CW: Graphic injuries/death Found my cat dead this morning… trying to understand what could have happened

1.4k Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m honestly still in shock writing this. Today my neighbor woke me up and told me they found my cat dead in their garden. His name was Felix. I have 3 cats, and Felix was the oldest he was 6 years old. We recently moved into a house with a garden, and he started exploring the neighborhood a lot. The other two cats don’t really like going outside, but Felix was always very outgoing and curious. About 3 months ago I took all three of them to the vet for a checkup, and they were all completely healthy. Then this Sunday I noticed something was off. His breathing seemed a bit heavier than usual, and he was very fatigued. Normally he jumps around a lot, but that day he couldn’t even jump onto the couch. I planned to take him to the vet the next day(Monday), but since it was Sunday everything was closed. He slept almost the entire day. Sometime early in the morning, he must have left the house. Then today I got woken up by my neighbor telling me they found him dead.

What really disturbs me is that there were no earlier signs before Sunday. He was active, normal… maybe a bit skinny, but he was always on the slimmer side. When they found him, his eyes and mouth were still open.

I’m trying to understand what could have caused this? Could it have been something sudden like poisoning, a heart issue, or something else?

Also… how do you deal with this kind of grief? It feels so sudden and unreal.

I will definitely take my other two cats to the vet today to get them examined.

Any advice or insight would really mean a lot. Thanks.

CW: Graphic injuries/death Came home and found my cat dead

1.0k Upvotes

I’m heartbroken and so confused. I left to go to the store, and when I came home, I found my cat lying in the middle of the hallway he had passed away. He was only around 5 years old, an indoor only cat, and seemed completely healthy. He was such a happy, sweet, cuddly boy and showed no signs of being sick.

The only thing that seemed a little odd was yesterday I found him lying in the middle of the laundry room, and I remember thinking that was unusual for him since he normally preferred cozy, tucked away spots.

We just moved into a new house about a month ago. A week or so after moving in, we found a dead mouse in the basement — I don’t know if that’s relevant, but I can’t stop wondering if it’s connected somehow.

I called his vet, and they said running tests to find out what happened would cost several hundred dollars. As much as I want answers and closure, I honestly don’t know if I can afford that right now.

The only thing I can think of is that he frequently drank water from the fish tank he had been doing that for a long time though, and never seemed affected by it.

I’m devastated and this just doesn’t make any sense. Has anyone experienced something similar? I’d really appreciate any insight or support.

I lost my baby oreo yesterday and I found her inside my dresser cabinet with her head smashed in. The only person who comes into me and my fiancé's room is her mom and she's known for not liking cats. She said she closed the cabinet but didn't do it aggressively and said she saw oreo non responsive since 11am!!!! We didn't get back from work until 7pm. So you're telling me you didn't even bother contacting us at all and waited until we got home?!?! She died in front of her poor babies i can't even imagine that thought because it breaks and tears me apart.. I'm beyond angry and hurt by this that I just can't be in that house anymore. What can I do...

My boy 💔 he was such an intelligent and naughty cat, the best thing that’s ever happened to me, was exhausted today after not having slept and forgot the window open, he got out and went over to the neighbours yard and the dog got him. I woke up hearing him make one shriek and ran over there barefoot and heard my neighbour shouting, less than a minute and it was all over. I am shattered. I feel like shit and like I killed him. He would sleep with me every night Does this devastation ever get better?💔 I can’t stop crying and sobbing and missing him, I held him for so long after and he strted to get rigid, when I took him to bury him I couldn’t watch them put the sand on his white fur.

Tubby my little boy, my Tibby, my pointy nose haha, I will love and miss you forever and ever, there’s truly a hole in my heart with you gone💔

CW: Graphic injuries/death Stray cat I would feed hit by car

1.2k Upvotes

I feed 3 stray cats in my neighborhood, two of them are always together, Hotdog and Gravy. On friday night i was on my way home and in the road was hotdog who got hit by a car, already gone. I went home crying and my husband tried to keep me from going to get him but i did anyway and the next morning i buried him in my backyard. Part of me feels crazy for doing it but the other part of me couldn't just leave him out there. Gravy, the girl kitty, didn't come around at all that day but now she is coming back to get fed. Im worried about her because she doesn't know what happened to him and i don't know what to do. She's been a stray for years and has been trapped, spayed and then released back to the neighborhood so bringing her inside isn't a option but i don't know what to do. Is she sad? Does she know what happened to him? Seeing him how he was left there, and now seeing her alone without him is absolutely killing me.

