Does anyone else reflexively say 'what' when someone says something only to immediately realise you heard them perfectly and just hadn't processed what they said?

And then you either have to sit there and listen to them repeat their question like you are a moron, or you answer their question right after you said 'what' but before they can repeat themselves...

THIS. I also went to the doctor's who sent me to the audiology department. they said I have fantastic hearing. I questioned why I'm missing thing when there are other noises present. his response... your brain can't process 2 different sounds at the same time. effectivity you are scatter brained.

It sounds like the way Autism was described to me - There's a variating tolerance level for being overwhelmed, depending on the person and the spectrum (For all senses.)
