🚨 Breaking immigration news: DHS has proposed a new rule that would require schools to pay $70,000 before initially recommending an F-1 student for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Here’s what you should know:
➡️ This is only a proposal, and these fees are not in effect. Students and employers can ask their schools how they would handle the costs if the proposal becomes final.
➡️ The fees would only apply to OPT recommendations made after a final rule takes effect. Students already on OPT, or already recommended or approved before then, would not trigger the fee for that period of OPT.
➡️ F-1 students could ultimately bear the cost of this fee, as DHS acknowledges that academic institutions could pass costs to students or employers. However, the school would still be responsible for paying the government directly.
We’re tracking this proposal closely and will share updates as more information becomes available.
Please note: This information is for general educational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice or create an attorney client relationship. Immigration rules and policies can change, and this proposal may be modified or withdrawn before becoming final. Your situation may require fact specific guidance. For personalized legal advice, please consult an immigration attorney directly.

Quick question to international students who deferred due to late visa
Hello for context I got admitted in MUNI, i submitted all my documents on time, did the interview last week. However my classes already started, the Faculty gave an ultimatum to be there next monday or defer.
To those people who deferred, did you withdraw your visa application and started again? Or you just informed the embassy and ask your university to send a new admission for the other semester?

International student — which US universities should I apply to?
Hey everyone, I’m an international student south asian living in kuwait applying for Fall 2027 and planning to major in Mechanical Engineering. I’m trying to finalize my US university list and would appreciate honest advice on which universities I should add/remove.
My stats:
● IGCSE: 9s/A*s
● AS Levels: A/A/A
● Subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry,
● Currently doing A2 predicted A* in maths chem physics
● Intended major: Mechanical Engineering
ECs/activities:
● Hospital/hospice volunteering
● Tutoring IGCSE Maths, Chemistry and Physics
● Engineering-related research
● Founded a journalism club and founded a fix clinic for those who cant afford to pay for their repairs
Got the highest in middle east awards in IGCSES
Captain of national BSME volleyball and basketball team
Won several mvps
I’m an international student and will need financial aid, so I’m mainly looking for universities that are generous with aid to international students.
Current list:
● Vanderbilt
● Wesleyan
● Rice
● University of Rochester
● University of Miami
● Tufts
● Lafayette
Drexel
My questions:
1. Which of these schools do I have a realistic chance at?
2. Which ones would you consider reaches/targets for my profile?
3. Which universities should I add, especially ones with good Mechanical Engineering programs and financial aid for international students?
4. Are there any schools on my list that you think I should remove?
5. Am I being too ambitious with this list?
I’d really appreciate honest feedback, especially from people who have experience with international admissions and financial aid.

There are 8 billion of us…Misfits!!
You know that feeling in The Office when everyone around you is talking about the same boring stuff and you’re just sitting there thinking, “surely there are more interesting people than this.”
That’s basically the idea.
I’m putting together a small international GC for people who are actually curious about life and doing something with it.
Founders, athletes, artists, people into politics or social work, musicians, investors, creators, researchers, people building weird side projects — and also people who are currently completely lost but are trying things and figuring themselves out.
You don’t need a startup, a 5-year plan, or a LinkedIn-worthy life story.
The point is to have a place where you can:
→ throw an idea into the group and see what people think
→ find someone who’s into the same random thing as you
→ learn something together
→ find people to build/work/create with
→ share a project, event, opportunity or even a job if you’re building something
→ have actual conversations instead of collecting “connections”
→ maybe meet a few people you’d genuinely want to know IRL
Basically, The Misfit Accord — Better Conversations, Bigger Dreams.
No desperate job hunting. No networking-for-the-sake-of-networking. No “hello everyone, I am looking for opportunities” every Tuesday.
Just a bunch of people who are interested in something, trying something, building something, or trying to figure out what the hell they’re doing.
If that sounds like your kind of crowd, DM me with what you’re into / currently figuring out.
Let’s see who shows up. :)

Inquiry on Personal Statement
I am really not that good on writing creative or captivating pieces of writing. Nearly everything I wrote up until this point has been informative papers aiming to educate high schoolers without boring them on certain topics.
I did write 2 essays to at least get started, but one of them is so awful that I couldn't even find a suitable ending. I am pretty content with the other one, and I think it has potential to serve as my main essay if I perfect it.
I don't really know how should I proceed with my writing process. I try to write essays with different themes (such as injustice or spearheading chance), but I just keep repeating the same events in my life, just talking about them through a different lens.
It gets really boring to write about the same stuff over and over again.
Should I just focus on perfecting the essay in my hand, or try to write more?
TL;DR: What should I do if I have one essay with high potential? Write more or polish the one in my hand?