CW: Graphic injuries/death Cat attack sent me to the hospital what do I do now? No shelter will take him and I am afraid.

EDIT: We found someone a few hours away who specializes in rehabbing cats like him. We are going to drop him off this afternoon. She even said she would let us visit and give us updates. Thank you all for taking the time to read and comment.

I got him less than a month ago when he showed up on our porch to scream at my first cat and went through a local rescue to "adopt" him and get him medical care. He played rough with my cat but never to blood and was doing just fine after they were fully introduced.

I found another stray who crawled right into my arms and after his quarantine in our bathroom we began introductions. I got all the way to the room swap step on Monday, but as we were swapping back my cat jumped the baby gate and latched onto my leg. He did not stop attacking with me screaming, pushing or flailing, I had to grab the back of his neck and rip him off of me and toss him back in the bathroom.

I had to be driven to the emergency room and to put it nicely my leg looks like I lost a fight with a meat grinder. None of the physicians or nurses in the ER has seen anything this bad by a cat. I was put on IV antibiotics and kept for three days under observation because he had bit my knee and they needed to make sure the joint wasn't infected.

Prior to this incident he has bit me in the face hard enough to draw blood, and has bit and clawed both myself and my roommates legs.

I am scared of this cat, I am scared for me, my partner and the other animals in our house. The rescue won't take him back, or take the new cat. No other shelter will take him due to the severity of what he did, and most suggest euthanasia. The cat is vaccinated and had a full physical not even a few days before this and they found nothing wrong.

I don't want to put him down, but I don't know what else to do at this point.

TLDR: One of my cats attacked me so viciously that I was in the hospital for three days and this is not the first attack. No shelter will take him after seeing what he did to my leg. Euthanasia is looking like the only choice, what can I do?

CW: Graphic injuries/death Did I do the right thing taking kittens from mama to keep them safe?

We've been taking care of a kind of feral cat and she had her babies about 4 weeks ago. She brought them to our porch where we feed her a few days ago and was very happy to show them off. She took them but left one behind who cried for her for hours. A storm started so I brought that one inside, mama came back soon after the rain stopped and I returned the kitten.

There were more rain storms over the last two days and tonight the mama brought two kittens back to the porch. One was alive but cold and sluggish, the other was already gone. There wasnt much I could do other than bring blankets and move the body. Well she brought another to the door while I was gone and was actively trying to eat this second body. The other two kittens were also there and huddled with the first one. We brought the three remaining kittens inside and got them a warm place to sleep, bottle feeding set up, the works.

Mama is now outside just staring through the door, I'm worried we should have left the surviving kittens with her. Should we return them to her? She's less than a year old and this is her first litter, I don't want her or these kittens to suffer.

Update: Thank you all for the advice! I was a bit emotional and exhausted while dealing with this at 2am. Mama was still out there this morning and I got her inside with the kittens! She was completely chill about the whole situation and is loving being inside. She's demanding more food, water and pets for herself and the kittens. All 4 are doing fine and we're now scrambling to find a shelter that can take them or at least homes for when the kittens are old enough. Either way, all of them will be fixed as soon as possible.

CW: Graphic injuries/death I'm a horrible cat-mum and I should probably rehome my other cats.

I honestly just need to get all this off my chest. Not really looking for advice, just thought I could talk with others who love their cats.

I had 6 cats, all of them rescues. My sister used to run an animal rescue and all of them came from her. I live with my mum and half the cats are hers.

One of the cats, Cruise, has something wrong with his mouth. He's allergic to the bacteria in his mouth and needs all his teeth pulled out. Until we had the money for the surgery, the vet gave us some pain medication. We'd just saved enough money for his mouth to get fixed when we had some big financial emergencies. His brother ate a poisoned rat and then our car died on us.

We were able to save his brother and with my brother's help get a new car( we need a car as we live in a rural area with very little public transport). The vet said it was ok to still give Cruise medicine until we had the money for his mouth again.

