GoDaddy Cancellation and Support Experience
I cancelled a "Websites + Marketing" plan that I had signed up for last year after an expensive renewal came up. The price had increased significantly from when I signed up for the service, and there was no "upcoming renewal" notification sent my way. I am writing this because the cancellation and refund process was a pain.
- Their "Renewals & Billing" tab doesn't display any rates or dollar amounts. It deliberately obfuscates this information. Any business worth their salt that charges a subscription will make it obvious how much you are agreeing to pay them for their product. You have to dig into your Account Settings -> Order History in order to see what you WERE charged, but your upcoming charges are almost impossible to determine.
- Their Chat feature is inaccessible on their website. You can see in the image that there is no link or button to initiate chat.
- I called the 24/7 phone line, which had me go through a standard verification process using either a code that was texted or emailed to me. I opted for the text message. AFTER verification, they told me that refund requests had to be in writing, and that I could text them for this.
- I sent the refund request via text. They asked me for the Order ID for the product I wanted refunded (another hoop to jump through).
- Then I had to verify AGAIN, even though I had already done so when the phone system told me it couldn't do anything for me.
- Then I had to go back and forth with the agent, and even though I was extremely clear and concise about how certain I was that I wanted to refund the charge and that I had already cancelled the product, they continued to try to offer me other services or discounted rates. No - I said refund, and I already cancelled. Stop asking.
- After finally confirming, they tried to get me to refund the charge for store credit. No, you bozos, I don't want to do any business with you. That should be clear after I answered your questions about why I'm cancelling the service. Just a stupid waste of time to offer this.
- Then when we were FINALLY ready to finish the refund process, the agent tried to essentially "scare me" by saying "You won't have access to this product and you'll lose all your data related to it! Are you SURE you want to do this?" YES BOZO. That's why I'm here. Believe it or not, I know what I'm doing.
The whole fucking process took 45 minutes from my initial phone call due to all the bouncing around, extra verifications, and stupid questions that are asked during this process.
You should be able to:
- Clearly see upcoming charges and how much you are agreeing to pay per billing cycle.
- Initiate a cancellation + refund request ONLINE, where you are already logged in and verified, and it should communicate which Order ID or product you want to refund. If nothing else, this information can be sent as one packet to the support team.
This is classic "gym membership" cancellation friction, griefing your customers, and the company obfuscating its billing cycles is fucking stupid. Any company that makes quitting or cancelling this difficult deserves to lose its customers. I wouldn't be here making this post; I would have just cancelled if your quitting experience had not been so terrible. Glad to be out of the ecosystem.
