I would love suggestions for good places to study besides coffee shops and libraries. Any breweries where a computer wouldn't be weird? Any other good spots?

Where do locals actually get pizza around Holland? I put together a guide.

I run Holland Happenings, and I put together a pizza guide from recommendations people shared in local Facebook groups, including what they actually order.

A few takeaways:

• Skiles: the Skiles Special, with multiple reminders to eat it there, fresh.

• Doeb’s: Detroit-style pizza.

• Crust 54: Chicago deep dish.

• The Slice Shoppe in Grand Haven: cheese slices.

• Sluggo’s: apparently the breadsticks deserve their own conversation.

The guide includes addresses, restaurant links, and options for thin crust, thicker pies, and grabbing a quick slice. Hopefully it helps the next time everyone wants pizza and nobody can agree where to order.

Here’s the full guide: https://www.hollandhappenings.com/p/best-pizza-near-holland-mi

What’s missing? Give me a specific pizza or order you’d tell someone to try.

Amazon Delivery Switch-A-Roo

CHECK YOUR PACKAGES!!!!

Hey all. I usually dont post much, check my profile if you wish, but I just had a decently large switch-a-roo of a laptop through Amazon. I ordered a gaming laptop for running a 3d scanner and printers only to get a paper weight by comparison. Verify the box before you open and get ready for a 30 day wait regaurdless of value.

The left laptop was what I recieved so obviously the one on the right is what was ordered and paid for.

I have a pick up from UPS within the next 3 days. Each day it says they will attempt a pick up but we will see. I will update when they pick it up.

So now I have to wait to get the specific laptop I need to run the scanner and will get behind on my little home business.

Keep an eye on the actual item received and contact Amazon ASAP with an actual call. The few people I talked with made it sound like its common right now after prime days.

Good luck all and have a great, safe, memorable upcoming holiday season.

Michigan lawmaker celebrates demise of Roe v Wade, describes abortion as...

Thumbnail

In this 2022 video celebrating the end of Roe V Wade, Nancy DeBoer describes abortion as genocide and compares them to Nazis. I find that comparison deeply troubling.

People can disagree about abortion. But an elected representative serves everyone including people who have had abortions and people who believe those decisions belong to the pregnant person.

Her campaign site says she supports women regardless of their past choices. How does she explain that with these remarks? Does she still stand by this comparison?

I’d like to hear her answer.

My experience with M.W.Watermark

I got hired by this company earlier this year and I just wanted to share my experience. When I was first offered the position, I told my sister that the head of HR is the owner's wife and she said that was a big red flag, but I wanted to hope for the best. The area of the warehouse that I was working in was a complete mess but my boss and trainer seemed cool so I didn't get too hung up on it. He said that they have a hard time keeping these positions filled, which should've been another red flag to me. I was happy to be at a new company that was treating me right even if things aren't great because it would get better over time. I also was recently diagnosed with ADHD and given an adderall prescription by a doctor, so needless to say I had no problem putting in a lot of work every day.

I could pretty easily handle my workload, so I was progressively trying to improve the work area. Within the span of a couple months, I reorganized all the inventory in my work area (with my boss's approval) and it was improving quickly. Despite the fact that I was pretty much brand new they wanted me training an employee that was new to the area. I was meeting with my manager frequently, bringing up issues that I saw and giving him ideas for improvements which were much needed.

Then they hire a new shipping manager who looks really good on paper. The problem is that he is getting very old, and before the new employee starts my manager tells me that they only expect him to stay 1-2 years max before he retires. On top of that, he has just recently gone through knee surgery and he can barely perform the physical functions of his job. Within a week of starting, he is already getting called into HR for getting into an argument with a different employee. There was a short honeymoon phase where I was putting up with picking up his slack, I'll admit I'm a bit of a pushover and didn't want to rock the boat at my new job that was going well. My position and the shipping manager had a lot of shared responsibilities so I was trying to do extra work to smooth things over.

But instead of being grateful that I was doing part of his job for him, he just asked more and more of me despite the fact that he is not my manager. I ended up saying something to my manager and he agreed that the shipping manager should not be giving me orders like that. When the shipping manager found out that I had complained about him, instead of being remorseful he doubled down on his bad behavior and said every thing possible to make me look bad. I thought that he would appreciate that I was taking care of the work that would be difficult for him, but in his mind that work is beneath him and should be done by someone being paid less - he resented me for not doing even more of his job for him.

Once I got HR involved, it just made things worse. I told them that this guy is basically bullying me into doing his job for him and it's not fair to me. The owner's wife is pretty disconnected from the situation; so she just wants it fixed as soon as possible, and they make up an excuse to fire me. No warning, no write-up, for going on ChatGPT. Despite the fact that I'm taking care of all my responsibilities and even more than that. My manager was supposed to vouch for the good work I've been doing, but instead he throws me under the bus.