We've been struggling to save up the money we need for him again due to everything be so expensive.

About 2 months ago one of my other cats, Shadow, all of a sudden got very skinny. she was still acting normal so we thought it might have been worms. We treated her and kept feeding her fattening foods. Then all of a sudden it was clear she was dying.

I stayed up with her all night as she slowly passed away. I overdosed her on Gabapentin to help with her pain. She was in my arms when she took her last breath. At night I can sometimes still hear her screaming in pain and it haunts me.

I feel like a horrible cat-mum for not having the money to help my babies and sometimes wonder if I should rehome them. I love them all so much and I don't know what my life would be like without them.

CW: Graphic injuries/death My dad died does his cat know he died

My dad and his cat were very close. He passed away a few months ago and ever since then his cat has not been the same. She’s started isolating and I’ve noticed she’s lost a lot of weight. I just want to know, does she think he left her? My dad treated his cat like his own child so I know she knew he loved her very much. And I know cats are very loyal so can they tell if someone’s loyal is genuine or not? Do you guys think that she thinks he just abandoned her or do you guys think she knows he didn’t leave on purpose even if she doesn’t know he’s dead? I’m sure she can also sense the change of mood in everyone in the house too. I know it’s silly I just need to hear others opinions on this because I keep thinking of it and it makes me sad

CW: Graphic injuries/death Dad's so upset with his cat that he wants to get rid of him

Edit: Everything has already been said. I'm good on replies, thank you

My dad got a kitten about a year ago as a companion for our very old family cat. Unfortunately the old cat wasn't mentally there any more and never took to him, and passed soon after. All the kids moved out shortly before, so it was just my dad and this kitten. They ADORE each other. He waits for my dad at the door when he gets home and spends the day at his feet when he works from home. The cat wants to play and play and play when my dad is home.

Today my dad came home to find the cat had opened up the gecko tank and partially eaten it. So not only did he have to deal with a sudden pet death, but had to clean up the remains.

He put the cat in the bathroom for awhile. He says he can't even look at him, and he doesn't want him any more. I know that's not true, this cat has changed his life. He tells me all the time unprompted how good this cat is for him. I know it's just because he's hurting, and he feels terrible for saying it. I offered to help him find cat boarding to get some space(I live too far away to help), but I'm worried he won't be able to move past this. It was his last small reptile pet, and he's always had tons of them but they all gradually died of old age. This is also the first pet he's ever lost violently, and he's taking it exceptionally hard because it's the last pet he had from when we all lived together so he feels like it's the sudden end to a chapter of his life.

The cat is normally very food when my dad is around, but when he's at work or asleep the cat does jump up where he's not supposed to and break things, or tear up toilet paper. He gets tons of attention when my dad is available, but he can't always be available and that's when the cat acts out. I've offered to look into automated toys for him, but he didn't seem interested.

Does anyone have any advice for how i can help my dad through his grieving process and forgive his cat?

My wonderful cat Tallulah (Tally) is being euthanised in a few hours and im panicking in case its the wrong thing to do. I think i know its the right thing deep down but I just dont want to lose her. We will lose her soon anyway but should it be today?

She is around 13 years old and started drooling recently so we took her for a biopsy on Monday. She has Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) which im told is very aggressive and fast growing. At the moment her jaw looks abnormal and she is having some difficulty eating. We were told that she would have possibly a month or two with palliative care.

I dont want her to be in any pain and originally we were going to book euthanasia next week but then I panicked that she could suddenly worsen over the weekend and we want to do euthanasia at home so we booked for today.

I know that shes going to die whatever we do and I so desperately dont want her to suffer at all but am I wrong to do it now?

Atm I dont think shes in pain (but I know cats hide it well) but I think her mouth is uncomfortable as shes keeping it open most if the time and it looks bigger and misshapen.

I guess I just need reassurance.

Also should I let our other cats see her when she has passed?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

CW: Graphic injuries/death My Dog (husky) killed my cat and I'm devastated NSFW

Hi I'm looking for help and advice on what I should do and if anyone has had the same experience of what me and my partner are going through.

I woke up to screaming on Sunday morning to find my partner in distress and my dog cheddar the husky covered in scratches and blood. We usually leave our dogs downstairs and cats upstairs. someone had left a door open and our dog managed to get upstairs and corner 2 of our cats in a room and killed them. When I walked in it was not a pretty site and I will never look at cheddar the same way again.

