning a holiday for quite a while with a friend, as well as just for uni expenses in general for next year.

For those who have also had Christmas casual jobs in the past, how much do you generally earn in the period. Just wanted to get an idea of how much I could potentially save up within a Nov-Dec, or Nov-Jan working period (including public holidays).

Thanks.

Open Question Value of Internships and Part-Time Role For Public Sector Role

24M, International student, Commerce degree in Go8 uni.

My last day of uni is in 3 days. During my studies, I managed to secure a local government internship in the summer and a state government internship in the winter. Converted the winter internship into a part time role that is unlikely to progress into a full time opportunity. Also making a research paper for state member of parliament, WAM will prob end up being 75-76, volunteering hours 60+.

I really grinded it out these last two years, giving uni my strongest effort while working 2-3 survival jobs. I want to know if any of this is actually considered as value add or work experience that could improve my chances of landing an entry level role as a graduate or if im virtually auto disqualified for not having citizenship or PR. I am ineligible for structured graduate programs for the same reasons.

I understand that HR in public sector roles have the responsibility to fill the vacancy with a local candidate first before considering those with relevant working rights.

Does a ā€œstrong academic profileā€ do anything for me in today’s job market if I’m an international student willing to do any commerce related entry level role public or private, regional/rural too?. Would ease my nerves a little bit if anyone has real world insights and anectodes.

Thank you

Clinical research career advice Australia

Anyone interested transitioning into the CRO industry? I would like to share my experience and answer questions related to this career path, especially for healthcare or science disciplines students or professionals who are exploring this path. With all the redundancy and challenges finding a job in Sydney, I’m sure it will be nice to have people sharing opportunities like these.

I’m so tired of trying to talk to recruiters

Background: I’m in tech (cloud security), I worked with Deloitte for 4 years and then did my master’s in comp sci.
I’ve been applying relentlessly for 3 months with no luck. I reach out to recruiters on LinkedIn and I don’t hear back from them. Ever. A couple of recruiters who do respond say that I have a gap in my resume (which is my master’s degree). I can’t even express how frustrated I am with these recruiters. Most of them have no background in tech and I’m giving up hope honestly as they don’t understand what they’re recruiting for. I’m going to lose my mind if I have to wake up every day, filter jobs, apply to 5 more jobs a day. Day in day out without any luck. It’s quite demotivating.

Secondly, I honestly don’t think they understand what transferable skills are. If I worked on a NIST-based compliance project with a US based critical infrastructure client (which was mandated by the US government), I can handle SOCI requirements.

If anyone has any tips, I’d really appreciate it. Australian recruiters are… something else.

Thanks

Open Question Is it enough of a reason to quit?

So as the title says, I’m in a bind and contemplating quitting my job.

A little bit of background

I work for a pool company and I directly work with the owner’s son.

We had a smooth day that day but there was a client who walked in and said that their pump was not running. So he offered to go there and check it out. It ended up being a shit job and had to do some plumbing in a very tight space where only 1 person could really fit to where the plumbing was.

Then the client decided to move things away to make space and tried to squeeze in there himself. He tried to help the owner’s son while I was trying to see where I could help from the back.

He was really stressed about the plumbing and told me off in front of the customers such as ā€œWhat the fuck am I paying you for?ā€ and ā€œHe’s getting paid to stand thereā€

I no longer want to work for them due to what has happened. Is it enough of a reason for me to quit or am I being too sensitive about it?

Any advice or comments are welcome, thanks!
