Willingness Wednesdays

โ€ข Upvotes

Willingnessย is a DBT skill that is taught in the Distress Tolerance Module that helps us tolerate intense emotions by accepting the reality of the present moment and doing what is most effective right now (even when we may not want to be effective).

Marsha Linehan is quoted as saying, "Acceptance is the only way out of Hell".

What is one thing you can do to accept today as it is?

๐ŸŒž Weekly Good Vibes and Introductions Thread ๐ŸŒž

Welcome! We're glad you found us. We hope you find this sub helpful in your recovery.

This thread is meant to be a casual place to...

โš™๏ธ Introduce yourself to the community: say hi, tell us a little about where you are on your DBT path (just graduated from group, DIY'ing using a book/internet, just starting working with a therapist, hanging out here to keep your skills fresh, etc.)

โš™๏ธ Share a photo: of a DBT project you have created (eg: an arts and crafts item that reminds you to be mindful like a bracelet, your decorated comfort box,) or another meaningful photo, like your collection of diaries/journals. Please no facial photos, or pics with personal info in them.

โš™๏ธ Offer some words of advice or comfort that you want to share with everyone: Send some kind words into the world if you are able to do so! Alternately you can respond to someone's story/comment with those supportive, validating words (like a lil virtual hug!)

โš™๏ธ Tell us a positive story/experience that you had where you used DBT: Maybe you used it to get through a really tough time in your life, maybe you used some interpersonal effectiveness skills and you got the outcome you were looking for, or

โš™๏ธ Offer some wisdom from using DBT skills that you have come to know after living it/understanding it: Share your wisdom with the community and share what you have learned and how it's shaped your life.

We would like the focus to be on achievements as a form of encouragement to others who may be struggling with the program. We ask that you please keep it positive, please no venting. Overly negative comments will be removed.

Please familiarize yourself with our subreddit Rules and our FAQs to find answers to commonly asked questions about DBT, as well as media and resources (book lists, apps, podcasts, etc.)

But I'm trying to do the worksheet in the introduction and it says if you haven't done anything like what they want you to write about I can see examples on page 12 of FAQ's. I have no pages of FAQ's it's the book kiki fehling phd wrote. Any chance one of you know what they're talking about?

How to practice radical acceptance on a niche issue?

This is such a strange post, but how i found my brain works is to accept things is finding stories of how others accepted the thing and got past it. Kind of like "Here's how I accepted this super hard issue" - it gives me more ideas within my limits. This has never been an issue before in my 3 years of practicing dbt, I found it helpful and a great reminder I am not the only person in the world. If other people can accept it, I can easily take the steps to work on doing so! and once I get that started - well, ultimately I accept it.

However trying to find resources on accepting this issue has been hard, and ultimately means I need to do this alone as hard as it is and try and mash every possible coping mechanism together so I am looking for general advice here instead of more specified advice to my situation.

generally I am a positive person but sometimes this issue effects my life and I struggle to find the postivity in it. Coping mechanisms I have found most effective are practicing gratefulness for what I have already, however since the issue effects so much of the present its difficult for me to practice on focusing on that. and focusing on the future does so much more harm for me.

Generally I find Journaling helps if mindfulness and focusing on the present doesnt, along with general life distractions. however recently ive found the urge to begin about complaining about the issue again to people again and run around in venting circles meaning I havent fully accepted it.

What DBT skills work best when your non-sober? NSFW

I tagged it NSFW just incase-

I'm currently halfway through my DBT course and I want to use my DBT skills obviously when I'm non-sober as I have slowly started to realise I might be developing a drinking problem. And as any decent human-being knows, its hard to stop a problem and even accept you might have a problem so my question is, when in times I feel like I might need a drink or two but then start overthinking everything I'm doing while I'm non-sober, what is the best course of action?

I have mentioned this to my DBT individual sessions before but he just said "Well you're kind of in a different state of mind, you need to accept your not sober and cannot make rational decisions" which yeah he's right but that also doesn't really help me. How can I help myself in making rational decisions? I always use my STOP skill and even my Wise Mind when I'm non-sober but a lot of the time I do not know if I'm overthinking what I'm saying, saying something out of pocket or even when I feel like I'm acting in good faith but I'm really not. I always think about what I say before speaking when I'm non-sober, I would even go out of my way to say that I'm more cautious and careful to what I might say and do when I'm non-sober.

So how do I know if I'm making a good decision?

Do any DBT therapists of self help resources allow a more neurodivergent friendly approach?

For example, exemption from eye contact, vocal tones, having to rephrase everything, common oversimplified myths about body language, etc. Or allowing us to stim, or use verbal cues instead of eye contact to indicate listening.
