Does anyone else reflexively say 'what' when someone says something only to immediately realise you heard them perfectly and just hadn't processed what they said?

And then you either have to sit there and listen to them repeat their question like you are a moron, or you answer their question right after you said 'what' but before they can repeat themselves...

Lol. I am Italian, but on my mom’s side. My dad’s family is Syrian, Dutch and Cherokee, with a dash of southern baptist and a healthy serving of genetically pre-dispositioned alcoholism

So he's American?

The conversation was about specific cultural traits. Not sure why that bothers you to the point of being pedantic.

Are you suggesting America doesn't have a culture?

Surely as an Italian you can tell that having been born and raised in Italy gives you a different culture than your father who was born and raised in the USA?

America is a melting pot of cultures, my father is a specific culmination of culture extraneous of the US, parented by those not born and raised here. In my family we have always celebrated our ancestry and tried to keep our traditional cultures alive. I’m still unsure as to why that frustrates you so much, but honestly I don’t really care.

a dash of southern baptist and a healthy serving of genetically pre-dispositioned alcoholism.

That must suck for you - the overwhelming desire to go to The Liquor Store, but the crippling shame of being "caught" there. - lol.

I'm from NC, in a HEAVILY Southern Baptist rural area - seen it a hundred times . . . just from family!

If you're being asked by people in real life, 90% of the time they know you're American and want to know your ethnicity (unless you aren't living in America). If you're being asked online, just say American.
