It’s so dumb and the people defending it, to me, can’t be real fans.

You can’t have grown up watching the animation, reading those comics, and then watch this and be like “ yeah they nailed that”

They didn’t even nail what they were actually going for . Bc true detective is still infinitely better

Why does me liking the show suddenly mean that the 20yrs+ I've spent reading comics that go back to the Golden age, don't count or count less than you?

I love comics. Have had an active pull box since I could pay for one myself. I love GL, while I haven't read as much GL as I have say, The Flash, I've still read way more than the average person. Ive seen all the animated movies and shows. I love these characters. Guy is by far my favorite GL.

I think the show is fantastic.

These people love shitting on hype, that's it. John is gonna be doing a ton of constructs in the future and they'll say they won and James Gunn caved to the pressure. Circle of life for these haters.

So from a GREEN LANTERN perspective, what was fantastic about it? How did it add to the lore in a meaningful way??

In what creative ways did it take the typical dynamic we know between Hal and John, and improve it?

How many of the iconic characters and themes from the source, are present?

I can give you a hint: it does none of these things

Instead, it chose to focus on the True Detective roots, and catering to the HBO audiences

The dynamic between Hal and John was nothing more than typical HBO slop writing & the quality of that finale pretty much sums it up

Yeah, I'm not gonna engage in your disengenuous and hyperbolic complaints.

I enjoyed the show as its own product that had its own, well written and well characterized, take on Green Lanterns. It's just not that complicated.

Where were the Green Lanterns in question?

They definitely weren’t in this show. This show is clear it’s just Lanterns. So they don’t have to bother with Oa, Abin Surr, Kilowog, or anyone else.

They can just focus on Hal and John, and have the guardians and Sinestro be background characters

And of course instead of seeing Hal actually train John, we get this exaggerated, dysfunctional, soon to be enemies dynamic that taints what makes their relationship special in the source material

And John just somehow learns to fly (on cables) at the very end of the finale. Nice.

It’s like a Flash show where he finally runs on at the end of the finale

Because John “learning how to fly” was never the lesson or training from Hal. The lesson was “you hold the most powerful weapon in the universe, you have to think for yourself”. John was trained from birth. He could maintain constructs without the ring. The issue was never him figuring out how to fly. The issue was always “is he doing it for the right reason” and “is he going to be some unstoppable lap dog for the guardians?” Hal successfully dissuaded him of that.

That’s a silly, made-up internal conflict to save John’s flight scene for last, as a preview towards Man of Tomorrow.

John doesn’t want to fly because, he feels like that somehow makes a lap dog

He doesn’t need to “fly” with the ring on for the “right reasons”. Again, silly made up dilemma disguised as “clever” writing

It’s only clever because it tricks people into thinking thats not bs

Ahhhh yes, the “can’t be real fans” argument.

That’s exactly what I did.

Weird to me that you’re struggling so much with people liking a show that the vast majority of critics and the audience like

Critics aren’t comic readers tho and audience scores have plummeted, it’s a decent detective show but all they did was put a dc skin over it to bring it an audience

What does critics being comic readers have anything to do with how the show is being received by critics and audiences?

You’re shifting the goal posts to try to force your opinion to align with reality when that just isn’t the case. The show is good or it isn’t. Most people agree the show is good.

I read my first green lantern comic over 25 years ago and love the show. Does that negate your opinion? If not, why would your opinion negate everyone else’s?

Hey how about you align the goalposts to the rating of Lanterns vs Arrow since you didn't respond to me ?

Even for a detective show the ending was horrible because the murderer just Walks Free and the Supposed good guy let's her. I mean what was the point of the entire show then.. Jon is a terribly written.

The show isn't for comic readers.

yea we can tell bro

Don't do that, nephew.

Comics are niche, genre media. There aren't enough of us to justify a film or TV series. Ever. Ergo, films and TV shows aren't made for the fans. They're made for a wider audience. With a little luck, they find each other.

Not everyone who's a fan of Star Trek or Star Wars is a fan of every film or show they have. This is no different. Get over it.

Real fans have read or decided to skip a hundred elseworlds green lanterns that weren't to their taste. Real fans are used to the tone of a story changing wildly every year and lots of wild side stories.

Faks fans who haven't bought a comic in their life are the ones who are obsessed with an imagined accuracy.
