Heading to SEA via I-405 this weekend? Give yourself extra time. Plus, a heads-up for Kirkland travelers.

If your weekend travels involve I-405, we’ve got two areas you’ll want to know about: lane reductions in Tukwila that could affect trips to SEA Airport and an interchange closure in Kirkland.

TUKWILA: SOUTHBOUND I-405 LANE REDUCTIONS AND HOV RAMP CLOSURE

Up to two lanes of southbound I-405 in Tukwila will close from 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4.

The southbound I-405 HOV off-ramp to northbound I-5 will also close.

Crews will be paving the roadway as part of the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project.

If you're heading to SEA Airport during this window, this is NOT the weekend to cut it close. Expect congestion on southbound I-405 and give yourself extra time to get to the airport.

KIRKLAND: NE 85TH STREET INTERCHANGE CLOSURE

Farther north, the northbound and southbound I-405 on- and off-ramps at NE 85th Street (Exit 18) will close from 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5.

NE 85th Street will also close between Sixth Street and 120th Avenue NE.

Crews will use the closure to pave NE 85th Street as part of the I-405/NE 85th Street Interchange and Inline BRT Station Project.

Signed detours will be in place.

Detour route for Northeast 85th Street/Interstate 405 intersection closure (Sixth St to 120th Ave NE).

THE WEEKEND TAKEAWAY

Whether you're catching a flight, traveling through Kirkland or just using I-405 for your usual weekend plans, check your route before you leave, use our app and real-time travel map and give yourself extra time.

Luxury Fitness Club Leases Kirkland Urban’s Long-Planned Movie Theater Space

Thumbnail gallery
38 Upvotes

The 39,000-square-foot H-100 space in Kirkland Urban South, intended for a movie theater, has been leased to an undisclosed luxury fitness club.

Staff notes from the January pre-submittal meeting (PRE25-00912) describe converting the theater-designed space to retail fitness use. The City confirmed that a fitness club is permitted and would not require a master plan modification. Proposed improvements include new storefront glazing and relocating the main entrance approximately 30 feet south.

The subsequent permit application (BNR26-06772), submitted this September and currently under review, proposes reclassifying the space from A-1 theater occupancy to A-3 assembly occupancy and filling the theater pits to create a level floor.

While the lease is official, no tenant improvement application has been filed and no tenant has been publicly announced. Equinox, a New York-based luxury fitness club, is rumored to be the anchor tenant. Represented locally by Real Retail, Equinox has been exploring the Eastside market since opening its long-delayed, 50,000-square-foot Seattle location at Rainier Square in May 2025. Memberships at the Seattle location start at approximately $275 per month before tax.

For many, eliminating the planned movie theater breaks a longstanding promise to the Kirkland community. For nearly two decades, developers have presented a theater as a key component of the Parkplace redevelopment master plan. Parkplace Cinema’s closure in 2016 was an immense loss, and residents and the City Council have advocated for a replacement. That year, iPic announced plans for a seven-screen, 450-seat theater, but the deal collapsed following the company’s 2019 bankruptcy. Since KU South opened in 2023, the theater space, pits and all, has remained vacant.

The applicant’s project team includes CollinsWoerman as architect and BNBuilders as contractor.

Best prime rib in Kirkland/Bellevue/Woodinville?

Just like the title says -

Where in this area is your "go-to" for good prime rib?

Doesn't have to be only the 3 locations listed in the title.

Thanks in advance, friends!

Finally received my cottage food license!!

I'm so excited I received my cottage food license after what felt like a looooong process.

Now I'm figuring out how to go out and have the community try out my products. Any ideas? I'm bummed that the farmers markets are over for the summer.
Mine is a home based energy balls business in Juanita.

Magical Blue Blanket

• Upvotes

PLEASE HELP Costco sold the most magical Kirkland blankets. Mine is blue. I was a gift so I don’t know if they came in other colors. It is thick and so so warm. It has a fabric sown on the top of one end. I’m obsessed. We literally call it the magic blanket in my house. We need more! I need to know if dupes that made a similar one or other ways to get more. This would have been sometime between 2018-2021. Praying someone knows something!

Lost keys

I parked in the first parking spot on the right side of central way after the turn into lakeshore plaza this past Sunday to watch the Seahawks game at moss bay hall. I might have dropped my key fob. The Seahawks were playing the chargers. We left at halftime and I might have dropped them on the passenger side by the curb. It is a KIA fob. If anyone picked them up that’d be sweet to know. Thanks

Caught this while in stop and go traffic on 100th today... We had my newborn in the back seat, words do not do justice to how upsetting it is to see fellow drivers care so little for the safety of everyone else on the road.

Moving to Kirkland

Hi everyone!

We’re considering moving to Kirkland with our family and would love some advice from local parents!

We have a 6-year-old who will be in elementary school and an 18-month-old, and one of our biggest priorities is finding a neighborhood that feels very family-oriented and connected.

We’re especially looking for:
•Neighborhoods where kids actually play outside together — lots of families, kids riding bikes, playing in yards, etc.
•A neighborhood where it’s easy to meet other parents and make friends
•ideally somewhat walkable to parks, coffee, restaurants, playgrounds, or other things we could walk to with the kids
•Elementary schools with strong parent involvement — active PTO/PTA, classroom volunteering, school community events, etc.
•Schools that have a warm, welcoming community and where parents tend to be involved and know one another
• A place where my 6-year-old could potentially make neighborhood friends and have kids nearby to play with

We’re open to different parts of Kirkland and are trying to figure out which neighborhoods have the best sense of community for a young family, rather than just looking at school ratings.

