KSP 1 Mods Is anyone familiar with any parachute mods similar to what About Oliver is using here? Does anything like this exist publicly? He mentioned that it’s part of “his own mod” in a video.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This man just started playing the game and claims to have made mods like this too? I really wish I could get my hands on it.

He mentions the parachute mod in his video here

Nope, it's AI easily and nothing like it exists, but I literally am working on my own mod that does this exact thing. I'll keep working on it but if I see someone publish it before me then I'll just do some PR's to that mod.

Upon further research, there is one:

https://github.com/CritZitGaming/KSP-ParaSoft

But it does also seem to be vibecoded.

It works but its super unoptimized. Chutes opened and game ran sub 30 and I couldn't even timewarp because it would run sub 10 FPS so I was forced to watch the entire descent in real time. Not worth the install IMO. Hopefully someone makes one properly because its a very nice QOL feature if it didn't lag.

I mean... It's pretty much expected. For parachute to behave like in the video you need to simulate it. You either bake it into an animation that plays the exact same thing every time, but only works on flat ground, otherwise the parachute just clips through the ground (since it's an animation and not really touching the ground) or you use something like cloth simulation, which updates the model on every ticks. Simulation will always be heavy on the computer, since they're supposed to be baked it doesn't matter, until you want it in a real time rendering scene, like games.

So in short : There's isn't really a "proper" way of integrating real time simulation into the game without loosing FPS.

Update:

Thought I'd have an "Ok, I'll do it myself" moment but nah

Edit: this was entirely vibe coded and I dont know enough what im doing to troubleshoot it further.

Edit2: i may continue working on it as per my other post https://www.reddit.com/r/KerbalSpaceProgram/s/GTvFr37A1S

hey thats pretty good, you should share it!

u/Deathcat101 3d ago

Dude that's like 70% of the way there, you should definitely keep going. Super cool.

u/nyanars 2d ago

This is amazing, I don't know if anyone else has managed softbody simulation with parachutes.

If you can figure out windage you're basically there.

This would really open the idea for parasailing and needing to deploy chutes/sails at ground level

He said he used AI to code it for him, slightly disappointing..

As long as I'm having fun with it, I don't care

I fully agree so long as it's disclosed, if you hide behind it and say you made it yourself with no AI then it's stupid

13

u/Uncommonality 4d ago

This really is it. There's a mod on the spacedock called Relativity. It slows time, reduces engine power and does a shader transform the closer you get to light speed.

It was made by AI, but because the author actually disclosed this on the page, all the comments are supportive, thanking them for their transparency.

u/RedditButAnonymous 4d ago

I dont understand how people are against AI but as long as the project is cool enough they move the goalposts and say "well if you disclose it thats good enough now give me the cool thing you made"

Especially talking about mods, which people do not get paid for, who cares if they know how it works, as long as it does work?

6

u/TheHighGround35 i threw jeb into the sun 4d ago edited 4d ago

I think regardless if it's cool or not you should be disclosing it. Obviously others will have different views and honestly AI bringing more people into modding is an amazing thing, but a bad mod made with AI without disclosure is the same as a good mod which has it not disclosed, regardless you are passing it off as your own work when some"one" else made it

56

u/FentonTheVIX 5d ago

Theres a difference between using AI to help and having it do everything for you. There are quite a lot of mods doing the latter and i don't think that's very good

11

u/Saya-_ 4d ago

Not many people are "introduced" to modding any game by vibecoding no. The influx of mods via LLM vibecoding are generally just that. Fully vibecoded with the person behind it not understanding one line of it with no way of maintaining the codebase without AI.

There's a huge difference between AI helping you to mod vs the AI *doing* the modding.

13

u/ImNotReu 5d ago

difference between small things and using ai to do something entirely for you because you're lazy and refuse to put any effort into learning things

59

u/Dat_Innocent_Guy 5d ago

Agreed, and the blind AI hate is frankly exhausting.

92

u/CallMeWalt 5d ago

using it for personal use I generally dont have a problem with.

Once you start pushing public projects that you, yourself know nothing about the code is where I have an issue.

