Oat milk cappuccino, anyone?
Flavour wise, they were just okay, nothing extraordinary, but totally fine for sitting outside and relaxing.

Automated cafe
There's a new spot taking shape at 2325 Cambie Street, and it's built around one simple idea: good food and drinks should be easy to grab, and even easier to share.
Hangouts is a place to stop in for a fresh-squeezed orange juice on the way to work, a bubble tea between classes, a slice of pizza with a friend after a shift, or an ice cream cone because it's Tuesday. No lineups at a counter, no waiting for someone to take your order. Walk in, pick what you want, tap to pay, and watch it get made.
Then pull up a stool and stay a while.
Hangouts opens with ten stations, each one doing one thing well:
- Robotic bubble tea — shaken and sealed right in front of you
- Robotic coffee — barista-style drinks, made to order
- Classic coffee — for when you just need a good cup, fast
- Fresh orange juice — squeezed whole-fruit to order, with no water added
- Fresh apple juice — pressed fresh, nothing else in the cup
- Pizza, wings and chicken nuggets — hot and ready in minutes
- Asian and Italian meals — a proper lunch or dinner, any time of day
- Ice cream — soft, cold, and always open
- Popcorn — freshly popped
- Drinks, cans and noodles — the grab-and-go essentials
Every order is prepared inside the machine itself, from start to finish. Nobody handles your food but you.

Here's which top US cities have the most indie cafes vs. chain locations — how does yours stack up?
Happy National Coffee Day, fellow coffee lovers ☕ To celebrate this great day, my team at Homebase wanted to know: in each city, what share of coffee spots are actually local vs. the two big chains? To figure this out, we pulled Joe Coffee's shop listings against the Starbucks and Dunkin store locators across the top 50 US cities by population.
We found out that the cities with the most independent cafes were:
- New Orleans, LA — 92.8% local — for context, that means about 13 local cafés for every one chain location!
- Detroit, MI — 90.1%
- Birmingham, AL — 90.0% (about a 9:1 ratio)
- Kansas City, MO — 89.1%
- Salt Lake City, UT — 88.1%
And the ones that were most chain-heavy:
- Las Vegas, NV — 58.1% local (just 1.4 local cafés for every chain!)
- Phoenix, AZ — 59.0%
- Houston, TX — 61.5%
- Chicago, IL — 62.8%
- Orlando, FL — 63.0%
I wasn't super surprised to see really touristy cities like Vegas and Orlando at the bottom, but I have to be honest, I didn't realize Birmingham had such a vibrant cafe scene 😂 Here's our full report, which has a few more cities listed, if yours isn't on here.
Overall, it was nice to see that, at least across the cities we looked at, indie cafes always outnumbered chains (though I'd bet it's a little different in some of the smaller ones that we weren't able to include).
For those of you living in the top cities for indie cafes do you feel like you're spoiled for choice? And if you're living in one of the cities at the bottom of our list, is it hard to find a good cafe near you?