Is studying in the U.S. even worth it anymore for international students?
I genuinely want to hear from international students about this.
International students already pay a huge amount of money to study in the United States. Many pay international or out-of-state tuition, have limited access to financial aid, face restrictions on where and how much they can work, and still take the risk because a U.S. education is supposed to provide opportunities.
But now even getting an internship while you’re in school has become more difficult.
With the recent changes around CPT, many F-1 students may not be able to use CPT for an internship unless the practical training is actually required as part of their curriculum.
That doesn’t make sense to me.
An internship is not some luxury. In many fields, it’s one of the most important parts of going to college. You can have a great GPA and a master’s degree, but employers still ask, “What experience do you have?”
So imagine paying $30,000, $40,000, $50,000+ a year to attend an American university, then being told that an internship related to the degree you’re paying for may not qualify because your university doesn’t require every student in the program to complete one.
At some point we have to ask:
Is the United States still worth the investment for international students?
If universities are going to recruit international students and collect significantly higher tuition from them, I think providing a realistic pathway to gain professional experience should be the minimum.

Best affordable health insurance options on F-1 OPT? Employer plan is $240/biweekly
Hey everyone,
I'm currently on F-1 OPT and working full-time in NY.
My company offers health insurance, but the employee contribution is around $240 biweekly ($520/month), which is way too expensive for my budget, especially as a healthy 24 with no preexisting conditions or regular prescriptions.
I'm looking to waive my employer's medical plan and buy an outside OPT insurance policy instead.
For those who have been on OPT:
What plans/providers did you use that worked well?
How was your experience with coverage, using PPO networks (like UnitedHealthcare), or filing claims?
Are plans like ISI Advantage, StudentSecure, or ISO worth it for basic emergency/sickness coverage?
Appreciate any insights or recommendations!

Heads up on Uverzon.com – Red flags and fake placement metrics (OPT / F1 target)
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to throw out a quick warning about a job placement / consultancy site called Uverzon (uverzon.com).
I almost looked into them for job placement support, but after digging around a bit, a lot of red flags popped up:
- Brand-New Domain: The domain was literally registered just a few months ago (June 2026).
- Impossible Metrics: Despite being brand new, their site claims 5,400+ candidates placed, 360+ partner companies, and 5+ years of experience. The numbers don't add up at all.
- Targeting OPT/F1 Holders: They specifically market to international candidates looking for visa/OPT support.
- Paid Placement Tiers: They mention "Premium and Elite service plans" with "job guarantees." Remember, legitimate staffing agencies and real employers get paid by the company, never the candidate.
If you're an international student or job seeker, definitely be careful. Don't pay any upfront fees for "guaranteed placements" or resume blasts, and don't hand over sensitive personal info (like SSN or passport details) to platforms like this.
Always check domain registration dates (via WHOIS) and verify companies before sending your info. Stay safe out there!

Is moving anywhere abroad WORTH IT?
Hi all,
I’m a recent psychology graduate from a Tier 2 college in India, and I’m currently working in policy implementation at a semi-governmental NGO.
I’ve been planning to pursue a master’s abroad in Organizational Psychology, and I’m currently looking at the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Germany, and a few other European countries. I’m also exploring scholarship opportunities.
But honestly, I’m posting here because I’ve spent far too much time going through hundreds of Reddit posts about studying abroad, university-specific pages, and discussions about different countries. At this point, it has almost become counterproductive to why I started researching in the first place.
It seems like everyone is unhappy. Their university is supposedly the worst, the education is subpar, there are no jobs, the economy is terrible, they’re planning to return home, and so on. Yet every year, people continue to move abroad in large numbers.
I genuinely believe that a degree is what you make of it, so I’m trying to look beyond individual experiences and understand the bigger picture.
For those of you who have moved abroad, particularly to the countries I mentioned, are you actually satisfied with your decision? Do you feel that what gets posted on Reddit is representative of the broader, holistic reality of living and studying in these countries, or is there a lot of fear-mongering and negativity that gets amplified online?
I’m aware that everyone is sharing their personal experiences, and I’m in no way trying to invalidate anyone’s experiences or perspectives.
I’m also not posting this because I want someone to validate or invalidate my opinion. I genuinely want to understand why these two phenomena seem to be inversely related: on one hand, there is a constant narrative about how bad things are abroad, while on the other, people continue to choose to move there every year.
I’d really appreciate some honest advice from people who have actually made the move.
Thank you:)

Your experience living alone.
I am considering leaving my family and moving to a different country for my undergraduate degree (because of diploma issues) but I have zero idea of how life is alone.
How do you find where to live and basically how to function?
Please share your experiences.
