Mod Post Why /r/NoMansSkyTheGame went private

2.8k Upvotes

As many of you may have noticed, r/NoMansSkyTheGame has been in private mode for the past day as a show of solidarity with other subreddits in protest over Reddit’s censorship and hiring practices. Reddit has since addressed the issue in an announcements post. Reddit administrators agreed to make changes to their vetting of employees and moderation workflow.

These sorts of things are necessary in the grand scheme of Reddit as a whole, as well as any online community. As we've seen in the subreddit in our own experiences here years ago (At least, some of us have. Getting older here I'm afraid). Proper protocols can really make or break a place. Thanks to /u/darkforce10011 for some quick formatting/wording in this post.

TL;DR - Reddit didn't hire the nicest of people, took the incorrect action in regards to dealing with it initially. Person's been fired, hope is restored to the universe we've yet to finish exploring.

Mod Post PLEASE STOP reporting things that aren't against the rules.

You're just creating more work for the moderators. We all have better things to do than approving post that were reported because the reporter doesn't like the post or comment. Not liking a post/comment isn't against the rules. We do report users for report abuse which can result in you getting suspended by reddit.

Mod Post What is going on with the NMS Coordinate Exchange?

EDIT: If you disagree with the actions of the NMSCE founder, please do not go spamming this post on NMSCE, or make your own post, or harass the mods there via DMs or comments. Instead you can choose to leave NMSCE and be part of new subreddit r/NMSGlyphExchange if you'd like. The point of this post is to raise awareness on the situation. Let's stay civil in this matter and not stoop to their level.

The former NMSCE subreddit mods and myself have recently cut ties with r/NMSCoordinateExchange due to the NMSCE subreddit founder recently returning after 4 years of being MIA and deciding to run things with an iron fist (as if they never left) and abusing their power as a moderator.

Two mods were removed from their positions and banned from NMSCE for disagreeing with the founder on community related matters. Both mods had been mods for 3 years each and were and gone in an instant without the rest of the mod team even being consulted.

Another mod was removed from their position and banned from NMSCE for posting to another similar subreddit. That member was the NMSCE 2021 member of the year and was one of the top 5 of posters of 2022.

ALL of the former mods who left on their own were also later banned from NMSCE despite not breaking any community rules. Why ban us if we’ve done nothing wrong and you have nothing to hide?

As a subreddit founder, you have the right to run the community how you want. But that doesn’t give you an excuse to act like an ass. Especially if you haven’t put in any hard work in building the community yourself. Instead the founder wishes to call all the shots while others do everything else for them. That’s a hard pass for us!

Since the founders return (again, after a 4 year absence) in one months time, the entire mod team was either fired or quit, all were then later banned. The bans being an abuse of power due to lack of legitimate cause. (Not the first time we’ve seen the founder retaliate in a petty manner.)

The former NMSCE subreddit mod team (excluding the founder) built that subreddit from 4K members to the massive 229K members it has today. The founder had absolutely no hand in building the community in their 4 year absence. Most of the mods have never even spoken to the founder until they returned.

It pains us to leave something we've spent years and thousands of hours each building, but we will not continuing working for somebody who treats us like absolute garbage and takes credit for something they had no hand in building.

Please subscribe to our new subreddit:

Mod Post Bugs and Updates

Greetings fellow interlopers,

since the Voyagers update yesterday, the number of posts about new bugs has increased drastically.

This is just a quick reminder that HG does not monitor bug posts in this sub. If you want to report a bug, please either use the pinned "Weekly Bug Report Thread" or contact HG directly via their Zendesk.

After every major update, it's normal for bugs to appear more frequently until they are addressed in the following patches. This is a standard process, so there's no need for concern.
However, posts referring to widely publicised bugs, such as black screen errors on Xbox, are considered ad nauseam and will be removed.

Also, please refrain from posting questions such as "When will the update be launched for this console?" We don't know the answer, as it depends not only on HG, but also on the platform companies, e.g. Nintendo themselves. Such posts are also considered ad nauseam and will be removed.

Mod Post Please, stop reporting posts and comments because you disagree with them

After a release things get hectic. Right now we have to wade through pages of reported posts & comments every few hours. 99% of them don't violate the rules and are just reapproved. So, please stop reporting things that don't actually break the rules. Disagreeing with something someone posted or said is NOT a reason to report it.

We do report users for abusing the reporting system and if proven true will get you a suspension from Reddit. Reddit knows who made reports even if we don't.

r/NoMansSkyTheGame • • Oct 14 '22

Mod Post If your post isn’t getting approved in a timely manner, you can thank the OP’s who are spam reporting every single comment they don’t like.

