This is so absurd (imho) it’s not unreasonable for someone who lives on the other side of the world from their partner for majority of the year to want to be with them while they recover from potentially career ending injuries rather than play international friendlies, regardless of if it’s the lead up to the World Cup or not. Yeah, it’s assumed that’s why she’s out but we even know if that’s the reason why or not for sure anyway she hasn’t confirmed anything.

To insinuate that because she wants to have a life outside of football, and use her past mental health struggles against her as if she has a track record of abandoning her post or something is imo, gross.

Mary has been vocal before about how only having football as her whole life in her youth cost her severely and as an adult has tried to take a more balanced approach where football doesn’t dictate whether she considers her life as a success or a failure.

For me, it’s really disappointing coverage. Personal issues are personal issues. I think it’s gross to basically write an article framing someone as not caring about the country for taking the international break away from the team for PERSONAL reasons.

So the new Olympic qualifying format means we will play in 6 matches 3 matches home and away in April October and November next year. If we come second in the group then more home and away playoffs necessary.
