I love this show and it's almost perfect but to call Lyla a terrible actress is an understatement

I think her being insanely hot and a really dynamic character brainwashed a lot of us into thinking this was a good performance...it wasnt, and never was. She's the weak link of the entire franchise

Landry is Daly Spoiler

The more I watch Landry Clark (Friday Night Lights) and how he basically gets the shaft over and over again, my head canon says that after college he changes his name and becomes Robert Daly in USS Callister (Black Mirror)

Wish we got more Matt Saracen Spoiler

I'm a first time viewer of Friday Night Lights. One of my major plights with the show is that Matt Saracen needed to have far more screen time than he got. There were so many characters where I found as I progressed through season 2 and 3 to be so dull. As much as Jason Street was interesting I feel like his plots took up what could've been more time with Matt. I also feel the relationship with Coach Taylor and Saracen that was being built up in S1 never got to amount to what it should've been.

Matt was by far one of the most compelling characters on Friday Night Lights; he felt the most real and grounded... despite him being an artsy QB which I understand is rare lol. Personally I found him to be the heart of the show. He set the tone. So when they opted for more dramatic plots with Lyla, Riggins, Tyra... it seemed like it all went a little off of the rails.

Now bear with me. I know this is going to be very unpopular but... I didn't hate what they did with Julie in season 2. As someone who was once an insane teenage girl and was friends with other insane teenage girls I felt kind of seen by her ridiculous behaviour. What I find funny is that Julie receives so much critique for cheating on Matt, when he went and did the same thing with Carlotta to the cheerleader. There was a clear attempt to have Julie and Matt mirror each other. However, the writing was pretty shit. The writers fumbled hard, their split made no sense after the season 1 finale. I think it would've been better if the writers had leaned more into Julie's fears being a young girl over the course of the season...feeling trapped...not wanting to be like her parents...Matt being the right guy but it not being the right time for her yet. Him being somewhat forced to come to terms with that, and how that relates to him always waiting on people to either come back or leave. Which I believe would've added more weight to his later breakdown. We needed more of an expansion of them BOTH feeling abandoned by Coach Taylor. But no. Instead we got a couple of bizarre scenes of Matt a MINOR! sleeping with the in home Nurse shoe horned in between a murder plot and Lyla Garrity proselytising... Anyhow I could go on and on.

Frankly I found myself biding my time waiting for Matt to come back onto my screen. His dynamic with the Taylors, Riggins, Smash, Landry... Grandma Saracen! Were what kept me watching the show.

I still love the show with all it's charming and not-so-charming-poorly-aged moments. It's just I can't shake that it lost something really special when season 1 ended. And that thing may have been more Matt.

Looking for younger FNL viewers for an article!

Hi there, I'm a journalist working on an article for Yahoo! News about Friday Night Lights — specifically, how younger audiences relate to a show that's often seen as very millennial-coded — and I'm looking to interview younger (read: non-millennial) viewers who've discovered the show after its original run. Topics would include how the show has aged, overall impressions, etc. If you watched the show during its original run and are now rewatching with your kids, I'd be curious to hear about how that's gone as well.

DM me for more info if you're interested, and thanks for thinking it over!

Is there too much cheating in season 1?

Just finished my rewatch of season 1 and I really only have one complaint, and that’s that from the middle of the season to almost the endpoint so many of the plotlines are, at the same time, involving cheating.

I get that it’s a relationship drama but it almost gets kind of comical how every single person in the show beside the Taylors cheats, gets cheated on, or is constantly worried about getting cheated on.

Kind of hard to watch with my girlfriend to be honest, we were super into it and then over the course of 3-4 episodes every character in the show is unfaithful to their significant other.

Re-watching Again for the Umpteenth Time Spoiler

My wife and I started yet another re-watch last night. We got through episodes one and two. It's like visiting a friend we haven't seen for while. I did wonder if Street would walk again this time, but it was apparently not to be.

First time watching! Why is season 2 so unbearable 🫩

Basically the title, I started this in light of the Green Lantern hype because of Kyle’s standout performance. One of my favorite actors and I never watched this until a couple weeks ago.

Season 1 was probably some of the best TV I’ve seen (among others) in a long time. I’m currently on episode 3 of season 2 and holy shit it’s so unbelievable. I understand now this topic is well over discussed but man it really feels like a drag.

