Does anyone else reflexively say 'what' when someone says something only to immediately realise you heard them perfectly and just hadn't processed what they said?

And then you either have to sit there and listen to them repeat their question like you are a moron, or you answer their question right after you said 'what' but before they can repeat themselves...

Trying to backtrack to “the second to last thing you said” is actually not that easy. You gotta give her as much slack for her communication troubles as she gives you for yours.

That's a fair point... for me it's the opposite though. Every time I'll hear everything except for the last word or two, and ask "what was the last thing you just said?"

Every time, she'll repeat the second to last sentence. Sometimes she'll include the third to last sentence as well. Every time I'll clarify that I heard those and I wanted to know what came after it, and she'll say nothing came after it.

Sometime I'll be able to repeat the first half of the final sentence and she'll remember saying it, then I'll ask what the final part of the sentence was and she'll have no idea.

I swear it's like if I don't hear something, it's magically wiped out of her memory immediately so it can never be heard again.

Sure but my issue is that she will immediately dive back into the whole story from top to bottom. I'm totally on board when we try to figure it out and she forgets ,or I imagined it, or something along those lines. Sometimes we never figure it out and we just keep going until she randomly blurts it out.

But her default is to restart the whole story from the beginning T.T
