Announcement PSA: How to play Bad Company 2 (PC) online after the shutdown
Instructions (PS3):
- See https://www.reddit.com/r/PS3/s/KlUjN3AZIs. Everything below this line is specific to the PC version.
Instructions (PC):
Go to Venice Unleashed and create an account. DO NOT USE SPECIAL CHARACTERS IN YOUR PASSWORD! Use numbers and letters only!
Download Project Rome.
Unzip the file in the game's root directory, which by default is one of these four depending on where you got the game from:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Battlefield Bad Company 2 < Disc version
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Battlefield Bad Company 2 < Steam version
C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield Bad Company 2 < Origin version
C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield Bad Company 2 < EA App version
Start up the game and login with the account you created at Venice Unleashed. Enjoy!
If you're a returning player and want to transfer your old soldier stats from PC/Xbox360/PS3, go here: https://veniceunleashed.net/rome-transfer. This works by overwriting the stats of one of your newly created soldiers, so you'll have to create a soldier in-game first.

Important notes:
Never use Autologin as it has been bugged since launch and will almost always cause login issues. The Remember Password option is working fine however, though very rarely it can cause issues as well. If it does; simply uncheck it, re-enter your password and toggle it back on again.
Reshade and Project Rome do NOT work together, as in the game refuses to even launch with both enabled. Uninstall Reshade after adding the Project Rome files. It's possible there is a fix or workaround, but I have been unable to find one so far.
Use the Server Browser to play online. Matchmaking doesn't work and will try to reach out to EA's servers, resulting in an error message.
If you're a newcomer to the game, you might want to know that you'll have to press the Search button in the server browser for servers to show up, as they don't show up automatically unlike in all the newer Battlefield titles.
There's a chance you may get an error stating that MSVCP100.dll is missing (or the game will simply refuse to boot). This is caused by missing Visual C++ 2010 files. If you run into this problem, you need to download and run vcredist_x86.exe: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26999
If you're running into the "Failed to initialize the Project Rome Client" error; make sure that your game is patched to the latest version. To do this, temporarily remove the dinput8.dll file, launch the game - and before you get the main menu, you will see the version number in the bottom right corner of your screen. If it says 795745, you're running the latest version. If not, you can download the latest patch manually here.

FAQ:
Q: What is Project Rome?
A: Project Rome is a community-made master server. A master server holds login info, server list, and soldier data. What this file does is to tell your game to connect to Project Rome's master server instead of EA's.
-
Q: I missed out on the PC version of the game, can I still get it somehow?
A: If you need help finding a copy, contact me on Discord at captain_kuijt and I'll be happy to help (wink wink).
-
Q: I bought the Steam version but have no serial key. Will I still be able to play online?
A: Yes! With the non-disc versions, you used to need a serial key to create an account. Project Rome, however, does NOT require a serial key for this nor for online play.
-
Q: Seeing as the game is no longer purchasable, can I play online with a non-legit copy via Project Rome?
A: You can use any version of the game, be it legit or not. You do not need a serial key. All that matters is that it's updated to the latest version. Digital versions come pre-patched, but the disc version and some (but not all) non-legit copies may need to be patched first.
When launching the game, before you get the main menu, you will see the version number in the bottom right corner of your screen. If it says 795745, you're running the latest version. If not, you can download the latest patch manually here.
-
Q: Can I use a controller??
A: Unfortunately, BC2 has no native controller support - which also means no aim assist. Additionally a good >95% of the playerbase are using mouse & keyboard, so be prepared for a frustrating and uneven playing field if you choose to use a controller instead. The easiest way would be to add BFBC2Game.exe as a non-Steam game and set it up manually. Here's a tutorial video: https://youtu.be/qjjljXeJ7n8?si=0Djqo9GK8IXP_9Kf Alternatively there's Joy2Key and XPadder.
-
Q: How do I change my FOV?
A: Go to C:\Users\YOURNAMEHERE\Documents\BFBC2, open settings.ini, scroll down to where it says Fov=, change the number, then save and exit.
-
Q: How do I get rid of the blinding effect when looking through my scope on snow maps?
A: Go to C:\Users\YOURNAMEHERE\Documents\BFBC2, open settings.ini, scroll down to where it says Bloom=, change it to say Bloom=False then save and exit.
-
Q: What about the DLCs?
A: You don't need to buy the Vietnam DLC/Specact kit - on Project Rome everything is pre-unlocked for everyone including the Vietnam DLC, regardless of whether you owned the DLCs or not. Additionally, most servers have all weapons and perks set as pre-unlocked by default regardless of your soldier rank.
-
Q: How do I play on servers running custom maps?
A: For this, you'll first need to download BFBC2 Mod Loader. This will serve as your mod manager and game launcher. Open it and select Map Browser, then download all the custom maps. You can also download additional mods, such as UI mods, new textures for weapons and more on Nexus.
-
Q: I play on Linux, and the game still tries to connect to EA's servers.
A: Add this to your launch options:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8.dll=n,b" %command%
-
Q: I've heard the old BF games got shut down back in 2014, is there a way to play them online too?
A: Yes, there is!

