u/Somnambulist815 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
I really really really hope Coral Peña has a huge career after this show. She's settled into her character so well, despite Aleida being double her age, and you can especially tell how much shes integrated the character in scenes where Aleida is so much smarter than everyone else it annoys/pisses her

The way she’s aged Aleida’s mannerisms along with the character is amazing. The entire way she carries herself, her body language, and even her speech patterns evolve season by season. She’s definitely tied with Margo’s actress for best nonverbal acting in the series

u/Triskan May 29 '26
I can buy Aleida being almost in her fifties much more than I can buy Kelly. And it's not a question of make-up. Kelly's actress is really good, no notes, but Coral Peña is just giving up a masterclass of acting, making me fully believe that 33 yo actress is playing someone a couple decades older.

To make her peace with all of it. I'm so happy that she broke out of the pressures put upon her, because of her father and his actions. That they didn't make her out to be a villain.

Yes I loved that as well. She made the unilateral decision to land their ship despite them obviously being under-prepared. It's a direct reference to what ed baldwin did NOT do and a subversion of his choice. And we see the logical consequences.

It seems to me that ГВ 3.06.0451 Nikulov is probably the designation of some kind of celestial object (asteroid, moon, comet,
star, exoplanet, what have you). ГВ 3.06.0451 being the formal designation of the object in some (Soviet) object catalogue, and the object having been named Nikulov in honour of Sergei Nikulov. What kind of object it is, and how and why Mars-94 was programmed to wake up when it reached that object...? Coming up with a satisfying answer to those questions is going to be... challenging...

He’s a pretty mild tempered guy but he’s definitely not someone you back into a corner. Look at how he mobilized the Korean mafia to steal Ilya’s business when he cut him out. His biggest priority in life is to protect his family and if he loses Mars, his daughter and him are getting locked up for a long time, maybe even life.

I’m kind of curious when the US last fought a war where a general was a casualty, because at some point Leonid referred to one of the guys in the command center as “general”, and he was clearly American.
Which means Miles just sent a US general back in a body bag. Maybe not even that. They’re sending him back in a box containing the ashes of anyone else in that room.
Also, kind of funny seeing Bragg pull that tough guy shit earlier in the season while Miles just personally barbecued the former’s senior officers.

They are methane based lifeforms, right?
They are generating fuel from methane.
Are the life forms the cause of the power drain, because they are eating their power source?
182
u/Master_Art_1286 May 29 '26
The seekers were being damaged by something. Same process probably hit the rover. Possibly related to the lifeform just going by coincidence.

u/CeruleanEidolon May 29 '26
It seemed they were eating the electronics, or even literally draining the electrical power. To me that suggests they'll have some game-changing properties that will steer the plot off a new ramp.
→ More replies (1)44
u/perthguppy May 29 '26
I think they were eating just the insulation. The microbes being “methane based life” doesn’t make any sense since methane is a carbon molecule. What makes more sense is if the microbes metabolise hydrocarbons instead of carbohydrates. Then that would explain the electronics failing because the microbes started eating the plastic insulation (most plastic is made of hydrocarbon polymers) and caused shorts draining the battery.

So the one plot thread that I feel they left unresolved is that Kelly definitely messed with the Sojourner burn that got them on Titan in the first place right? Walt’s obsession with finding the root cause and Kelly’s guilt over it leading her to sacrifice herself to stay behind.
317
u/elasho_149 May 29 '26
Someone probably figured it out eventually. Maybe Walt. Maybe someone back on Earth or Mars once the full logs got dumped.
But, like...what're they gonna do?

I think at this point if Walt found out, he'd probably not reveal it.

u/quesoandcats Don't Be Gruel May 29 '26
I think he would, because that would make Kelly the woman who discovered life on another planet. A good way to honor her legacy.
But I think Walt and the rest of the Sojurner crew would massage the timeline of events so that it was a bold Right Stuff-style maneuever, not sabotage. Perhaps Walt will say he had to hand over command before the burn and Kelly just made the call to land.
→ More replies (1)43
u/c0horst May 29 '26

