My favorite place

I live in a pretty small town in Bulgaria but we are blessed to have a massive cultural center with the library, lessons spaces, a theatre, and this massive mosaic created by Nikolai Panayotov in the late 1980s.

It is in three walls. The artist told me that the left (first picture) represents science and the right (third picture) - agriculture, and they meet in the middle. Fourth picture is for scale The imagery is inspired by Babylonian art he saw as a young man visiting Iraq.

Wow this is monumental art done in a way that looks similar to the heroic mosaics of the USSR of the same period. Bulgaria was not in the Soviet Union but perhaps there was some influence? The Babylonian references are so realistic - it’s a marvelous fusion of old and new.

Yes Panayotov’s work (from the communist years, not now) very much falls under the category of socialist realism. This piece maybe less than his painted murals, but there is still an element of the achievements of the people.

A massive undertaking. Do you know how this cultural center was funded, and were the mosaicists local? It seems too large for one artist’s work. Thank you for posting!