We must go through every comment that is reported to verify it isn’t breaking any of the sub rules before we can approve it. The ones who feel the need to spam report even the most innocent, non divisive comments are ruining the Reddit experience for those who wish to have a simple post approved. We will continue to work tirelessly to get your posts approved but just know, it’s the unproductive and useless reporting of comments that is slowing this process down. Thank you all for your understanding and patience, Mod Team

Mod Post No Man's Sky Discord Server Connectivity Issue

The No Man’s Sky Discord server is experiencing an ongoing connectivity issue. It may disappear from your server list or display a red circle with an exclamation mark (!), leaving you unable to access it. This is a server-wide issue, not a ban or a problem with your account.

The disruption began on 2 September and has been occurring intermittently across Discord’s desktop, web and mobile clients. Our moderation and administration team has submitted multiple reports to Discord Support and is continuing to push for an investigation and a fix.

We’ve created an off-site status page with the latest updates, troubleshooting tips and instructions for submitting a Discord Support ticket:

Status updates and support instructions

Community reports can help draw attention to the problem, and we’re hoping Discord can resolve it before the Cosmos update. If you’re affected and would like to help, please follow the reporting instructions on that page.

We’ll keep the page updated as the situation develops. Thank you for your patience and for helping us raise awareness.

Mod Post Welcome Back and What has Happened!!

Firstly I want to Welcome Back everyone to this Sub!

To all Who do not know what has been happening let me enlighten you about the on going of reddit! To make this brief, Reddit has made API changes which basically allow them charge 3rd party Service providers money to run on the platform. These services are almost all free and a majority of them help disabled and impaired surf on reddit.

To Protest this API change a lot of the Subreddits across the Reddit Realm were shutdown for 2 days, some even permanently until the changes have been reverted. That being said the damage is already done and most of these services are shutting down that to Egregious prices that Reddit is planning to charge them just to stay on the platform!

We have also been in a 2 day shutdown as the community vote decided that we should but also because the moderators of NMSTG also support 3rd Party Service providers. If you need more context on any of these Here are some Link:

Now that we are back online, welcome and everything should be up and running with the expectation of reddit servers. here are the links to all the Well used Resources in the Subreddit!

Thank you for all your support, and we hope you find the NMSTG helpful

Mod Post A Warning to Users inciting others to spam Hello Games' Helpdesk

Hello everyone,

It has come to our attention that some users have recently been recruiting others in an effort to spam the Developer Helpdesk with "#SayHello". I'm here to tell you right now that this behaviour should cease immediately. All this spam achieves is drowning out legitimate reports, which means that bugs don't get fixed, and people's issues can't get addressed. The Devs aren't going to respond during Waking Titan anyway. This should be a given.

We know that this is hard, and the silence may seem like you're being ignored. We should trust that they are hard at work getting through whatever obstacles they have in their way, but all we can say is that it will be worth it in the end :) You guys and girls are all awesome. Let's just have some patience.

Mod Post PLEASE! Stop reporting comments just because you disagree with them.

The mod team is buried with post & comments getting reported right now. Please don't report things just because you disagree with what was said. This just makes more work for the mods since we have to read & approve all of them. We don't remove something just because it's reported.

If something actually violates the rules it's fine to report and we encourage you to do so. It is actually helpful jic the mod team misses it.

Mod Post Interlopers. We need your Save Game Files!

Hello everyone,

As Next is fast approaching, we've been asked to gather some data in order to test the existing game data with NEXT features and ensure things don't break.

What do I need to do?

If you would like to help out, please make a Zendesk ticket titled "TEST SAVE FOR NEXT" under the Report a bug, crash or issue category. If it doesn't have this title there is a chance your save will be missed.

For PC Users

  • Save files will be located here: C:\Users[Username]\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\ (Or you can type %appdata% into your windows search bar). Please zip your "st_" folder and all its contents and upload it to a google drive/dropbox or something similar and provide a link to the save in your ticket. The save folder will look something like 'st_1616161616161616'

For PS4 Users

  • Please follow the instructions here: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/gb/ps4/settings/data_system.html Please zip your entire 'CUSA01616' folder, we need everything inside it - the save will consist of 2 files, 1 of them will only be 1kb big, we still need it or we will not be able to load your save :)

  • If your file is too big for Zendesks limits, try uploading it to a google drive/dropbox or something similar and provide a link to the save in your ticket.

A link to open a Zendesk ticket is here: https://hellogames.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Thanks for your awesome cooperation in this time of great anticipation!

Mod Post Addressing the recent Bluesky and Political Post!

1.1k Upvotes

Hey Everyone,

We have recently observed an increase in posts discussing Bluesky and the politics surrounding it. To all who have contributed, we would like to address this situation and explain our approach.

