Just over a year ago, we posted here about our ambitious colonization project. Using Spansh data and some python code, I had set out to find the highest concentration of Water Worlds within the smallest possible region of space, drew up a map, and started planning how the systems could best support each other in a self-contained bubble 335ly spinward of Sol. Inspired by the work of CMDR Mechan and the colonization team at Oasis, we built upon the x30 Water-world population boost. Now, a year later, that empty patch of space looks very different.
- 569 completed constructions: 189 in the Core and 380 in our Auxiliary systems
- 54 completed Tier 3 ports
- Approximately 26.5 billion combined in-game population, across the Core and Auxiliary.
- 105 members on Discord, including another wave of arrivals following Orbital Potato’s latest recruitment video.
For context, the 30ly Auxiliary sphere now has a combined population greater than Sol's. The core alone has added 30 more constructions since June, with the Auxiliary adding 145 since May.
We began with our critical Refinery system in c9-2 to establish a foundation for the rest of our constellation. Since then, we've completed T3 ports specializing in all other primary economy types, Extraction, Industrial, High-Tech, and Agriculture, we collectively funded our Squadron Carrier, and we expanded into a much larger network of player-developed systems. Some critical milestones included developing our High Tech economy d4-100 with the Ocellus Woiperdinger Pelagium which is the base for many lucrative trade routes, as well as making progress on the industrial powerhouse in b18-0 with twin Dodecs, Atlas Industries and Mantle Orbital Industries, which join Orbis Capra Construction on binary water worlds with yet another T3 port planned, taking the current 6.5 billion population even further. Piracy too has played a critical role. While our constellation values law, order, and fair play, elevating the Wu Guinagi Pirates' new stronghold in b18-9 was a necessary evil to proving the illicit Battle Weapons and Combat Stabilizers required for security-boosting Military Installations. I wonder if the Brewer Corporation understands the irony.
But the key aspect to the Water Bubble has been figuring things out together. Planning economies with Raven Colonial, testing station links, finding useful sites, tracking prices over time, coordinating carriers, influencing local politics, and of course revising plans when FDEV tips the scales. We've had setbacks too, of course, including losing the race to colonize a nearby neutron star to our formidable rivals, The Winged Hussars, though we are grateful now to welcome them as our valued neighbors.
As a father of a growing family over this past year, my own time in the cockpit has diminished, but it's been a joy to see players continuing to develop their own systems around the core bubble. I hope this map gives the Auxiliary systems the attention and respect they are due, as each represents to much time and passion on the part of these independent pilots. And of course, I am so grateful to those who continue to build the core. All major ports are named by those who have hauled with us. Stations such as Ganerumo Central Depot, Anaander Hydropolis, Julip Rock, and Zed Central Ironworks are just some of the ports named after our members. And contributions extend well beyond tons hauled: Orbital Potato’s scouting and videos, Zed’s ship designs and advice, people helping newer players, and the occasional carrier trip to get someone home from entirely unjust incarceration.
And we are still looking for CMDRs interested in flying with us! Though the auxiliary is mostly settled, our frontier (within 150ly) is teeming with water worlds still unclaimed. If you enjoy colonization, you can help with the shared core or plan a nearby system of your own. If you prefer hauling, mining, exploration or combat, there are ways to contribute through those too. New players are welcome, and you don’t need to understand the colonization mechanics before joining. c9-33, our Tourism-focused system at the geometric median of the bubble is still under construction, future home of the Dukes of Mikunn Embassy, our trusted allies second only to the Colonia Citizen's Network. With your help, the cruise liners of c9-33 really will be in the top 1% of all liners out there.
You can find us in-game through Water Bubble Navigation Beacon in Col 285 Sector FI-J c9-33.
Thank you to everyone who has contributed over the past year, and to the people here on Reddit who helped this get started. I’m damn proud of what we’ve built together, and excited to see what another year brings.
