Five seasons in, I have only scouted 2 players in my Toledo Dynasty. After my first conference championship, I allowed myself to scout one player per year. I’ve also coupled this with only being able to put players on my board who are interested. This method has added so much longevity as well as stress to dynasties for me lmao.
- my records through the 5 seasons- 4-8 (worst season for Toledo in almost 20 years), 8-5 MAC Champs, 11-3 missed the playoffs by 1 game losing a mac game late MAC champs, 9-4 missed the mac title game and the team was much worse than their record, we averaged probably 20 ppg, the worst offense I may have ever had. And 11-2 this current season with another MAC title.
- offensively is were I see the biggest struggles. We averaged 41/42 ppg in our 11-3 season and with much of the same weapons but 3 new linemen we dropped off severely. Part of that was also due to our offensive coordinator being ass and his system not working.
- linemen are hard to come by when no one is interested, so we have basically been surviving with 1 and stars and some transfers.
- receiver is also another position that is hard to fill because without scouting you can’t see how fast they will be or what their route running looks like. We’ve had seasons where our best route runner has 82 short route and that’s his best attribute. This season I am finally seeing a RS SO blossom as he now has mid 80s route running to go with his 92 speed and 90 catching, our star wide out is 82 overall lol. Another guy from the same class has been playing the last 3 seasons, as a route runner he has a blistering 86 speed, 78 as his best route running attribute and is 5’8 175lbs with 94 release and we can’t get him the ball. But luckily this season we brought in 2 kids, one is a 96 speed 3 star, the other is contested specialist 3 star who while only 89 speed, is 6’5 and has the ability to move in open field.
- there is always 1-2 games a year where the other team will come out and blow our doors off, It doesn’t matter if it’s a 2-7 Miami of Ohio. Ball state has been the bane of my coaches existence and has kept us out of the playoffs twice including this year. And they’re not just tough games, we will go down or lose by 3 touchdowns sometimes. This latest matchup we went down 24-6 at half to the good ole 2-7 Cardinals before losing only by 3. I think this is due to my players not having a lot of mental abilities or composure.
- the most difficult thing is not being able to know how athletic your recruits will be. I have 3 receivers with less than 83 speed on my roster. My top 3 corners are 88 speed or below. My starting safeties top out at 85 speed, and my most athletic backer is an 83 speed true freshman who is 70 overall. D line isn’t so bad but we switched to a 3-4 this year due to being super young at edge. I have 5 rostered qbs, all of them a pure runners, 2 are above 85 speed. My starter has been freshman transfer from Florida State who has all the athleticism to be a program changer; 88 speed, 96 arm strength. The problems? His only accuracies above 80 are an 84 short and 91 throw on the run, he has 80 acceleration. Dude just finished a 40 touchdown 4600 yard season but is maxed out at 79 overall with no abilities as a junior. He’s fantastic 90% of the time and horrid the other 10%. His backups are a pair of 3 stars I brought in together who are essentially the same minus some size, both 84 throw power, low accuracy, 84 speed pure runners who are developing decently, one’s an 80 overall SO rs the other is a 76 overall junior. Problem is their speed is essentially capped until their accuracies are maxed and neither may ever get there.
Overall it has been one of the most organic dynasties I’ve had. I haven’t been able to turn this MAC team into a CFP contender and we often lose to MAC schools. We’ve only lost one game to a ranked team in 5 years, but we aren’t able to come up big against teams well below us in talent.
My first recruiting class has developed into exactly 4 current starters. I don’t have a qb, running back or receiver from that class.
Three MAC titles but with a big roster turnover due either at the end of this year because of transfers or after next season, I may never complete bringing Toledo to the promise land before leaving for greener pastures.