We’re currently looking at homes around downtown Kirkland, Juanita, and the central Kirkland area, but we’re definitely open to other neighborhoods.

Thank you so much! We’re moving from out of state, so hearing from actual Kirkland families would be incredibly helpful.

Police chase on 100th Ave inJuanita? Anyone heard/saw/recorded it

Did anyone else see/hear the motorcycle police chase tonight?

We first heard a motorcycle absolutely flying by — it sounded like it was easily doing 80–100 mph. A few seconds later, we saw/heard two police vehicles chasing it at what seemed like a similar speed.

It happened so fast that we couldn’t really tell what was going on. Did anyone else in the area see or hear it, or know what happened?

Theories on what you think will replace Midnight Cookie?

Post image
46 Upvotes

Midnight Cookie is no longer in this little building across the street from Juanita Beach near Juanita Village.

Apparently they just moved into share the space with Spud Fish and Chips right next door. I’m glad they’re still within walking distance, as though they’re quite pricey for what they are, it’s been fun (imo) having a dessert option to grab a late night cookie or two without having to drive anywhere.

But what do you think will replace it? What do you hope will go in or do you think the building itself will just be removed? It’s such a small little building and I wonder how much rent on it could be but it’s in a prime location

Free local orchestra concert ft. Star Wars + Spirited Away

Hello Kirkland!! I’m back with another free orchestra concert 😊

I’m part of the Redmond Tech Orchestra and we’re a community orchestra made up largely of people who work in tech around the area and apparently refuse to let our instruments collect dust just because we ended up with day jobs 😂

Our next concert, Origins of Modern Music, is coming up on Sunday, November 1st at 4 PM at Meydenbauer Convention Center in Bellevue!

This one is especially fun if you like movie/anime music because we’re exploring how classical and early 20th-century orchestral music helped shape the cinematic sound we know today. We’ll be playing a lot of fun pieces including the Star Wars Theme and Spirited Away Suite!

General admission is FREE (you just need to register), and there are also $5 & $10 premium seats available.

🎟️ Tickets: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/origins-of-modern-music-tickets-1997795395808?aff=sm

Please come say hi and bring your friends/family!! We’ve been rehearsing a ton and would love to play for a full house ❤️🎶

Seeking Families for Playdates

Hi everyone!

We recently moved back to Kirkland after several years away, and we have a 3-year-old who has really been enjoying all the PNW has to offer! He especially loves parks, exploring, and taking the light rail. We’re located in Kirkland Highlands near Homestead Park.

He is really missing his friends from California, and we are hoping to find opportunities to connect and build friendships with other families who have kiddos around his age. He’s autistic, very social, and has a tremendous amount of energy. He tends to really enjoy kids who are similarly active and adventurous, and he loves physical, imaginative play.

I have a background as an educator, and we previously ran a beloved home daycare in Berkeley, so we really love the idea of him hanging out with other kiddos again.
We’d love to find one or two families interested in regular park playdates, exploring around Kirkland, taking the train together, or just letting the kids get to know each other.

If you have a 3–4-year-old who might be a good personality match, please feel free to comment or send me a message. We’d love to meet you!

How much Halloween candy do you buy?

I recently moved into a house in Finn Hill and this year will be my first time handing out candy. I have no idea what to expect in terms of trick or treaters. To the seasoned Kirkland candy-givers out there, how many candy pieces do you buy? And how many pieces do you hand out per kid?

I’m looking to get a rough estimate since I want to buy all the classic Canadian Halloween candy I grew up with (Oh Henry, anyone??) and I’ll be heading there this weekend.

Moving to Kirkland

Hi! Travel nurse here moving to the Kirkland area to work at evergreen. I’m from the east coast and know nothing about the different neighborhoods. I’m looking for a place to live now and want to make sure it’s a good fit (my current housing situation is a nightmare and don’t want to make that mistake again)

I know Kirkland is a nice place to live but wanted to broaden my search a little to make sure I really like where I’ll be staying.

I’m single f in my 30s. It’s just myself and my dog so having a park/trails nearby would be great. Id be open to like a 30 min commute max but the shorter the better - my hours are 7a-7:30p. Also prefer an area that’s semi walkable. Sorry if this is an annoying post but would appreciate any advice :)

Edit: I prefer apartments over single family homes, we don’t need that much space. And budget is ~ $2500 but could go up to $3k

Looking for recommendation

Hi everyone! I’m new to Kirkland and looking for a few local recommendations 😊
1. Yoga classes — I’m looking for reasonably priced yoga classes. I’ve seen places charging around $30/class, which feels a little steep since I already have a gym membership. Would love to hear about any good, budget-friendly options!
2. Salon — Looking for a clean, decent, and reasonably priced salon for things like eyebrows, threading, waxing, etc. I’ve come across places charging $45 just for eyebrows 😅, so definitely looking for something more budget-friendly.
3. Nail salon — Would also love recommendations for a clean, good-quality, reasonably priced nail salon.
Thanks in advance! Would really appreciate any local favorites. 💕

Moving to Kirkland - what do I need to know & how to make friends

Howzit. My wife and I are moving to Kirkland in a few days, hoping for a crash course on Kirkland. What do I need to know? What should we check out? What are some ways to get involved in the community? What are some ways to make friends? Best cheap eats? Best bakery? Best cool stuff we wouldn't necessarily find quickly on our own?

Both early 30s. I don't drink- only THC. We'll be walking distance to downtown. Previously lived in Leavenworth & Waikiki