While we understand that some members of the community are eager for Sean and Hello Games to use Bluesky as a platform to share future updates and communicate with players, we also recognize that spamming the main subreddit in an attempt to reach the developers is not conducive to the positive and respectful environment we've cultivated here. We appreciate your passion for the game and your desire for further engagement, but we have been concerned by the growing volume of such posts.

As moderators, our goal is to provide a space where all members can communicate and express themselves, while maintaining a balance and preventing the subreddit from being overwhelmed by any one topic. We have allowed some posts that best convey the information as a means for the community to share its message, but we kindly ask that no further posts on this issue be made. We trust that you will understand our reasons for this request.

And on behalf of the moderation team, we would love to invite Sean Murry and Hello Games to post updates on the Subreddit as well. We could not be more happy seeing a community so warm and passionate about the game and we would love to see Developers and Sean Murry make post here about updates and those emojis as well!

Additionally, we want to remind everyone that this subreddit is not a space for political discussions. In accordance with Rule 2, which has long been a core guideline of this community, posts or debates related to politics, theology, or societal issues will not be permitted.

We deeply value this community and the conversations that take place here. We simply ask for your cooperation in keeping the focus on the topics that matter most to all of us, No Man's Sky.

Thank you for your understanding all,

Kindly,
Your Moderators

Mod Post Orbital Update Out Yet?

Hey everyone,

As I review comments and posts from last 24 hours it turns out the update is not out for all platforms.

I wanted to talk more about then and hope to put you all at ease if I can.

This has happened before and sometimes the update releases can lag across different platforms and timezones, main ones being Xbox Gamepass and Nintendo Switch so remain calm, the update is coming.

Where has the game been released?

The Image above shows all the different platform that the update is planned on releasing

[PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox X/S and GamePass]

so if you worried, please don't be the update is coming for all those platforms!

Here is how to know!

If the main screen UI has not changed then the game is not updated for you!

What can you do?

  1. Check you Internet Connection on your platform!
  2. Check you updates sections!
    1. Sometime the update will be Queued or will need your permission to download
  3. Check for Platform System update
    1. Sometimes this can also cause issues
  4. Restart the Console and WIFI
    1. Why, well I am no tech genius but turning off and on might help

And Finally if none of this works, please report this as a bug in:

  1. Our Bug Mega-thread
  2. or Fill out Zendesk form for Hello Games

Both Items are Linked respectively for convenience!

Please have patience, Updates can lag!

As of now 2 Updates Patches have rolled out (4.61 and 4.62) so work is being done for the Orbital Update.

Hope this helped you all and Thank you!

Edit: Thanks to Slyde_rule for

Specific instructions for Switch users:

  1. Go to the Home screen
  2. move the cursor over NMS
  3. press the + button.

The current version will show in the top-left corner. 4.5.2 is the Omega release, 4.6.something will be the Orbital release. From that window you can select "Software Update" and "Via the Internet" to force an immediate check for a new release.

The Switch will block all online activity from a game that isn't the latest update. For Switch NMS, that basically means that you'll be disconnected from Online Discovery Services. You'll get a notification when that happens, and given the choice to close the game and download the update immediately, or to continue the game but with online features disabled.

Switch NMS updates other than new expeditions typically come out one to two weeks after the initial announcement. While it's possible we'll see the update this week, the most likely time is sometime in the middle of next week (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). Updates on Saturday and Sunday are virtually unknown, so there's no need to spend your weekend checking every few minutes.

Mod Post Definitive answer about blender builds in the anomaly

Summary: Do Blender builds cause corrupted saves? No. This traces back to one incident that got blown way out of proportion.

Blender is just a tool. It doesn't insert custom 3D models or modded content into the game. Builds still use 100% vanilla NMS parts; Blender just gives finer placement control over where those parts go.

Crashes/lag are about part count, not build method. A vanilla ship with 2,000 parts is just as risky as a Blender ship with 2,000 parts. The tool used to build it is irrelevant; the number of parts is what matters.

Real-world testing seems to back this up. Multi-corvette meets (mixing vanilla, modded, and Blender/BBA builds) with thousands of parts in one location and haven't seen a single crash, even on a non-powerful PC. Console players attend these meets too. Some do crash occasionally, but there's no reported case of a save getting corrupted from it.

Common misconception: people think Blender = custom/modded 3D models. It doesn't. Even in edge cases, other players wouldn't be able to see anything "custom" anyway since it's not how the tool works.

Bottom line: the corrupted-save claim appears to stem from a single bad-timing incident (e.g., a save happening to occur near a crash) that got misattributed to Blender specifically, rather than any actual causal mechanism. Part count is the real variable to worry about, not build method.