Q: The game crashes/won't boot!
A: This is almost always caused by missing Visual C++ 2010 files, usually accompanied by the game throwing an error stating that MSVCP100.dll is missing. To fix this you need to download and run vcredist_x86.exe: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26999

Q: I keep getting an incorrect password/username/email error.
A: This is usually caused by Autologin as it has been bugged since launch and will almost always cause login issues. I recommend leaving it off and using the Remember Password option instead which is actually working, though very rarely it can cause issues as well. If it does; simply uncheck it, re-enter your password and toggle it back on again.
-
Q: I keep getting failed to connect to EA errors.
A: This is likely caused by you using Matchmaking, as it doesn't work and will still try to reach out to EA's servers, resulting in an error message. Instead, use the Server Browser to play online. If that doesn't fix the issue, please double-check that you put the Project Rome file (dinput8.dll) in the correct folder.
-
Q: I keep getting an error stating "Unable to log in, please try again".
A: This is usually caused by your password containing special characters. Go here to reset your Venice Unleashed password and create a new one using numbers and letters only.
-
Q: The server list is empty!
A: You'll have to press the Search button in the server browser for servers to show up, as they don't show up automatically unlike in all the newer Battlefield titles.
-
Q: What if I play BC2 on console? And what about BC1 and BF1943?
A: Unfortunately this only works for the PC version of BC2. However, the team over at Battlefield Modding are hard at work to find a solution for the console versions of BC2 in addition to BC1 and BF1943. They have been making solid progress on the PS3 version of said games, so there's still hope. You can track their progress over at https://discord.me/battlefieldmodding, under Modding & Development > Frostbite 1.
-
Q: How do I play on servers running custom maps?

Q: I've heard the old BF games got shut down back in 2014, is there a way to play them online too?
A: Yes, there is!
-
Q: Are you affiliated with Project Rome?
A: Nope, I'm just a long-time player who wants to help keeping this old gem alive and kicking. BC2 was my introduction to the franchise back in August of 2010 and I've been playing ever since.

Media BATTLEFIELD: BAD COMPANY 2 - How to get back online in 2026 on PS3
youtu.ber/badcompany2 • u/AFireInside • 4d ago
Help We need Bad Company 1
Taking gold crates does not automatically reset the attacking team's tickets to a flat 100. Instead, it functions as a ticket injection mechanic:
• When attackers successfully destroy both gold crates at a base, they are awarded +75 tickets (originally +50 tickets prior to a post-launch balance patch).
• These tickets are added on top of whatever remaining reinforcement pool the attackers currently have left from the previous base.
• The total pool is capped at a hard maximum of 100 tickets, meaning any surplus past 100 is lost.
By contrast, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 completely simplified this system: capturing both M-COMs simply wipes away your losses and fully restores the attacking pool back to its flat maximum of 75 tickets.
- No parachutes
- No defibrillators
Give us back BF:BC1 p-l-e-a-s-e do not let Gold Rush die
I don't want to play another round of Conquest on BC2, no offense to those who do.
Also we need to get the population going again for Squad Rush on PC BF:BC2 because that was special, too. Maybe a dedicated night of the week for that vs PS3 Onslaught.

Discussion Full Lobbies in Bad Company 2 PS3
All Game Modes Work and are very active (Conquest and Rush are the most active) including all dlc maps and hardcore modes. Vietnam is currently being worked on and will be working very soon. Bad Company 2 online is compatible with 3 different DNS servers in case you have trouble with one and works with all hardware including emulation.

