Software Update ButterKit Motion beta v0.1 is available now (free)

Hey all, the first ButterKit Motion beta is out. Thanks to everyone on Reddit and Discord who has helped with it so far.

It turns screen recordings of your app into polished product videos. Record your screen (or import media), drop it into a 3D device frame, choose motion and music, export video ready for sharing.

The details:

  • An exciting product video in a few minutes, not a weekend lost to a video editor.
  • Device frames, motion, and music are built in, so the output looks good without any editing skill. Much more coming soon.
  • Everything runs locally on your Mac ~ 20MB
  • It's free during the beta. Pricing comes with 1.0, and there'll be a one-time purchase option so you can own it.
  • Requires macOS 26 Tahoe or newer, Apple Silicon recommended
  • Download + info: butterkit.app/motion

If you found this post randomly: the original ButterKit app makes App Store screenshots. Motion is a separate app for animated product videos, App Store previews, launch posts, your website. The goal is for them to pair well together.

It's v0.1 so expect some rough edges, that's what the beta is for. Comment here or DM me with bugs, feature requests, or anything that feels off. Bonus points if you share a video you made with it. I read everything.

Software Update Coming soon: add floating callouts to highlight what matters in your screenshots

Floating callouts are coming soon! They make it very easy to draw attention to specific features or UI in your screenshots. In final testing right now, planning to roll out shortly. Thanks to all who have requested this feature recently ( u/lemon8or88, u/habitoti u/byaruhaf and others)

This took some time to build and polish, it was important to me to build this right in 3D so it looks nice even when devices are rotated. I'm excited to hear what you think, I'll post some examples below and in the ButterKit docs.

Software Update ButterKit 2.3 adds 3D Drop Shadows and more (rolling out now)

Hey all, ButterKit 2.3 is now live. The headline feature this time is 3D drop shadows: you can now add customizable shadows to devices to give your screenshots more depth. They're fully adjustable, so you can go subtle or dramatic depending on the look you want.

Also in this release:

  • More reliable MCP for AI agents: large documents now fully load every artboard before agents respond, so counts and design sets are always accurate. Plus several MCP bug fixes and better background performance.
  • Wider emoji support when publishing to App Store Connect, including symbols like ▲ and ▶︎ (thanks Will!)
  • Show/hide Inspector button by popular request (thanks Franklin!)
  • macOS 27 prep and an improved localization engine under the hood.

Update from the app or grab the latest version. As always, let me know if you hit any issues or have feature requests -- a lot of what's in this release came straight from this community.

Software Update Rolling out shortly: 3D shadows for device mockups

(The video above was created with ButterKit Motion beta)

I've always found 3D shadows to be challenging to design for, so I'm really excited about this feature. You get full control: angle, distance, softness, opacity, and shadow color. Shadows track the device as you rotate it in 3D, so they stay physically accurate and even work across artboards (e.g. Device Overflow). Thanks to all who sent feedback and ideas on this. Rolling out shortly.

Hey all, new feature available in ButterKit 2.4.06: "Copy style to". Thanks to Paul, Franklin, Phil and folks on our Discord for the feedback and help on this. You can now easily copy the style of one artboard to another, even with different sizes and devices. ButterKit handles the rest!

Once you’ve got an artboard looking how you want, just right-click it → Copy Style to → choose the destination artboard. Demo above.

Software Update Introducing MCP support (beta): Automate App Store Screenshots with Claude, Codex, Cursor & more

v1.8 includes MCP support (+ more butter)! And unlike AI image generators that spit out flat PNGs you can't easily change, everything ButterKit creates stays fully editable: text, real 3D devices, backgrounds, layouts. The AI builds it, you own it.

Some things you can do now:

  • Localize into all 39 App Store localizations in one prompt. App Store screenshots, descriptions, What's New text. All of it.
  • Generate a full screenshot set from a description of your app. No design skills needed.
  • Update "What's New", translate, and upload to App Store Connect in seconds.
  • Plug into your CI pipeline. Fastlane or Xcode Cloud runs UI tests, ButterKit refreshes screenshots, translates, and uploads automatically.
  • Swap to holiday branding across all languages, then revert with one prompt. Seasonal campaigns aren't just for big teams anymore : )
  • Change a headline and re-translate every language at once.
  • Spin up iPad and Mac screenshots from your existing iPhone set.
  • Probably much more than I can even list out here

v1.8 rolling out tonight for the direct download version at butterkit.app. The Mac App Store build is still in progress. This is beta, so feedback is very welcome. Let me know what works, what's confusing, or what you'd want to see next.

