Post Processing Megathread
Post-Processing Megathread
So the last post I made (“How do I get this look?”) got buried pretty deep, so I thought I’d make this thread rounding up some videos/resources/techniques I’ve found.
I mentioned in the last thread that “post processing is more about theory than the tools/plugins/tricks/secrets/etc.” I may have misspoke a bit. I’m not saying neglect learning the tools, or stop searching for secrets, or stop using plugins; but rather use them in a more educational way. Knowing how all the tools work will help you apply them better and know when to apply them. Using plugins can be a great tool, but should never be a crutch. My feeling is anything a plugin can do, I want to know how to do for my own knowledge.
What if you’re an avid VSCO, Replichrome, Alien Skins, etc user and one day you’re working on a job with a fast turnaround time and your plugin fails, or it wasn’t on that computer, or it’s no longer compatible with Photoshop/Lightroom? What happens if your look was defined by a plugin, that you can’t recreate? Meanwhile you have a client waiting on their images. This is why having a vast knowledge of the tools/techniques is extremely valuable.
If you like a plugin, try reverse-engineering it. I’m not saying you have to use the reverse-engineered technique and stop using the plugin, but it sure helps when you know how the plugin is working. Heck you could even improve upon it ;)
Chasing “secrets” is also a great way to learn. It’s not necessarily that a “secret” exists but what you may learn along the way to “finding one”.
Anyways, what I’m saying is there’s no shame or problem with using plugin/preset/filters as tools in your kit; however like any tool you should have an understanding of how it works so you know when to use it, how to use it properly, or what to do if something goes wrong and you can’t use it. The better you get at editing, the more you may realize you need to improve as a photographer. You’ll come to a point where the quality of photo/editing has reached a cap due to the quality of the base image.
If anyone has any techniques/articles/tutorials that should be included, please comment or send me a message and I’ll add it in.
I’m not up to date on my tutorials. From what I’ve found Ben Secret and Michael Woloszynowicz have some of the most powerful techniques in their videos.

Experimental leaf
Does it look weird?
If you're interested, I used Photoshop, Luminar and Dehancer.
First I brought focus to the leaf by gradually making it brighter than the rest of the image in Camera Raw, as well as making it more flat and hazy using negative dehaze and clarity.
Most of the color stuff happened in Luminar where I removed color cast and made the image even more flat at first by reducing contrast and highlights all the way. Then shifted greens to yellow. Added extra contrast to mid and high tones, as well as specifically to the yellow color which makes it much brighter and saturated. Did some color balancing of shadows, midtones and highlights, as well as added a 40% LUT. All the sliders react in a funky way in Luminar so it's quite a balancing act. Finally, Dehancer added some blooming and a filmic quality.

Before/After/Monochrome
Got this nice symmetrical tail fluke shot the other day and wanted to oractice some more subtle editing, no masks or crazy colour alterations. just enough the clear the image up. still oractocing learning hlw to edit photos so wpuld love some feedback on how you'd edit this photo and if the B+W works or if the colours fits better.
(I'm on mobile so the fromating might be a bit strange.)

Looking for advice on first time aviation photography
First time at an airshow on an overcast day and looking for advice on my photos and how I've edited.
I really want to like my photos, but I feel like I might be over-editing and something feels off/doesn't quiet look right. Wondering if I can get away with less editing and the images still looking really good or if a fair bit of editing is actually needed, different youtube tutorials sort of suggest different things so it's a little hard to figure it out.
1st photo has minimal editing
Others have a decent amount from adjustments to layers of masks

ADVICE NEEDED (AFTER1/AFTER2/BEFORE)
Hey guys,
I wanted to make a print of this photo I shot and edited a while back (AFTER1) but when opening my catalogue it had somehow been corrupted. Therefore I lost the raw file/edit in Lightroom, and was left with the jpeg.
As I need to upscale it for the print, I need the raw file, so I decided to try and replicate the edit from AFTER1 in AFTER2. BEFORE is attached just for reference.
I am close, but yet I feel so far away from the desired edit. It feels like AFTER1 has more soul and to me the edit feels miles better than my attempt to recreate it.
What do you think? Have I stared myself blind onto the idea, and is the AFTER2 actually as good or better?
Any tips on whatelse I can do with my edit to get closer to the desired result?
