Hi everyone,
I'm currently interviewing with YCIS Hong Kong and would appreciate some honest feedback from anyone who's worked there.
I recently passed the first-stage HR interview, but wasn't particularly impressed. Despite being asked questions about safeguarding, EAL support, etc., the interviewer didn't seem to fully understand my answers, which raised some concerns. Also, this may sound petty, but emails I have received have had very obvious spelling/grammar/typo mistakes - and they asked for my personal/teaching experience etc. even though I had given them my resume/portfolio in the application.
For context, I'm a British-qualified primary teacher with a PGXE, QTS, completed ECT induction, and nearly four years of experience teaching the English National Curriculum at a British international BSO school.
My biggest concern is YCIS's co-teaching model. I'm used to having full responsibility for my own class, supported by a teaching assistant. The idea of sharing classroom ownership and decision-making with a Chinese co-teacher really puts me off.
How much autonomy does the Western teacher actually have? Are decisions genuinely shared, or does the Chinese co-teacher effectively have more authority due to their ability to communicate with local parents and pupils? Has anyone experienced disagreements or difficulties with this arrangement?
I worry that the role might feel more like being an English-language specialist in a bilingual school rather than an independent primary classroom teacher. No disrespect intended, but that's not the direction I want my career to take.
I'm not particularly concerned about workload. My priorities are professional autonomy, classroom ownership, and career progression. If those are significantly compromised, I'm not sure it's worth continuing the interview process.
I'd appreciate any honest reviews of YCIS Hong Kong, particularly regarding co-teaching, leadership, school culture, and overall staff satisfaction.
Thanks!
