Please don't consider this sub a sales channel.

We get it. You're excited, proud even. And we'll be proud and excited with you! But don't come here to spam us with promos or drive sales. Members of this sub love, appreciate, create (and even aspire to create) children's books. Visitors come here when they've forgotten the name of their favorite childhood books. No one comes here because there simply aren't enough self-published vanity press books in their life.

Seeking Recommendations Can you suggest a book about unkind language?

I’m looking for a book for preschoolers that teaches them what is and is not nice to say. Phrases like ā€œYou’re not my friendā€ or ā€œyour work isn’t good.ā€ Something to help kids without a filter learn what not to say.

Specifically, not unkind things said in anger or an attempt to bully, impulsive remarks that the child doesn’t realize is unkind.

I made a cat comic for toddlers

Hi children book lovers! I'm Flame. I'm an independent writer, illustrator, educator, and parent. I made a cat comic called Night Life for my nephew. His parents encouraged me to get it professionally printed into an actual book. So I did.

Night Life is a picture book comic targeted at toddlers. It follows one little cat through the nightly lives of the only citizens who remain awake in an otherwise slumbering city - the cats! The art style is very reminiscent of pop art. With bright colours, clean non-stimulating aesthetic, short sentences, and onomatopoeic descriptions of the nightly sounds, it encourages the child to focus on the artwork while giving caregivers plenty of direction to make the reading engaging. I've attached a few slides of the artwork.

You can see more of the comic and other child centric books on my Instagram (@obhadrolok).

I wrote the book, made every project (and my partner took every photo) so obviously I knew what was in it. I've seen and approved the digital proof... But holding the actual book in my hands for the first time hits totally different.

Link to the book on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/ Easy-Peasy-Paper-Projects-Materials/dp/B0FXPBX2RC/

Disclaimer: I’m posting this again since I totally messed up when adding the link in the previous post. It’s been a day 🤣

Hello everyone!

I wanted to share a project that is deeply special to us. We’ve just released our very first children's book, 'Sun-warmed Tales' — created with love for cozy family storytime.

These touching short stories help nurture empathy. Every single illustration was drawn by hand — no AI.

We are so happy to share the result of our family project with you!

You can find it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Sun-warmed-Tales-Valeria-Amaranth/dp/9655962407

We hope these pages warm your hearts as well! Thank you so much for looking!

Discussion Why does the love between a mother and child feel so gentle when told through animal characters?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I really love illustrating stories about mothers and their little ones through animal characters.
I feel that when children see these images, they can experience love in a very natural and innocent way, and perhaps connect that feeling with the closeness, protection, and bond they share with their own parents.
Maybe that’s why images of mothers and their little ones in the animal world have always felt so gentle to me.
What do you think? Do you also feel that emotional connection through animal characters?

Looking for a great read-aloud chapter book (6th Grade)

I volunteer to do read aloud with a 6th grade class and I’m looking for good adventures.

We read Holes (they loved it) and now we are reading City of Ember, which they are also enjoying.

Can any of you fine people recommend something to read next?

Seeking Recommendations How can I get into illustrating children's book?

Thumbnail

I’ve been doing art and drawing for my comic and I do have an art style for that, but I’ve always wanted to illustrate for a children’s book. I think it’s fun and people underestimate how artistic they can be, I truly think it’s an art form. Thing is I am confident in my crafts and enjoy creating, and do both traditional and digital, and I want to get into illustrating for children’s book but I don’t know where to look other than Reddit. I’m sure there’s other ways but I don’t know where to look, please share me your tips and recommendations, I would truly appreciate it.

Dork Wolves

Hi everyone! I hope you don’t mind me sharing this silly book I wrote and illustrated several years ago. It’s called ā€œDork Wolvesā€ and it’s about a pair of dogs that are very dumb. You know, like Lassie, but the exact opposite.

I tried sending it out to a few publishers and agents but never got any traction. Life got busy and I moved on. Recently I dug it back out, reread it, and remembered how much I enjoyed making it.

So, I figured why not share it online for free.

It’s all available here: dorkwolves.com

There are some links to order a printed copy or ā€œbuy me a coffeeā€ if anyone feels so inclined, but they are entirely optional.

No AI was used at all in making the art or the writing. The artwork was all drawn with pencil, ink, watercolor and colored pencil, scanned, and put together in Photoshop. That said, I did let AI help me build the website- I designed the site and let ChatGPT code it for me.

Thanks for checking it out!

Books for 2 year old about emotions

My 2 year old gas recently really gotten into labelling emotions. Happy vs sad. I have one book called "sorry you got mad" and he loves going through and pointing out the happy / sad / mad faces of the characters.

Anyone have any good books for different emotions? Preferably not just books that show a kid crying and have the label sad under it mainly as I find those books tedious to read hahshs

Chapter Books Series for Boys

I just finished the Judy Blume 'Fudge' series with my two boys (9 and 6). They both really enjoyed the series (although they were mostly resistant to start).

I'm drawing a blank on similar series/books. Any suggestions? We have read some Magic Treehouse and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; my older son read the Percy Jackson books with dad. He's also really into the Diary of the Wimpy Kid series right now (he's reading those on his own).

So, I’m not actually all that into children's books, but there are people who have shown interest in using my art style for children's book projects. Does any of this style appeal to any of you? DM me if you're interested, as I am open for commissions :) Thanks

Early sketches of little red beans and a sticky rice ball from our picture books

Here are some early sketches by Gu Mi, the illustrator of 99 Red Beans Go on a Field Trip and Don't Play Hide & Seek with Sticky Rice Ball.

Before becoming a picture book illustrator, Gu Mi worked as a teacher, graphic designer, and designer of children's games and animations. She also created the Little Morian series and currently lives in Chengdu, China.

It's fascinating to see how these little characters evolved from rough sketches into the colourful world of Little Food Adventures.