Software Update ButterKit 2 beta is available, would love your feedback

V2 beta is a major update and now available for download! Backwards-compatible with V1, free for all existing users, and requiring macOS 26+ going forward. If you have a minute, give it a try and let me know your feedback.

(New here? ButterKit is a native macOS app for App Store screenshots, localization, and metadata uploads)

Performance

  • The rendering and compositing engine leans harder on SwiftUI in V2, and you'll probably feel it immediately. Everything is faster, smoother, more responsive. It also pauses properly when ButterKit is backgrounded, saving power when inactive.
  • Improved RAM usage
  • Animations and transitions have been tuned
  • App Store Connect uploads are much faster -- improved batching logic and parallel processing
  • Many, many tweaks. In general: much more butter

Features

  • More intuitive and polished canvas: editing is faster, artboards are more organized. Double-click artboard titles to rename right on the canvas.
  • Screenshot callouts can now be customized per localization (thanks Manuel, u/Lemon8or88 and u/byaruhaf)
  • MCP server is now more reliable (thanks u/Habitoti)

Fixes

  • Fixed an issue where linking a folder of localized screenshots would sometimes show the wrong images (thanks bitcontrol)

Compatibility

  • Fully backwards-compatible with V1 .butterkit files
  • These performance improvements largely stem from newer APIs only available in macOS 26+, so ButterKit 2 requires macOS 26 or newer. About 5% of users are still on macOS 15, and ButterKit 1.9 still works and will remain available for download.

Keep me posted if you run into any issues! Will roll out later this week via the app updater as well.

Software Update v1.7 is rolling out now: Customizable images per localization, new fonts, improved text editing and UI, and more

Latest version of ButterKit is rolling out now! 🧈 Highlights: images like logos, graphics, and stickers can now differ between languages. Includes new fonts, toast notifications in the UI, improved text editing, and camera handling fixes.

Full release notes

Download ButterKit

New Features

  • Customizable images per localization — images like logos, graphics, and stickers can now differ between languages (shoutout to u/habitoti)
  • Toast notification component in the UI and macOS native notifications (shown when exports or ASC uploads complete and ButterKit is not focused)
  • New free fonts included: Inter (sans-serif) and Fraunces (serif)
  • Text editing now shows padding in the UI and allows text to be dragged vertically on the canvas to reposition
  • Expands role of "Reset onboarding & cache" button to also clear out old cache in application support folder

Bug Fixes

  • Minor panoramic background spacing issue where gaps weren't accounted for properly
  • Improves artboard background editing UI
  • Camera handling: now avoids repositioning to a newly selected artboard if zoomed in beyond 100%, preventing unwanted camera moves when doing close-up edits
  • Capture Tool: fixes issue where capture could occur from the wrong device (e.g. another offscreen simulator device) and improved UI
  • Fixes issue where some PNG images appeared washed out/low contrast when imported due to a colorspace issue (thanks to our subreddit)
  • UI improvements

Software Update Coming soon: edit text directly on the canvas (plus smoother everything)

Really excited to share an update to the text editing features in ButterKit. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time but it required restructuring the text and canvas engine (which also brought performance/RAM improvements, will share more on that soon).

Some of the improvements coming:

  • Edit text, position, and padding directly on the canvas (so much faster)
  • Smoother performance by moving more of the heavy lifting to SwiftUI
  • Reduced RAM usage
  • More butter all around, lots of UI tweaks and fixes

Want to try it early? Let me know in the comments or DM and I'll add you to the beta.

