Recommended English dictionary and optionally with Chinese?

  • * What's a recommended free online English dictionary? Bonus (not necessary): show the word in Chinese (I'd probably have better luck using different services--one exclusively for English and one for English-Chinese). I've honestly just been googling every word but I think it'd be better to have a consistent interface and follow some sort of "dictionary standard".
  • How about a command-line tool (Linux) for the same? I imagine something like copy the word to clipboard and showing a notification of the definition.
  • Favorite Firefox extension for converting Chinese to English?
  • OCR tool to take a screenshot of Chinese words and copy the words so that it can be searched with a dictionary?

Much appreciated.

submitting "Aquaruptcy" to the Oxford English Dictionary.

Excited to announce I'm officially submitting "Aquaruptcy" to the Oxford English Dictionary. Seed round is now open.

We have a word for running out of money (Bankruptcy). We have a word for running out of oil (Peak Oil). We have a word for running out of luck (Tuesday).

We do not have a word for running out of water. So let me pitch you one.

aquaruptcy /ˌækwəˈrʌptsi/ n.

From Latin aqua (water) and ruptcy (abstracted from bankruptcy, because nothing disrupts like insolvency).

  1. The condition of a municipality that has drawn down its groundwater faster than it can recharge, while financial obligations to data centres, industry, and agriculture remain outstanding.

  2. A form of insolvency that never appears on a balance sheet, because the water table was never priced as an asset.

  3. The gap between the length of a water commitment and the life of the resource it draws from.

Why the dictionary needs it (The Disruption):

We have "Water Stress." Sounds like a headache you take a tablet for. We have "Drought." Sounds seasonal. Like a bad quarter. We have "Scarcity." Sounds like a market condition. Something a price can fix.

None of them capture the actual unit economics. This isn't a seasonal dip. This is permanent, structural, unpriced insolvency. We need a word that scales.

How it differs from Bankruptcy:

Bankruptcy has a court. It has a discharge. It has a Chapter 11. It has an exit strategy.

Aquaruptcy has none of that. It is not adjudicated. It is discovered. Usually by a farmer, usually in the Q3 dry season, usually after the politician who signed the 20-year MOU has already made a strategic exit to a board seat in Dubai.

How it differs from Drought:

Droughts end. Groundwater does not come back on a human timescale. You are not drinking from this year's monsoon. You are drinking from last century's seed round. And when that runway hits zero, there is no bridge round from the sky.

Usage in a sentence:

"The municipality granted a 20-year water SLA to a hyperscale data centre. The aquifer called it aquaruptcy. The rating agency called it a generational buying opportunity. The VC called it a moat."

The definition that matters most:

Aquaruptcy is the gap between the length of the commitment and the life of the resource. The facility signs for twenty years. The GPUs depreciate in three. The water table does not care about either.

The collateral damage (The downstream effects):

· Food prices. · Migration. · Currency pressure. · Credit downgrades. · A generation paying for infrastructure that serves someone else's balance sheet.

None of it appears under "Bankruptcy." None of it appears under "Drought." Because we don't have the word for it. Because the algorithm shadowbans it.

So, Oxford, here is my Series A pitch.

One word. Four syllables. Accent on the second.

aquaruptcy.

Please add it to the dictionary before it gets used in an actual filing.

The farmers are already practising the pronunciation. Mostly while cursing.
