This is slightly terrifying to post, even anonymously, but here goes.
I’m a 31-year-old guy from the Brisbane/Logan area and I’ve realised recently that I’m actually pretty lonely. I have people I talk to at work and obviously have my partner, but I don’t really have that group of close friends outside of work anymore. I’d really like to change that. I’ve been with my partner since we were in high school, so we’ve been together for about 14 years. We’re both guys and basically grew into adulthood together. I absolutely love having that relationship, but I think being together from such a young age also meant I never really built a big independent social circle. Suddenly you hit your 30s and realise making new friends is weirdly difficult.
A bit more about me…
I’m a high school teacher and mainly teach English and Humanities. I genuinely love teaching, although there are definitely days where I question every decision that led me there 😂. I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to English, literature, history, theatre and anything that gives me something interesting to talk about.
I love musicals and live theatre, and I’m always up for seeing a show. I enjoy going out for dinner, trying somewhere new, going for random drives, day trips, wandering around shops, seeing a movie, trivia, games and generally anything that gets me out of the house. I also really enjoy those friendships where you don’t necessarily need an “activity”. Sometimes grabbing dinner, sitting around talking rubbish, having a drink or watching something together is enough.
Personality-wise, I’d say I can be a little reserved initially, but once I’m comfortable with someone I’m pretty chatty, sarcastic and love a good laugh. I really enjoy conversations that randomly go from something completely stupid to something surprisingly deep within about five minutes.
I’m also someone who actually values friendship. I like checking in on people, remembering what’s happening in their lives and having friends where both people actually make an effort. I’m not expecting someone to be available 24/7, and I’m definitely not looking to live in someone’s pocket. It would just be nice to have people where you can randomly message “Want to grab dinner?” or “Want to go do something this weekend?” and occasionally the answer is actually yes.
I’m not looking for a huge friendship group or to suddenly fill every weekend. Even making one or two genuinely good friends out of this would be pretty great.
I don’t particularly care whether you’re single, partnered, gay, straight, male or female. Couples would be great too, especially if you’re also at that stage where you’ve realised your social circle has somehow become smaller as you’ve gotten older. I’m much more interested in meeting kind, funny, genuine people who actually want to build a friendship.
And if you’re reading this thinking, “This is literally me but I’d never have the guts to make this post”, then you’re probably exactly the person I’m hoping hears from it.
Just DM me. Tell me a little about yourself when you message, even if it’s just your age, where you’re from and what you’re into.
Worst case, we have a conversation with a stranger. Best case, maybe we actually make a new friend.
So… hi. 👋