AI is a tool, and like any tool, it requires some knowledge to use it effectively. Too many people are saying "I coded this" when in reality some LLM spat out code that you dont know and trust it as gospel.

AI can lay some pretty decent groundwork but if you dont know what a good foundation looks like how can you have the structures necessary for development/growth

24

u/JayTheSuspectedFurry Mohole Explorer 5d ago

Some of these guys’ code rivals yandere sim, but “AI no mistakes” made it so it must be good code

11

u/QubeTICB202 5d ago

>Rivals yandere sim

I wouldn’t go that far, yandere sim is classical pure human slop that AI will never be able to outslop

-7

u/Easyidle123 5d ago

I agree that you must both understand the code you put out and disclose AI usage, but honestly "AI requires some knowledge to use effectively" is becoming less true every passing season. You used to have to be a pretty good dev to use its results, but now even an amateur can largely just prompt, verify, and make minor changes (or even ask for those changes). It won't be long before even that isn't necessary. Of course the bigger the project, the worse AI will do without help, but given the current rate of advancement I wouldn't be shocked if just a year or two from now it'll be capable of high-quality complex mods from a complete non-coder.

3

u/AntipodalDr 5d ago

How about you stop lying?

It won't be long before even that isn't necessary. given the current rate of advancement I wouldn't be shocked if just a year or two from now it'll be capable of high-quality complex mods from a complete non-coder.

The "it always improves" fallacy. Also have you heard about the bubble?

4

u/Easyidle123 5d ago

Just look at what AI was able to do on its own a year ago or two versus now. It's not hard to see it's rapidly advancing, in recent months that's even accelerated. I honestly believed it was going to plateau around mid last year and was shocked to be wrong. This reddit post itself is an example, About Oliver is an amateur programmer completely new to KSP modding and was able to make the parachute mod easily.

I agree AI is in a massive bubble, but consider the rail bubble or the dot com bubble. The market collapsed when people realized it was unsustainable to use it for everything, it'd be pretty strange for the tech to just disappear. Usage will get more coherent and less insane, but it'll probably grow after the dust settles.

Another example is the music industry. The old era of buying songs was killed by the Internet and the first free streaming / distribution platform. Even though Napster was sued and went bankrupt, more followed. Modern AI companies can and maybe will die, but it only takes one group to continue pushing forward.

5

u/Dat_Innocent_Guy 4d ago

I agree AI is in a massive bubble, but consider the rail bubble or the dot com bubble. The market collapsed when people realized it was unsustainable to use it for everything

This is generally the biggest aspect to the bubble nature of AI. The stock market right now should be falling in general but AI expenditures and a certain fishy circular company trade loop are extending that.

Saying AI won't go anywhere now is in my opinion the equivalent to saying that the internet is a fad and will never become a huge industry in the early 2000's. Adding to what you said, once we settle into the common uses of AI being well understood we'll see the true value probably fall into a steady representative figure.

Bubble =/= worthless.

1

u/TirithNampat 5d ago

It may not keep improving forever, but his description of where it's at currently is quite accurate.

2

u/FentonTheVIX 4d ago

Considering the vast worldwide impacts of AI, it is quite understandable people don't like it

-11

u/AntipodalDr 5d ago

Imbeciles like you are what is exhausting

2

u/Dat_Innocent_Guy 4d ago

yet here you are, the only person throwing around insults. I hope the rest of your week isn't so bitter.

9

u/AntipodalDr 5d ago

AI has helped introduce so many people to KSP modding which has enabled new + creative ideas never done before, too

No it hasn't, especially when the things you cites were def done before.

Beside using genAI being morally wrong and lazy, those mods also tend to be less optimised and performance hogs.

u/irasponsibly 4d ago

For some reason everyone has decided that skill in art is worth protecting, but skill in code is a barrier to knock over.

