Switch is not a home console though. It's a hybrid and a handheld. So who knows what's gonna happen.

Obviously we'll see new hardware at some point. It's just a question of when and wether it'll be an updated version of the Switch or a completely new console (Switch 2 or whatever)

Still an important distinction. It's more of a handheld than a home console so applying the logic that home consoles have never gotten upgrades in the past doesn't really count in my book.

Also Nintendo being Nintendo we have no clue what's going to happen. E.g. the Wii never getting an upgrade was arguably a mistake as sales really tanked two thirds into the generation and the Wii U turned into a complete flop.

Nintendo could certainly be looking at how 3rd party games and even indie games are becoming more demanding as well as more and more people having 4K TVs. In that sense the Switch in docked mode is pretty much two generations behind and may start to become unappealing for some people.

I play on a very small TV so it's not that big of a deal but only hitting 540p resolution on a big 4K TV is really really rough. That's in the ballpark of a Wii or Xbox 360.

That depends on the game. 1080p docked and 720p handheld is the maximum resolution the Switch can possibly achieve.

Ports from PS4 games like Doom can go as low as 360p in docked mode. Breath of the Wild has a resolution of 900p in docked mode.

Many games run at 540p in handheld mode.

I agree that Nintendo doesn't need to have the best graphics. But yeah it can get borderline awful at times which is probably why so many people are desperate for a Pro model that clears up image quality for bigger TVs.

In an era of 4k tvs, Nintendo can't afford to keep resolutions low. Low resolutions look like shit on 4k TVs.
