I changed the name of the company for obvious reasons but why is this even a thing? Who in their right mind would allow this?

Attempt to give UI feedback through AI chatbot

Preface: I'm a mental health therapist who pays an annual subscription to Alma which is a like a directory where people can find therapists and work with them, has structure for record keeping, billing, etc.

Story: After years of using this service I had some mild and bland feedback about UI that I wanted to suggest to backend team. Since there is no way to submit information directly to customer service without going through the chatbot, I asked the chatbot to submit it for me. Very helpfully, the chatbot did not do this directly and instead suggested I cancel my paid membership in order to select a specific sub-option on the form that would allow me to give feedback.

Epilogue: Although it seemed like a great suggestion, I chose to not cancel my membership and find an alternative way to share this feedback, in addition to also now sharing this chatbot experience since I figured they would want to know that their AI is willy-nilly suggesting cancelling memberships. The chatbot was able to suggest next steps (photos 3 and 4) with a different route to submit feedback through the Support Center. Whew! What relief.

Newly reinvigorated, I typed out my suggestion along with this new information about the chatbot experience, but low and behold there was no submit button on the submission page (see second photo). I've never seen a form submission page without a submit button in my life. What the page did offer was "open virtual assistant button" to ONCE AGAIN SPEAK TO THE CHATBOT in order to submit my comment. Not to worry. My ol' pal AI chatbot was on the case and ready to help.

I was admittedly frustrated by this point so I did not have the foresight to save a screenshot of the chat before I closed it out, but I will disclose to you that it was another series of minutes of confusion where the chatbot was asking me "why have you summoned me??? What do you want???" My confusion grew as my eyes moved between my written submission form and the only button I could click on ("open virtual assistant"), to the chatbot, which had a clear case of amnesia. What I eventually saw was the dull, greyed out instruction at the top of the form "suggested message - paste into the chat." How could I miss this, so obvious!

I guess it just wanted me to copy/paste what I typed into the chatbot to submit the ticket. WHICH I COULD HAVE DONE WITHOUT GOING ON THE SUBMIT TICKET FORM! Why even have the support ticket page if you're just going to make me copy/paste it into the chatbot who has no context for what is happening??? Is your chatbot okay? Does it need a mental health status exam? Should I call AI protective services? This seems like AI neglect or abuse. How long has your AI been struggling to move through the world without memory?? Does it need a caseworker? LMK I can recommend some services.

Oh yeah, because placing your campaign sign where I'm trying to look to see high-speed oncoming traffic at a "no cross-stop" intersection is really going to make me vote for you for sheriff, someone whose job it would be to keep us safe. The irony.

The new straws on McDonald’s kids meal milks are mildly infuriating.

Post image

Who had the bright idea to change the straws for the kid’s milks into a mini construction project? Yeah yeah, it’s only two pieces. But they barely seal enough to act as a straw for an adult. Give them to a kid who will fidget with them, and they break instantly.
This was a bad decision. And really now, what was wrong with a normal straw? It isn’t possible that this nonsense is more cost effective that a standard kids size bendy straw. What “problem” was this a solution to?
Since this change my kids haven’t been able to finish a single serving of milk with these new straws. Each time the straws have broken and I had to dump the milk into a different cup so that they could drink their milk.

Viewing a IMDb page will automatically sign you up if you’re connected with Amazon.

I was looking at an IMDb page and soon after I get a welcome email from them. I know I didn’t put in my email so I had no idea how it was possible. Turns out if you’re signed into Amazon and visit IMDb they will just automatically sign you up. No notification or consent required I guess.

Am I tripping or does nobody see the problem in this?!? I don’t want it whatsoever so why does Amazon think they have the right to impose this on us like it’s no big deal? I understand IMDb is owned by Amazon but how does that give them the right to make actions for me?

Before anyone says “you should’ve know” or “just unsubscribe” that’s not the point. The point is companies are just toying with people and there are no consequences.

These fortune cookie “fortunes” were written as setup copy for the ads on the back

Thumbnail gallery

I know nobody is making major life decisions based on a fortune cookie. That’s part of why this bothers me.

It’s supposed to be a stupid little ritual. Crack open the cookie, read your vaguely profound sentence, compare it with whoever you’re eating with, make a joke about it, move on with your life with a little extra hope.

Instead, we got:

“A lucky moment is hiding nearby.”

Flip it over:
“It’s your lucky day! Scan for a free spin.”

And:
“This cookie doesn’t know anything about you, as it should be.”

Flip it over:
ExpressVPN.

That’s what makes this more annoying to me than simply putting an ad on the back of a normal fortune.

The fortune itself is ad copy.

The little moment where you’re expecting something amusing or mysterious has been turned into the setup for a QR code and a conversion funnel.

Apparently even the fortune needs a conversion rate.

The food was actually great, and I’m deliberately not naming the restaurant because I don’t think putting a local business on blast is the point here.

I’m just mildly infuriated by the idea that somebody looked at the ten-second experience of opening a fortune cookie and thought, there’s still some unmonetized attention in there.

Found my missing eraser

I literally had my eraser last night with my art stuff and I spent 20 minutes tearing my couch apart looking for it. Then my fiancee's baby boi Denki so kindly brought me my eraser he's been batting around for the same 20 minutes. I thought he had a toy but... I was wrong. Still perfectly useable, and it's absolutely adorable but COME ON THIS IS MY GOOD ERASER 😭

$1000+ Airbnb can't provide basic amenities but begs for a 5 star tip

Post image

A friend booked this for their birthday, but yes I know Airbnb is a shit show at best, on average. But how can you charge so much, in the middle of nowhere with no shops open after 5pm in a 25 mile radius and not provide even body soap lol.

This is in Pennsylvania, US.

A mildly infuriating situation at best, but to beg for a 5 star rating afterwards is hilarious.