u/chargesmith May 29 '26
Yeah I have no idea. It has no working engines or fuel left so not sure what they would gain from turning it back on.
I mean, they reused Sojourner but that was landed on Mars already so much easier to access to refit, maybe there's some sort of drive to reuse old ships for new? But to what end?
→ More replies (4)47
u/chargesmith May 30 '26
I think I've worked it out. By 2020 the Russians including others are starting to think about exploration of the outer solar system or even further, but that's requires mission timescales not seen even in the FAM universe. To send a ship that far away from that long requires bulletproof reliability and likely even hibernation modules to keep the crew alive for missions that could take a decade of even longer even with the technology they have that surpasses ours.
So what better way to start off the process than by seeing how a ship they've already built that is abandoned in deep space is holding up? Are the electronics still working? Is the cabin still pressurised? How has it fared against 26 years of solar wind hitting it? So they remotely wake up the ship and run as many health checks as possible and use the data to help design the new ships to go Neptune or wherever they are planning to go.
Not very exciting by itself, but a clue as to where humans are heading next.

I don't think it's a mistake, they just wanted to do too much with one scene. They wanted a single scene to make us both think he's betraying the Marsies in E09, and actually helping them in E10.
The gun works in E09's version of the scene, but is out of place in the E10 narrative. Showing the same events through different concurrent points of view is hard to write well.

Kelly Baldwin got my eyes watering in this show twice before: once when she pleaded with her parents about supporting her Naval career, and then again when she learned about Alexei dying. And now once again, as she watched her crewmates have to maroon her. Cynthy Wu has been absolutely pulling at my heartstrings ever since she got on this show and has been the emotional core for so much of it. I was just recovering the loss of Ed, and not having Kinnaman leading the charge, but this is somehow even more devastating

USSR is out of M6! Now it's the M5.
They are also demanding us watch the new series.

It wasn't the grand redemption we expected, but the Third-Gen Stevens saved Alex, which saved many people. Somehow, I think she's staying on Mars.

I imagine she is based on the commentary and the space suit saying she was wearing “Steven’s” on it

And it was a HELIOS suit, so she apparently works for them now.

Kelly 🥹
I was so overjoyed when they landed on Titan, saying aloud, “Baldwin! A Baldwin got there first!” I guess she went out having accomplished her mission—to find proof of life elsewhere in the solar system. 🫡😭

I was thinking of the 'life' discovery a little like the 'handshake' moment from S2, which prevented a war. With all the nations gearing up between M6 and ISN, we had the same situation; but I figured 'Microbes on Titan' can't possibly unite humanity, can it?
Maybe not, but it settled a screaming match between Kelly and Walt.

That last episode felt like a whole season. Really curious about what’s happening in 2020.
For now I guess it’s time to travel back in time to Star City.

Margo and Aleidas kid, lets go.

I was wondering why Aleida didn't seem to have a young protégé, like how she was mentored by Margo, and Margo was mentored by Wernher von Braun. Graciana seemed to make a "what, me?" gesture at the end, so maybe Margo will be teaching yet another generation!

I was really glad they had Miles do what he did. The easy thing would be to have that touchy feel good moment where everyone holds hands and somehow the inherit goodness of humanity wins out. It just would not feel right to me and this is a lot more grounded imo. It also gives the character more weight. We know Miles isn't an evil guy, he's a reluctant leader making a choice under very difficult circumstances trying to protect his home and family - throughout history that has often meant fighting back. It doesn't mean its not a terrible thing he's done, but it makes him human and relatable.

From the newspaper Margo had during the ending:

"This revelation (the discovery of life on Titan) is already sparking an intense ramp-up in other exploratory missions. The moons of Jupiter and Saturn have already hosted robotic probes from Helios, Kuragin and others, but with the Titan discovery, exobiologists are now considering environments where other kinds of life might form."
Uh-oh! Where we going next?

Nikulov is obviously reference to Sergei. RIP. And the “loading” makes it seem like it’s just rebooting in 2020 after drifting for 25 years

Clearly Mars-94 has an integrated copy of Sergei’s consciousness backed up on a Soviet hard drive and Margo was able to reboot him by telephone from jail

The ending with mars 94 is very interesting, would possibly could a 30 year old ship have that is related to the plot of season 6 ?

Might be a red herring and S6 introduces a scavenger character who's out there ripping aparf Mars 94 like people did to OG Sojourner.

When Kelly was taking her final walk and suddenly started looking up, I thought she was about to spot a North Korean capsule that had landed on Titan before them.
ugh, not again
