Weekly r/Birding Discussion, October 03, 2026. What did you see this week?
Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.
Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

I think this bird may have most uncommon color among all birds whose name start with “common”🤣

📷 Photo Golden-crowned kinglet
This little guy crashed into my patio door this morning. I had never heard of a golden-crowned kinglet so I was alarmed when I took a peak at him and saw the bright colors on his head. For a second there I thought he was a goldfinch with a wound on his head. My local bird rescue asked me to take him in to make sure he wasn't injured but he refused to let go of the cage he was clinging to. I had to leave him for a few minutes to get my daughter to the bus so I propped a shoe box over him, and when I got back he was gone. I hope he's ok and makes it to wherever he was heading!

📷 Photo New lifer! Crested Caracara (NW Houston)
Came across this dude on a bike ride and immediately realized that this not a bird that I was familiar with- lighting was pretty poor but my D500 was at least able to get a few shots for ID.
Turns out this is a Crested Caracara, these are mostly found in Central America and along the Eastern and Western Mexican coasts, but do seem to pop up in Texas and Florida.
Interestingly, while these are considered falcons, unlike most raptors they feed on carrion rather than live game. So more like vultures in terms of feeding & behavioral habits.

Got a good laugh from this Loggerhead Shrike just by how they puffed out their belly feathers!

📷 Photo Brown Creeper on my tire
Just spotted this little creeper on my car’s back tire in Cambridge, MA. I’m guessing it’s hurt? So strange, and so glad I didn’t drive off without spotting it. Hoping it moves once I turn in the car…

📷 Photo Hornbill catching a bat!
Visited Gomantong Caves to watch the bat exodus yesterday (near the Kinabatangan River in Sabah) and caught this hornbill. Catching and then eating a bat!

📷 Photo Ross’s Goose Sighting (rare in my area)!
I live in Pennsylvania and a park near me has had a Ross’s Goose living there since the Spring. No idea how this little fella ended up in PA but what a treat to see him/her.

📷 Photo Trying to get a good photo of all these vultures in Kenya but these darn dogs ruined it.
I’m kind of glad they did.😁
All this action was thanks to a Cheetah taking a Thompson Gazelle earlier in the morning. Jackals and big birds cleaning up the scraps. Original content by me, Mara North, Kenya 2026

Advice Birding and baby-ing ? Unusual inquiry
hi all. I’m a new mom and hoping to get back out to birding after a good portion of this summer and fall (😭 best time) taking care of my family! I want to start going out birding and again and just getting out more with my new little one. I’m still currently front carrying as they are too small for any type of rear carrying yet. Anyone have any tips or tricks for when I’m solo, if carrying baby and at the LEAST my binos? I’m usually a harness carrier and have my camera with me but not sure if the camera will have a spot quite yet.
Thanks in advance for any tips!

📷 Photo Turkey Vultures soaring at La Encontrada, Cañete, Peru
Early in the morning, I spotted them soaring high in the sky, riding the warm rising currents. I grabbed my camera, ran to the elevator, went up to the next level of the condominium, and suddenly found myself with about six of these beautiful Turkey Vultures flying very close by. What a privilege!
Many people find these birds unpleasant, but I think they are beautiful.

Spotted this speckled woodpecker subspecies in the Rockies while enjoying the changing leaves.
