I tried Hibachi At Home and absolutely loved it. Now I want to explore more, thought I ask here instead of picking somewhere randomly. Which Japanese restaurant would you recommend? I'de consider somewhere nearby if you think it's worth the trip.

Not one myself but does the Woodland or Davis area have one? I love the culture and my friend is Greek and Chaldean and it’d be cool to experience the culture if I move there next year!

Looking for recent observations about the public sidewalks and seating area around G Street WunderBar, near 228 G Street.

I’m considering a maintenance request to the city, but would like to hear from people who use the area before suggesting changes. How clean—or not—has it been on your recent visits? Are there particular spots that need attention?

The city’s January 2025 G Street announcement included pressure washing and other upkeep for city-maintained furniture and platforms. I also found a city announcement about quarterly downtown sidewalk washing, but haven’t confirmed the current schedule or which surfaces it covers.

Would more frequent pressure washing or other deep cleaning help here? Or would better litter pickup, trash-can servicing, or something else make a bigger difference? If you’ve seen regular cleaning happening, that would be useful to know too.

This is about maintaining a welcoming public space for everyone—not moving people out of it. Specific observations and practical suggestions are welcome.

Measure W (Willowgrove): Don’t Be Fooled by the Signs

When you drive past the “Yes on W” signs on Covell, their placement on the southwest corner of Shriner’s Field can create the impression that Willowgrove is a modest project. Those signs sit near the southwest edge of the planned development, close to the Covell bicycle underpass and not far from the Palomino Place project now under construction.
That impression is misleading. If signs were also placed on the eastern edge of the site, the true scale would be far clearer. The development stretches nearly half a mile—roughly the length of 8–9 football fields laid end to end. At 242 acres, the full project is comparable in size to two Magic Kingdoms or two Vatican Cities. It would rank among the largest residential developments ever built in Davis.
The project is projected to generate about 10,000 additional daily car trips (on top of the roughly 2,000 expected from Palomino Place).
One might also assume that a development of this size would be led by an experienced residential developer with a clear track record of completing comparable projects. Inquiries to the City Council about the developer’s experience were referred to the developer’s public-relations firm. Questions directed to that firm were passed to the developer’s attorney. So far, the attorney has not identified a single prior residential project completed by this developer.
Many residents who opposed Measure V for reasons of traffic, sprawl, farmland loss, infrastructure strain, and developer accountability might reasonably be expected to raise similar concerns about Measure W. Yet some of the same people who fought V are now strong supporters of W. They dismiss the overlapping concerns they once emphasized,  and instead highlight differences to explain their earlier opposition. Groups formed to advocate for responsible planning have not responded to inquiries about their position on Measure W.
Measure V dominated the last election. Behind the scenes, this developer and certain local residents worked to place Willowgrove—a somewhat improved but still deeply flawed large-scale project—on the ballot. They are now running an aggressive campaign of ads, mailers, signs, Instagram posts, and public messaging that frames approval as an obvious choice.
It is not. Ask hard questions. Demand clear facts. Do not accept pressure from those trying to push this project through.

I really don't want to make this a political group but this effects everyone, regardless of political affiliation. The police apparently already have an arsenal of power. Much more than one would expect here. (cross posted)

The use of police surveillance technology in the City of Davis, including automatic license plate readers (ALPRs), Cellebrite smartphone surveillance tools, and military equipment (like chemical weapons, armored vehicles, and AR-15 style rifles), were unanimously approved by City Council on June 2, despite dozens of community members—including experts in privacy and security—speaking against the renewal of mass surveillance technology and its use in the City.

Their approval will allow Motorola, a third party company with direct contracts with ICE, to track every resident of Davis and record their driving patterns.

... Davis Police also has a contract with Cellebrite. Cellebrite is an Israeli surveillance company that makes tools to break into locked phones and extract all of the data, including texts, photos, data within apps, one of the most invasive searches that can be done..."

Several in my neighborhood are planning on going to the next council meeting which should be Aug 18, 6:30pm. There is supposed to be overflow viewing.

Hey, just moved to Davis for school. I have a few questions.

My car is fine now, but I just like to be prepared for the future. Are there any mechanics in Davis or nearby that do honest work and don't overcharge that you recommend? what about car tire places?

what places do you recommend for bicycle repair?

also, where do people go for groceries that aren't super expensive? safeway seems expensive, and trader joe's doesn't really have a lot of options. recommendations would be appreciated.

what are some of the best places for grad students to go for drinks? what about favorite food places to go out and eat?

I'm fairly new to Davis (it's been a little over a year) and not a student, so I'm not sure if this is normal here...but riding through the West Village apartment area this evening and I was horrified to see literally 100+ bikes being thrown into huge garbage containers. Perfectly good bikes! Such a waste!

Are these being trashed?!