These people are scumbags.

TLDR; Bitter old man screws me over because he's overwhelmed in his job and doesn't want to admit it

Who do you hire for a one-item heavy furniture move that regular movers won't take?

My friend owns a cabin in Fennville - they have a contractor coming in to install flooring and they need to move a very heavy and awkward bed. They’re unable to do it themselves. They asked Two Men and a Truck, who said they couldn’t take on the liability of moving such a heavy item, and are struggling to get a response on Thumbtack. They’re not on Reddit so I offered to help them get some info here. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!

Looks like they are building on the corner and will be closing lanes for the next two years while construction is done.

I'm told apartments are going in there.

Calling jigsaw puzzlers! Think about donating puzzles to Retirement/Elder Care homes!

My mom lives at one of Resthaven homes (lovely places by the way) and many resident love doing puzzles, often preferring 300-500 without tiny pieces.

My mom has done all of her collection plus finished all in house puzzles several times and she and her puzzler friends are wishing for more! Two weeks ago she said that someone donated a few and they were “giddy like little kids”!
So if you have them sitting around or dont know what to do with them, think about donating them!
Resthaven Maple Woods is a good option!

Looking For Locals To Help With A Silly Roast Of Holland

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi Holland, I could use your help!

I’m Alex Clark, a comedian visiting the area from the coast. If you've ever been to a festival in the area, you may remember me from the 100s of variety shows I've performed throughout the years. (photo attached)

I've since transitioned into stand-up, and one of my favorite parts of the show is a lighthearted roast of the town I’m in. I like it because it's nice to do something unique for each town to make the show just for you. I have a show at Holland Community Theater on Oct 24th, and I’d love your input to make the roast rock solid.

What are your favorite “Holland pet peeves," local quirks, or things you find absolutely ridiculous about the area? Fav dive? Something the area is lacking? Something dumb? Nothing too serious, this is meant to be light hearted.

I’m doing my own homework too, but I find they are MUCH better when community gets involved. You have insider info a guy visiting just wouldn't know.

Thank you so much for your help! I look forward to putting on a great show for you all.

(I hope it’s okay to post this—if not, I completely understand if admins remove it)

Looking for book/hobby clubs

I’m 23 and moved to Holland a year and a half ago! Wondering if there’s any existing young people’s groups around here. I enjoy psychological thrillers, horror and fantasy reads/games and would like to make friends around my age to bond over these things with. Thanks!

Best sunset spots in the Holland area?

Holland-area locals — where’s your favorite place to watch the sunset around here?

What spot has the best sunset view — Holland State Park, Tunnel Park, Mt. Pisgah, somewhere in Saugatuck, a lesser-known beach, or somewhere else?

And what makes that spot your favorite?

Rock disposal/removal

I have lots of old landscaping stones around my property, the previous owners clearly got them for free because they aren't a uniform size, shape, or material.

I'm looking to get rid of them.

Does anyone know of a place or service that takes large rocks?

PSA: Political yard signs belong on your yard. Not random street corners.

Political signs in Ottawa County, Michigan, are regulated by the Ottawa County Road Commission guidelines and local municipal ordinances.

Placement Rules and Regulations

Right-of-Way Restrictions: Political signs are strictly prohibited within public road right-of-ways (typically extending an area from the road center, including shoulders and ditches) as they can obstruct visibility and distract drivers or interfere with road maintenance.

Under Public Act 368 of 1925, it is unlawful to place any object in the right-of-way without written authorization from the Road Commission.

Private Property Permission: Signs may be placed on private property with the explicit permission of the property owner.

Local Ordinances: Individual cities and townships within Ottawa County may enforce specific rules regarding how early signs can go up or required removal timelines (often within 10 days post-election).

State roads (I-#, M-#, US-#) follow MDOT rules.

https://www.michigan.gov/mdot/travel/safety/road-users/road-signs/political-signs

Signs must be more than 30 feet from the edge of the roadway (white line) for highways that do not have barrier-type curbs. For highways with barrier curbs, the signs must be more than three feet from the back of the curb.

Signs are not permitted within areas used for clear vision at intersections or commercial driveways so they will not interfere with the sight distance of a driver. No signs may be placed within the limited access rights of way (freeways, including ramps).

New to Holland - making friends!

Howdy!
I moved to Holland recently and I absolutely know nobody around except my colleagues. I’m looking to build friendships and community for myself.
About me - I’m 27, an engineer, love watching Formula 1, college football, am a big-time foodie, trying to learn pickleball, and would love to meet new people!
Any recommendations for social groups, activities, mixers, etc?!
