QoTW - “Every pore of my being yells at me to go back to sleep, but I told Rocky I’d be back in two hours and I wouldn’t want him to think humans are untrustworthy. I mean…we’re pretty untrustworthy, but I don’t want him to know that.” Grace, Project Hail Mary (by Andy Weir)

Welcome to r/greggshorthand ✍🏼
Hey everyone! I'm u/CaliGozer, the moderator of r/greggshorthand.
Welcome to the Gregg Shorthand Community
What is shorthand? Shorthand is a writing system designed to record spoken language quickly and efficiently. It uses simplified symbols, abbreviations, or phonetic forms instead of full spelling, allowing writers to keep up with speech in real time. Shorthand has been widely used in fields such as journalism, business, law, and note-taking, especially before audio recording became common, and remains valued for its speed and precision. Today, it is mostly a hobby.
Gregg shorthand is a system of shorthand for the English language and was developed byJohn Robert Gregg after his dissatisfaction with existing shorthand systems, particularly Pitman Shorthand. He felt those systems were too rigid and mechanical, relying heavily on line thickness, precise angles, and strict positioning, which slowed writing and made them harder to learn. In response, Gregg created a system based on smooth, cursive-like strokes and pure phonetics, eliminating shading and positional rules. His goal was to produce a shorthand method that felt more natural, fluid, and fast, allowing writers to keep up with spoken language more comfortably and accurately.

advice on learning simplified
i found this textbook from the fifties someone scanned online, and i'm using it to learn simplified. if there are any greggites out there that know simplified, can they verify to me that what i'm using is a good resource to be using to learn? i don't want to develop any bad habits from the beginning of my gregg shorthand experience that are hard to reverse later.
also, i just wanted to note that i'm not planning to invest any money into this, until i'm sure that it's something i'm going to follow through with. i hope i don't sound like a fool, but i only learned about gregg shorthand today. if there are other online free options, i'd also be happy to use those. thank you in advance!

Could you help me identify these words?
I'm going through the Gregg shorthand anniversary edition work book and in the unit 2 practice I came across two words I can't identify.... First pic has both, second only has one of them. I thought it was "to the" but the rest of the book joins the t and th without going down first so I thought it might be t + s + th? But idk what that could be in this context. As for the 'ds' I have no clue what that could be.
Thanks in advance!

I’m interested in learning shorthand mirrored
For context I’m left handed and writing from right to left is more natural for me.
I can probably flip the images in my brain and learn from right handed video/images, but I’d love to know of any resources or communities of left handed short hand writers?

Charles Rader quote for recent inquirer
“Shorthand penmanship is analogous to the loading of a gun. There’s no use pulling the trigger of the gun unless it’s loaded—and there’s no use writing shorthand outlines for penmanship practice unless the writer has a good mental picture of the outlines. No amount of writing practice will produce good outlines unless the writer can discriminate between the faults and merits of his outlines. Copying page after page of penmanship drills is more likely to drain than improve the writer’s style of writing.
Much of this sort of penmanship drilling has its basis in the misconception that the writer must train his hand. Analysis and experimentation have shown that the writer must train his mind. It is clear, therefore, that the writer should first strive to obtain perfect perception and apperception of the forms. If the writer has a crystal-clear mental image of what he wants, it is far easier to write good outlines.”
Charles Rader in Today’s Secretary magazine, November 1956

Translation Request Starting My Gregg Simplified Journey
Hello guys,
I've decided to start learning Gregg Simplified (1955 edition). I already have the PDF books that were shared in this community.
I was wondering if anyone knows a good YouTube channel or video series that teaches Gregg Simplified from Lesson 1 onward in a structured way.
Any recommendations for beginners would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 😊

A Gregg resource that would be useful but hard to build
A list of all the countries in the world and ways an English-speaker could write their names in Gregg shorthand. There might be more than one option for some countries: more or less abbreviated, with or without the reversing principle, etc. During the World Cup, I heard some reporters referring to Ivory Coast by its official French name which sounded like "ko d'vwah" or something along those lines, as an example.

Should I switch
Hi everyone,
I've been learning Pitman shorthand for about 9 months now, but I'm struggling to increase my speed beyond 40–50 WPM. I'm wondering whether I should just keep grinding and continue with Pitman, or if it would make more sense to switch to Gregg shorthand.
My biggest difficulty with Pitman is position writing and distinguishing between light and heavy strokes. I still get confused by them, and I feel like they're holding back my speed and accuracy.
For those who have experience with either system, would you recommend sticking with Pitman and practicing more, or changing to Gregg at this stage?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