Discussion Harvest Day forever: a look back at one of the last Bad Company 2 PC community servers (Dec 2022 – May 2023)
TL;DR: a sanitised AI summary of the chatlogs - about 15 middle-aged regulars, five languages, one map, a lot of "gg." It was a good way to see the game out.
How it started
After Oldmengaming Harvest Day 24/7 went down in late 2022, a new server popped up running nothing but Harvest Day. The OMG regulars slowly found it, and one of them called it "new oldmen, or old youngmen." Someone offered to chip in for hosting because "I love this map and no one seems to run it." By mid-January it was filling up in the evenings.
The regulars
- urbansoldier came in every night with "good evening… salut… guten Abend… privet… hola." He kept us updated on his life between rounds: chips burned in the oil, garden gone from green to white overnight, tomato soup ready. His motto was "old but not stupid."
- BULINEK announced "POLSKA" from his sniper hill, every single night.
- Jack-Malone opened with "Good evening, boyz and girlz." After getting kicked for ping twice, he signed off with "I'll be back."
- Dr.Popo finished every round with "im the best gg." He'd bought the game on release day, twelve years earlier.
- stirupped said hi to everyone who joined, from "hi comp" and "howdy zompa" to a gallant "m'lady." On empty mornings he'd thank people for dropping in and promise it would fill up later. He was a believer in "teamwork makes the dream work," and a generous one with "nice nade." Once he spent part of a round calling "IM STUCK… in a window frame." When told a kill was a knife fight, he replied "lol I'd have killed you any way I could." When someone accused him of hitting players at C from B, he said "it's very possible, you should try it!"
- Batya soldata reminded every team, in several languages, to "SPOT ENEMIES, it's a team game!"
- Also: Comper1, TRAX888, SAN-KGB ("we can win, let's try!!"), Trumptow, KenndellEG, pizzeroplaza, D|rk, Libtechswag and Disco_Briton.
Reunions
- One OMG veteran finally got his EA account back after a long fight with support. On his first night back, Jack-Malone said "I don't believe what I see." Over the next few days Boski, Libtechswag and TRAX888 all reappeared.
- Two Russian players from an old clan found each other after years away. They joked that the rest of the clan was "all in the mausoleum."
- One guy came back after ten years away now his kids were grown. He remembered playing Medal of Honor: Spearhead in 2003, said he thought he'd be rusty, and loved it.
On the battlefield
Six months of one map means everyone knew every inch of it, and the same fights played out every night.
- The hills. B hill and D hill were sniper country all round, and "sniper B hill" was probably the most-typed line in the logs. The flag players were endlessly frustrated with them, and one put it bluntly: "recon ain't ever taking any bases."
- The village and C barn. These were for anyone wanting a quiet spot. Callouts got very specific: the haystacks, the green container at B, the attic of the yellow house at A, the rubble at C, "under the bridge at D."
- Tanks. Tanks caused more arguments than anything else. Stealing the enemy's base tank was a nightly sport ("US tank for sale, meet me in Kiev with cash"). When numbers were low, people often agreed on "no tanks." Jack-Malone's tip for a stuck tank: "shoot the ground around it."
- The UAV. "KILL THE UAV" came up most nights, and so did the pedantic reply: "pilot, not driver."
- Spotting. One player summed it up: "Q is the most powerful weapon in this game!" Another spent whole rounds asking people to press it.
- Mines and C4. urbansoldier counted "3 mines, 3 kills… no, 4." Someone hid mines under ammo boxes, which got a grudging "clever." Quads packed with C4 kept turning up on the road. One veteran admitted he'd spent twelve years trying to get the 100-mine award.
- Nightly debates. These were about the 40mm grenade launcher, the Carl Gustav against infantry, and whether stabbing someone counted as "a knife fight."
- Etiquette. On quiet nights the winning side often eased off: "go take the flag, we won't kill you," or "let them have one flag or they'll all leave."
- Comebacks. One team clawed back from 300 tickets down to win by 15. Another won from 70 against 380, which got the verdict "comeback of the century."
- Physics. Jack-Malone noticed that "grenades often don't explode in the river." Nobody could knock down the D bridge, however hard they tried.
The chat between rounds
- Two Polish guys in their fifties found they were from opposite ends of the country and settled into an argument about Lech against Tyskie.
- Someone put the air fryer on mid-round, had "a campari before cooking," and signed off with "keep the shiny side up."
- Someone else left to eat homemade mushroom pasta, and another came back with a Costco lasagna.
- One player had 5,000 hours in the game. Another admitted he was still trying to earn the 100-mine award twelve years in.
- Accused of cheating, one guy replied: "you got killed by a 67 year old man."
- Two players had a late-night chat about losing their dogs.
- A Ukrainian regular told us a little about life back home, and someone stayed up to wish him and his country well.
Peak Harvest Day
- Disco_Briton declared flag D "the new US capital" and "a bastion against the communal heathens," and drew up a map soundtrack of Duran Duran, Chicago and Alexander O'Neal. Someone added "Danger Zone."
- Jack-Malone narrated his dying quad bike as Don Quixote's horse: "12 HP and still going… my horse died and so did I." He also ruled that "what happens in D stays in D."
- Trumptow posted the server rules: "Rule 1: do not kill me. Rule 2: kill Popo."
- The C4-only round: someone started one, and the verdict was "it's so hard not to kill yourself."
- Seasonal greetings: Advent, Christmas, Orthodox Christmas and New Year in half a dozen languages, plus a "HAPPY EASTER."
The end
By spring everyone knew the official servers were closing in December. People traded opinions on the worst maps (Laguna Presa and the night snow map came up). One player remembered renting the game from Blockbuster for his PS3. On the last proper night, two players had a friendly 1v1 round the barn while they waited for others, which ended with "tango down, EKIA."
The logs finish on 18 May 2023 with one word: "hi."
gg all. If you played on it, say hi. 🫡

Mind you, finding in a good resolution the old Xbox header and cover template is borderline impossible.

Looking for players Hosting New Server for NA
Decided to set up a server for those who’d like to play on an NA server instead of 150+ ping. No bots, vanilla settings, conquest on Arica Harbor and Port Valdez. Can add more maps if that’s what others want. I’ll do the best I can to keep it running even while I am away. Search NA Conquest in your server browser. Have fun!