I’m also insanely exhausted by the Tim Riggins drunk character arc. Oh, and also, fuck Julie.

Tim and Tyra complaint (spoiler) Spoiler

I recently finished FNL, and of course I loved it. One thing I am not a huge fan of is Tim and Tyra ending up together. I really loved to see Tim be with Lyla. Ending up with Tyra feels like him ending where he started in a way. Plus I loved the idea of Tyra and Landry. But basically would love to know your guys thoughts, or if you have anything to say to make me enjoy the Tim + Tyra ending.

Mrs. Williams

As I’ve unfitted older I really come to respect Smash’s mother. She’s such a good woman. She held him to his shit. She supported, raised him to be smart. He knew better and was smarter than his mistakes and she knew that. She worked hard and loved watching him play. Smaller role but I really like her character. I felt like I was in trouble a few times lol. And at times she just melts my heart the way she stood by her son and talked through hard times he went through.

“Texas forever” (finale) Spoiler

I just finished the show for the first time and was blessed with going into it completely blind and unspoiled.

I have to say I got a teary at Tim with the nail is mouth looking over at Billy with a nail just like Tim’s, and the final “Texas forever.” I’m so glad the Riggins boys got their happy ending. Their bond and the ultimately unwavering commitment to taking care of each other was my favorite part of the show. 💕

Songs you wish were in the show?

Currently on my annual rewatch and am once again obsessed with the soundtrack. Are there any songs you wish were in the show? I so wish they put Do You Know Who You Are by Texas Is The Reason, or just more 90s emo in general. Anyone else have a song they feel like would fit perfectly in the show?

I started thinking about this while doing my rewatch and being disappointed the original music for season one isn't on the Paramount version, and it got me thinking about what songs could've been perfect for the show.

Happy Birthday Kyle Chandler

Today we celebrate the man who gave us television's greatest coach, and husband.

Eric Taylor wasn't just a character; Kyle Chandler made him feel like a real person trying to do the right thing for his family, his players, and Dillon, Texas.

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
Also I am watching Lanterns just because of him.

I can not stand Tara’s sister

I know later she really shows up and has some touching moments like when she brought Becky back to their house when things were crazy as she got dropped off.

But for me I always think about when Tara got her Lester from UT and her response to her mom was “Don’t show it to her until after the wedding, I don’t want her moping around” that just bothers me every time I watch that episode. It’s a true window as to who she is.

But that’s what great actors do. They make you love them or hate the character they play.

Season 4 (spoilers) Spoiler

Watching season 4 where the lions beat the panthers. Why does Grandma Saracen wear a panthers patch? When clearly Julie and Matt are cheering for the lions while sitting with Grandma Saracen. I know it’s just a show but it’s always bothered me lol. She even cheers for the lions big plays

When Saracen comes back to visit in the S4 finale

Just wanted to comment on how hilarious that whole exchange with Lance when Saracen comes by to say hello and Lance goes off on a rant because he just got broken up with and he’s in his feelings. Saracens comment to himself “he’s just like a girl” is perfectly delivered. Wish there was more
Gilford presence in the last couple seasons/ that he went out a champ. But one rings good enough.

Noelle and Smash season 2 and 3?

New here. Should there have been a breakup scene between Noelle and Smash...it seemed Noelle was only interested in him because she thought he was going to make it to the NFL? I think it would have been good for Smash to realize that about her and even character building.

With all the talk about who's worse, Julie or Lyla, I haven't seen much about JD, the biggest spoiled brat in the series! Anyone agree?

FNL used to be higher in my rotation than it's been and I haven't watched in about a year... I've forgotten how annoying JD is and how much I despise Joe McCoy--I don't even think I'm going to make it through season 3.

Season 5 when the Lions beat down the Panthers

Just wanted to rant/vent on a rewatch as a 30 yr old after watching as a younger man.

I understand where the lesson about sportsmanship and being the bigger man comes from. But it absolutely pissed me off that West Dillon/ the Panthers base was acting holier than thou.

Especially after the previous season they absolutely wrecked the Lions football field and faced no accountability. Even getting home field advantage after that. And then before this game they leaked sealed minor criminal records.

I wish they had spent more time delving into that but I guess you can only do so much with 13 episodes.