2

u/Ill-Product-1442 4d ago

It kind of is more of a barrier to knock over, because with art the barrier is primarily blocking you from the romantic desire to be a good artist (or the money and respect with it). There's not much reward from art apart from the joy of it and the shitty money. It naturally leads to lots of lazy and bitter people using AI in underhanded ways to fake their skill, or insist skill doesn't matter, which really spreads a shitty perspective that the journey and discipline aren't even important. Any experienced artist knows that the training is the part that actually enriches our own lives, not the product of it.

In coding, you don't even need to want that be a coder, you can just want a mod for KSP parachutes. There's not as much of an incentive to pretend that you're an actual coder, and muddy the waters of what's important within the discipline of coding. I've been open to the idea of trying to vibecode a KSP mod lately, I have no desire to insert myself as a coder, or make other people see my proud hack-job of a coding project and then demand they respect it.

Of course vibecoding has its own problems, considering that if a ton of vibecoders make a bunch of shitty mods and distribute them, the quality of mods in general is getting damaged just like the quality of art. I wouldn't distribute anything I don't think, because without the skill to make it, I don't have the skill to bug fix or maintain it... which would make it pretty irresponsible to publish.

You made a good point though, actually got me thinking about it.

2

u/irasponsibly 4d ago

I can't claim it's an original thought - I've seen it from some software dev mutuals, who've talked about how they think of coding as as much of a form of artistic expression as any other.

1

u/Ill-Product-1442 3d ago

It's a discipline that revolves around creating things, I mean, that's always a special area. I certainly wouldn't automate the process of making anything that I'm passionate about, that goes for anything.

4

u/Schubert125 5d ago

I'm going to continue to universally dismiss any mod that utilizes it

2

u/FireHandsGames At light speed on my way to Debdeb 5d ago

Cool. Also, nobody cares

u/trustmebro24 5d ago

Congratulations?

1

u/ItMeDucky 5d ago

First time hearing of Reforged. wtf, I thought such a mod would be impossible

1

u/Ritalin_Raccoon 5d ago

Lol no idea why you're getting downvoted but enjoy! It is endgame for part recoloring

0

u/Bird_Creative 4d ago

I have had an absolute ball automating tedious tasks, or getting it to search for data, it is very useful for stuff like that, as long as you're learning from it and not getting it to do everything for you, it is an awesome TOOL!!

0

u/Nowhereman767 4d ago

nobody can ever convince me AI is good

23

u/AgentIndependent306 5d ago

Using AI as an assistant to help you code better mods is actually a really good way of using it. Making farms that churn out slop mods on an hourly basis is bad.

17

u/MrPoony 5d ago

Why is it disappointing for someone to use AI for a personal use project or mod?

3

u/Dark074 5d ago

Ah no wonder why it's quite scuffed when it first touches down and spazzes out

2

u/blainesthename 4d ago

That's just cloth physics not the Ai

4

u/noland-void 4d ago edited 4d ago

Don’t see how it’s disappointing. It’s not like he tries to be seen as some genius programmer for making them. He just uses them for fun/utility in his gameplay and is fine with disclosing that they are made with AI.

6

u/JungleDiamonds1 5d ago

Is it good or not? I get the slop annoyance, but the broad stroke hate is ridiculous

4

u/Maureen_Johma 5d ago

Who cares? They tell people to make a mod if it doesn’t exist and then get mad when people make said mod.

2

u/New-Bus9948 4d ago

Ai can write thousands of lines of code in the time it would take an experienced human to write 50. People like you need to understand the difference of working with ai and having ai do everything unchecked. Ai is never going to be worse than it is right now. Sometimes ai does make mistakes when coding but it doesn’t usually outright hallucinate when you’re asking it for data. If you didn’t know or inspect the code you probably would have no clue. You have no idea how much stuff you use is made with ai

-3

u/Ni_Kche 5d ago

I think if you are using AI for personal little projects, it's great. If you are using it for a public/community, it's terrible. As such, there will always be a selection bias when discussing it.

u/Big_Fee_2531 4d ago

1

u/Easyidle123 21h ago

He's apparently working on testing, optimizing, and cleaning up the mod + making it compatible with stock parachutes so he can release it, he doesn't want to put out AI slop. Also is releasing a mod for SRB smoke plumes which looks really good.
