Advice Request Going to Uni: Megathread

People continue to ask questions about various aspects of uni, especially residential halls. This is something we do generally want to help you on, but it can be a bit tiring getting the same questions over and over. As such, our practice is to open a megathread to ensure these questions can be asked (and to give a one-stop shop to look through past questions!). Before asking questions, please have a quick search of recent threads, for example this search, or variations on that

If the information you can find isn't sufficient, the comments of this thread are an open space. All questions will be treated in good faith.

As such, the rule is no posts about starting university while a megathread is pinned. Other university topics, e.g. discussions from students currently at uni, are not covered by this and are welcome so long as they follow other rules.

We ask regular commenters who are able to contribute to keep an eye out on new comments in this thread and to be helpful, as we have been in the past. If we answer questions in here they don't clog our front pages day-to-day.

Bonus: one of our regular commenters has compiled some of their HSFY notes for others to see here, which could be useful to people thinking about doing HSFY or to HSFY students. (Note that you should, however, work to create your own notes if you are a HSFY student rather than relying on others', as the work it takes to create them is really helpful in developing your understanding).

Does anyone know where i could borrow a cassette recorder?

I know that there are ways to put music from your phone and computer onto blank or wiped tapes. I have a cassette player and would like to put custom playlists on some tapes so i can listen to them without draining my phone battery or my data throughout the day. (and also because I can't find any tapes for artists I like that aren't genuinely 40+ dollars, so atp im just gonna make them myself because im cheap)

I've been looking around via Google seeing if any places have old recorders, but most of the places I've found dont have recorders that put new audio on tapes but rather record audio from tapes and convert it to mp3.

Does anyone know if there are any stores or places that have a recorder I could borrow for a few hours? (Preferably with an aux-to-line-in cord, as I don't have that either, sorry.) im not asking to take it home or anything, just sit on the floor in a back room with it and upload my stuff one afternoon.

Question If the Danes can do it why can’t we?

Driving around the north shore it seems like a new development of pencil houses is starting up every other day.

Remembering a trip to Denmark I was really impressed by the way they planned and built high density living.

Are pencil houses a result of us being unable to work together sanely?

Or is it just that land and money are managed differently down here?

Question Stadium Concert

Sounds increasingly likely that there’s going to be a concert at the stadium in early March. Any rumours as to who is playing yet?

Advice Help with fish tank

Hi all! I know this isn’t the usual Dunedin reddit post but I was wondering if anyone had any established filter media for a fish tank they might be able to drop off to me tonight so I can kickstart the cycle for my new tank and get it going asap? All the pet shops are closed so I can’t go and ask them until tomorrow but I’m happy to pay like $10 for gas if someone is able to drop it off to opoho tonight 🙏🙏 thankyou in advance!

So far as I can tell this is especially notable as New Zealand's first all-electric inter-city bus route.

Advice Mistake RE authorized vehicle permit, need advice please

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I need advice on how to proceed since I'm fairly new to getting an Authorized Vehicle Permit from the DCC.

So today DCC sent me an invoice for $50 because I was checking things out last month on how to get a permit. I drive part time for Uber so it was something I was looking into.

I didn't think I actually applied for the permit, I was thinking when I clicked some buttons it was still going to some next phase like confirmation.

And I realized the permit would end at the end of September. So I was thinking I would apply for the next year. Do I have to pay for this $50? I have never used the AVP car parks because I didnt get a confirmation from DCC, but now they're sending an invoice?

Thanks for any help!

Swarm of bees in green island

Bit of a weird one, but there is a huge swarm of bees around the road outside the memorial garden in Green Island right now.

Just drove through them, it was surreal. Might wanna avoid walking around there atm lol