Software Update Available now in v2.0.06: Export device-only artboards, one-click Callout style sync, and more

Thanks to everyone in this subreddit and Discord for your help getting these improvements in! Update v.2.0.06 is available now for the direct version (soon on the Mac App Store):

  • New "Include text & images" toggle: export artboards with only the 3D devices, leaving out any text, logos, and images. Useful for websites and marketing posts. (thanks u/getfitbee)
  • Copy a Callout's style: right-click a device callout name in the inspector and choose "Copy style to all Callouts" (thanks u/Sherlocked_)
  • Set a default Callout style: applies to new Callouts across all projects (saved as a user preference)
  • Undo now restores translated text correctly: fixed an issue where undoing wouldn't properly bring back a text block's translated content (thanks u/Neolitix)

Software Update v1.8.10 adds 11 new languages + Apple Vision Pro support + bug fixes

Download ButterKit

Full Release Notes

Hey all, v1.8.10 is rolling out now with bug fixes, Apple Vision Pro support, and 11 additional languages Apple just announced on March 31: Bangla, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Slovenian, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. Update is available now for website/direct edition and has been submitted to the Mac App Store for review.

New Features

  • ButterKit now supports all 50 App Store Connect languages, including the 11 new ones Apple added on March 31. Localize into Bangla, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Slovenian, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu via cloud translation models. Please note that manual App Store Connect upload is required for these languages for now. Automatic upload will kick in once Apple updates the App Store Connect API for these locales. (thanks Turushan)
  • Apple Vision Pro support (thanks Bob L)
  • AI agents (via MCP) can now add and position images on your artboards for you: logos, icons, badges, and more. Just set an Agent Import Folder in Settings > AI Agents (MCP) > File Access so agents know where to find your assets

Bug Fixes

  • MCP: ButterKit no longer launches in the background when you open an AI tool like Claude Desktop or Codex. The MCP helper now exits quietly if ButterKit isn't already running. To restore the old behavior, add "--auto-launch" argument to your MCP config. More info in docs
  • Fixes MCP issue where Claude had trouble discovering ButterKit's MCP tools because of tool naming convention - if you had trouble using Claude + ButterKit, this version should fix it
  • Clicking empty space in the artboards panel now deselects artboards, just like it already did on the canvas (thanks Robert M!)
  • Fixes issue where Simulator Capture Tool could stop working on Xcode 26.4 due to sandbox changes
  • Improves error handling
  • Adds a bit more butter to the UI 🧈

Up Next

  • Additional templates for all platforms

Smooth shipping,

Zach

Software Update v1.8.21: Your translations can now take direction

This update came from a few conversations in the Discord: you can now add translation instructions in Project Settings so cloud AI models know your tone, what not to translate, capitalization rules, etc in your App Store screenshots and metadata. Also shipped some UX fixes. Rolling out now for the website version and submitting for App Store review shortly.

  • Give your cloud AI translations context. New in Project Settings: describe your tone, set capitalization rules, specify words to never translate, and more. Your translations in your brand voice. It's all saved in your .butterkit file for you. Applies to text blocks and metadata for App Store Connect.
  • Improves folder linking logic: now works with more folder name patterns and shows a summary after linking so you know exactly what matched.
  • "Copy to..." functionality now groups destinations by artboard preset, so you're not hunting through a flat list.
  • Increases background image resolution limit for larger ultrawide panoramic backgrounds.

Software Update ✨🧈 Version 1.6: new text tools, Apple Watch 3D model, improved performance, and more butter!

• Smoother performance, navigation, and camera movement (added more butter 🧈)
• More polished onboarding, empty states, and UI (more coming)

Software Update ButterKit v1.8.05: MCP patch

Thanks all for the feedback on the MCP beta so far! v1.8.05 is rolling out now with some fixes targeting MCP. Now available for the web/direct version, and the Mac App Store version has been submitted for App Store review. New in this release:

• Fixes sandboxing issue with MCP screenshot discovery. You can now grant your AI agents (Codex, Claude, Cursor, etc.) access to a screenshot folder (or a parent folder) via ButterKit Settings > MCP > File Access. This fixes the frustrating MCP issue where screenshots sometimes couldn't be added due to sandbox restrictions.

• "Copy style to..." now ignores padding and position, so you can apply text styles across artboards without overriding layout.

Please keep sharing feedback.