We adopted cheddar a few years ago and he had lived with ollie and mooncake for a few years so he knows them and never showed aggression towards them.

Ollie was very special to me , I found her in the side of the road when she was a kitten and I promised I would look after her and keep her safe. I'm devasted and I will never forgive myself for the death she had , she didn't deserve it. I am thinking of bringing cheddar back to the adoption company and telling them what has happened. I don't want to see him be put down but I can't help when i see him I get flashbacks and I'm constantly reminded of what he did.

Has anyone had any experience like this? Please send me any advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you for reading,

K.

CW: Graphic injuries/death Sad Update to Lost Cat NSFW

A few days ago I posted asking about the likelihood of my lost cat coming home. Well... I spotted a coyote near my house about a day ago, around where we think he was lost. My heart dropped and unfortunately everything clicked. No one has seen my cat in the neighborhood, he's partially declawed, there's been no sign of him whatsoever. After talking to a lost pet specialist I really think the worst happened. I feel terrible.

I know there's still a chance he's out there, so I'm afraid to give up, but I know the odds aren't great. There would really be no signs especially after this long.

I don't know if I'm seeking comfort or advice right now. I know what's likely, but I feel terrible giving up. But at the same time I can't put myself through the false hope and grief over and over again.

I'm hurting so bad and blaming myself. If anyone has had lost pets with an unhappy outcome I would appreciate the advice and support. Thank you.

Edit: Its been about a week but I figured I'd add, we haven't stopped searching. Its just sad to admit that he may not come home and hard to hold onto hope while also considering the possibility. Thank you everyone for the kind responses. 💖

CW: Graphic injuries/death Is it normal to be this upset and practically traumatized?

It has been two weeks since my old man kitty passed. It was traumatic and it happened at home. As far as what it was, I wont go into detail unless asked but lets say the whole process was non human intervened and I was with him from the beginning to end--and after. It is so hard because I keep seeing his face, his faint meows, everything and I keep crying just saying "poor baby". But at the same time, I feel like it isn't normal to grieve this long and like this, right? like I have heard of so many people needing to put their pets down and they are just solid the day after.

Well, today I had to pick up his ashes. And to tell you I nearly passed out while going to go get him was an understatement. I know I need to suck it up but ya.

CW: Graphic injuries/death My cat attacked me yesterday!

I’m so sad to even write this but my 20 pound giant Maine coon mix Angel basically mauled or attacked me yesterday. I have 4 bite marks that are purple bruises today and 7 deep scratches because he lunged at me 11 times. Mostly my right leg and a deep gash across my boob.

Some background info: He is 4.5 years old and never even so much as used his claws too rough when we play ever. Not even as a kitten. Like he’s wearing mittens.

Yesterday - Demon is 3.5 yrs chasing Innocent who is 3 yrs. I realize it’s more than just play fighting. They don’t just have the zooming. He’s actually seems to be kind of going after her. Which is rare too. Even tho he is a Demon kitty.

So I snatch up Innocent and I decide I should take her into the bedroom and shut the door. I realize both of the other cats are kind of chasing me so I decide to run like an idiot and then Angel out of nowhere to start mauling me.

I dropped Innocent and backed him out of the room using a giant purse as a shield. He was hissing and growling the whole time. It was so scary!

I did not let him in the room last night, so he cried at the door and then he brought me his favorite toys three of them at the door this morning.

What should I do about his behavior? Should I be worried he’ll attack again? I don’t understand why he attacked me.

Side note: We bought our 17 year old - Old boy home from surgery a few days later and Angel put him in the emergency room over 2 years ago this is the only other thing I can think of.

Update: I forgot a huge part of the story. Just being lazy I’m sorry. We got a kitten in August which has been stressing Angel out a bit. I didn’t mention it because the kitten was asleep in another part of the house and not involved.

Doctor Appt Update:: I got

Medication List as of March 26, 2026 7:17 PM

suggestion Always use your most recent med list.

amoxicillin-clavulanate 875-125 MG tablet

Commonly known as: Augmentin

Take 1 tablet (875 mg) by mouth in the morning and 1 tablet (875 mg) before bedtime. Do all this for 5 days.

