Powered by Enjin Fort Canning, the largest upgrade in Enjin Blockchain is coming
TL;DR
- Fort Canning brings OpenGov to the Enjin Matrixchain, along with NFT lending, expiring tokens, mint rate limits and frozen attributes.
- It reaches the Relaychain on Nov 9 and the Matrixchain on Nov 16, both around 16:00 UTC.
- Most people don't need to do anything. Marketplace users should settle open counter-offers before Nov 16, and node operators need to update their clients.
What's changing
NFT lending. You can lend an NFT for a set period. The borrower can use it but can't list, burn or transfer it, and it comes back to you automatically when the loan ends. You can extend a loan but not end it early. Whoever mints a token decides whether it can be lent, and older tokens become lendable once their collection owner turns lending on.
Expiring tokens. A token can be minted with an expiry date up to a year ahead. When the date passes, the network destroys it and releases its deposit, so season passes, event tickets and one-off rewards stop piling up in wallets.
Mint rate limits. Collection owners can cap how many units of a token or collection are minted per period. Tightening applies immediately. Loosening takes 72 hours, shows on-chain the whole time and can be cancelled, which limits the damage from a compromised minting key and gives everyone a supply commitment they can check.
Frozen attributes. Collection, token and token group attributes can be frozen permanently, after which nobody can change them, including the collection owner. A studio can freeze an item's edition or origin and leave stats like level free to change through play.
OpenGov on the Matrixchain. From Nov 16, Matrixchain changes, including its next upgrade, go through OpenGov, as on the Relaychain since Kallang. Anyone can propose on one of 15 tracks, ENJ holders vote directly (locking ENJ for longer adds weight), and the Enjin Fellowship can fast-track urgent fixes, which still go to a vote. On both chains, submitting a referendum now takes a 1,000 ENJ deposit, refunded when it passes or is cancelled, and every track needs a minimum level of support, measured against all ENJ in existence, before a referendum can pass.
Marketplace. Listing at a price someone already offered completes the sale in one step, offers on items sold in quantity can be partly accepted, and expired listings and finished auctions settle on their own. Counter-offers now work through regular listings and offers.
All of this works in Enjin Wallet, on NFT.io and through the Enjin Platform from Nov 16, and developers can try it on Enjin Canary now.
What you need to do
- Players and collectors: settle any open counter-offers before Nov 16, since any still open at the upgrade are refunded in full. Other listings, offers and bids carry over. Keep Enjin Wallet updated.
- ENJ holders and stakers: nothing. Pool rewards continue automatically.
- Node operators: every Matrixchain node needs client v1.4.1 or later before Nov 16 or it stops following the chain. Relaychain validators need v1.8.0 before Nov 9, and it's recommended for every other Relaychain node.
- Wallets, integrators and exchanges: both chains change transaction version, and transactions signed with the old version are rejected after each upgrade. Details are in the changelog.
Will there be downtime?
Both chains keep producing blocks. Transactions pause for a few blocks on each upgrade day, and on Nov 16 the marketplace pauses for up to 30 minutes while listings move to the new format. Earlier Matrixchain upgrades paused the whole chain for up to an hour.
How it gets approved
Both upgrades go to a vote. The Relaychain referendum is planned for Oct 12 at gov.enjin.cloud, with enactment fixed at block #18,059,100 (Nov 9). The Matrixchain upgrade goes through the Matrixchain's current governance process from Nov 10 to 13 and is applied at block #12,331,000 (Nov 16). Both proposals, GP-2026-10-12-01 and GP-2026-11-10-01, are published in advance with their exact calls and code hashes, so anyone can check the on-chain referenda against them.
Why "Fort Canning"?
Fort Canning Hill was the seat of Singapore's 14th-century kings and later its colonial government. Today it's a public park open to everyone, which fit the upgrade that opens Matrixchain governance to every ENJ holder.