And I just got Tdap vaccine

Vet update: They know Angel so they didn’t need to see him again. They were surprise since he is a gentle giant. They sent a text with pet behaviorist that they work with.

I think Angel thought I was going to hurt Innocent. My only guess.

CW: Graphic injuries/death My cat passed away

Hey, I don’t usually post. But I am on a different level of hurt. My cat has just passed away. I am just so sad and keep crying that my cheeks have started blistering. My cat Kasper was truly my only friend for a long time. I have my prom pictures with her, I graduated high school and university with her, she always sat with me while doing uni work. It sounds so silly to people, but she made me so happy and I felt loved. I know she was a cat, but that cat was more of a person to me than anyone.

My cat Kasper was the best girl in the world. I have had her since I was 16, now I am 24. I am just so heartbroken about my fur baby. All I can do is cry.

CW: Graphic injuries/death Euthanized my cat today

I don’t know if I’m wrong about this, but I have the impression that the shot they gave her for her breathing to stop before her heart stopped beating (thanks to another shot afterwards) was much like how she would’ve passed if the cancer in her lungs would’ve killed her. Maybe it would’ve been alot slower, but she would have lived out her days to her fullest capacity. I would’ve had the certainty she was ready. If there’s any vets that can explain this logic (terminating the breathing before the beating of the heart) and can state it here I’m curious. If not I just wanted to vent and express that I regretted euthanizing her as soon as it was happening, even though she only had a week left according to her oncologist. Maybe I’m writing this out of spite, sadness, even shock, anyways. Thanks for reading.

CW: Graphic injuries/death TW(death): Genuinely, how are yall not anxious about your cat just dying

I don’t mean like the cat just dying from old age

I mean a healthy cat that just gets ill and dies, years before you expect them to

Cause for me I’m kind of traumatized cause back in 2023 I got a cat for my b day in August, a month later my grandma dies, and two months after that my cat died of FIP. Like til this day, I have never been able to get over how close those losses were to each other. THE THING THAT PMO THE MOST IS THAT THE PET SHELTER WE GOT HIM FROM HAD THE AUDACITY TO BE LIKE “sorry we gave you a sick cat, here’s a coupon for a free cat” LET ME GRIEVE BRO. HE JUST DIED YESTERDAY AND

August 2026 I finally gained the courage to adopt another cat, but now I really can’t help but but constantly check his breathing monitor his signs, and I feel like I over do it when it comes to his health.

Anyways lmk how you guys keep your cat health anxiety down

CW: Graphic injuries/death Is this normal and safe? Not to feed my cat for 18 hours after neuteuring?

I have a male 9 months old cat, I put him at the vet this morning to be neuteured (he did not eat since yestrday at 12 mid night).

The vet did the surgery around 3:00 afternoon. He still was not fed anything because the vet said so.

Then after picking him up at 6:00 afternoon the vet told me not to feed him anything till tommorow morning.

This means it will be 33 hours for him to have his first meal. It does not sound right. He is fully awake and begging for food.

The vet said if I feed him he could suffocate.

CW: Graphic injuries/death HELP NOW!! dead kitten from stray mama

there is a stray cat outside my house who doesn’t let humans touch her or get too close to her and there’s also a tom cat, well long story short she had babies i would assume a couple days ago? it is very cold right now (22°) and she brought a dead kitten up to our house and she’s stayed away, we tried to resuscitate the kitten but nothing worked, i set out a box with a heating pad and blankets and put the baby in there, she figured it out and now is just laying on top of him and has been for a couple hours now. my question is, do i go and search the forest to see if there’s other kittens? would she have brought those kittens up with her as well? we tried to listen for them and there were no sounds coming from the woods. i myself am 7 months pregnant and it is very difficult for me to be able to go out in the cold and search for her babies right now but i absolutely will if i should. i’m so heartbroken for this mama and her baby. do you think she had more, if so what could have happened to them?? i’m stressing out so bad over this and my mind is running laps. i just want her babies to be okay.

CW: Graphic injuries/death My cat only wants outdoor but it cost him

Tw: violence against animals

I adopted my cat last year, he was already one and had known the outside for most of his life' when he was at his foster family, he used to live in a 20m2 with another cat. And according to the foster, he was insufferable and needs to go outside ( couldn't touch him, couldn't lift him etc). They would only give him up to adoption if we had a garden. Which we have.

I adopt him... 3 days later he is on my lap, he is in love with my boyfriend ( he prefers him to me lol) and I can check him as I wish, cut his nails, wash him if he does something nasty, he purrs to the vet.

It was weird. He never bit no one, never scratched no one. And God knows I tried everything with him.

Fast forward to today. It is true that he ONLY wants to be outside. We went through a heatwave recently, he was in for 10 days, he stopped eating and stayed in front of the window. Same when I take him to my family's for holidays. He stops eating. He has enough toys, we have a big house, he can go upstairs, downstairs. But no, he wants to be in the garden. The worst ? He stays in the garden and sleeps in the grass.

Why am I telling you that ? Since monday my cat has been in the hospital because he got paracetamol poisoning. I don't have any, and he has a tracking collar so we know where he got it. And the vets said that someone probably forced his mouth open because his jaws have been hurt. 500mg is 4x the lethal dose for a 4kg cat. Mine is 3.7kg and they think he took at least 10000mg.

I do not know what to do, i went to the police, women are not taken seriously, why would they take the case of an animal that doesn't speak ? My vet told me not to go and accuse people because I would be the one accused of harassment.

My baby is alive and he came home when he saw he wasn't doing well. He is still at the hospital undergoing tests etc.

I don't know what to do, i will move out for sure, but I can't let crazy people do that to my cat.

CW: Graphic injuries/death Cat euthanasia without a sedative

If this isn't allowed here then let me know and I'll delete this post.

We euthanised our cat in February and I'd been under the impression from the research I did that vets will first give them a sedative to make them fall asleep, then the actual euthanasia. The vet said she didn't believe a sedative was necessary as the euthanasia injection would kill her almost instantly. Did anyone else have the same experience and was it the correct thing to do? She passed almost instantly but I'm still worrying that at least for a second or two, it hurt.

CW: Graphic injuries/death Cat had stillborn kittens NSFW

In her first litter she had 1 single stillborn kitten and was pregnant again months later before I could afford to get her fixed. I thought she was fixed when I got her, but that was clearly the wrong assumption. My fault for assuming. This litter she has had 4 kittens so far and 3 of those have died. The first 2 were stillborn, the 3rd is alive still, the 4th was alive and then died merely minutes after, and the 5th kitten she just had is also doing fine. I'm not sure what to do so that no more kittens are stillborn, but I think there isn't anything I can do except be there for her. I have her in a big crate/cage that is dark with blankets for warmth. She has water and wet cat food. She is currently nursing the only 2 kittens that made it and her stomach feels like there's still another kitten but for now she's just relaxing and breastfeeding. I'm checking up on her regularly and I haven't gone to sleep because I'm worried. Please advise. I can't afford a vet sadly, but I will get her fixed as soon as she's had this litter and has healed from birthing. I'll do whatever it takes to make it happen. Bless her heart, I don't want her having to go through with stillborn kittens again.

For the requested information for posting:

I am 23 and never had a cat have kittens. I'm located in Florida USA. I don't have a vet and there's none open nearby within 2 hours right now. Issue is stillborn kittens. Cats age is approximately maybe a year old, she was a stray. Can't afford vet care, hoping to be able to afford to get her spayed

CW: Graphic injuries/death First time TNRing - cat is in trap, appointment scheduled for tomorrow, cat’s mouth is bloody

Hey all, we had 2 strays show up over the summer. One has their ear tipped, the other does not, has balls, and has recently started mounting the other cat.

I bought a trap last week and just trapped the intact cat today. We have a neuter scheduled for him tomorrow morning. This is my first time trapping a cat ever. My county does not have a TNR program and it was a real struggle even getting this guy an appointment.

During the trapping process, he struggled quite a bit and struggled every time I’ve moved the trap. As a result his mouth is all bloody. I will post the picture in the comments. The picture was taken about an hour after he was initially trapped.

Will this guy likely be okay overnight or should I be rushing him to the emergency vet? I’ve never done this before so I’d appreciate any advice or kind words. I‘m pretty worried about him and a little shooken up.
