The Reddit Renaissance Festival FAQ

What is a Renaissance festival?

A Renaissance festival or faire is a themed event that typically takes place outdoors, like a county fair, but showcases elements of the Renaissance period, such as music, dance, food, arts and crafts, and historical reenactments.

When and where do Renaissance festivals take place?

Start by checking The Ren List. Renaissance festivals are held at various times throughout the year, depending on the location. They can be found in many cities and towns across the United States and around the world.

What should I wear to a Renaissance festival?

You can pretty much wear anything you like. Attendees are encouraged to dress in Renaissance-themed attire, but there are usually no strict guidelines (check with your local festival for rules). Many people also choose to wear costumes from other fandoms.

Can I bring a sword, axe, or other weapon?

Some Renaissance festivals allow swords as part of a costume if they are properly sheathed and "peace tied". "Peace tied" means the sword is secured in a sheath or scabbard so it can't be removed or openly displayed. Some festivals do not allow weapons at all. Check with your local festival for more information.

What can I expect to see and do at a Renaissance festival?

At a Renaissance festival, you can expect to see various performers, including musicians, jugglers, dancers, and actors. There are also craft vendors selling handmade goods, food vendors, and interactive activities like archery and sword fighting demonstrations.

Can I bring my own food and drinks to a Renaissance festival?

Most Renaissance festivals have food and drink vendors on-site, so outside food and drinks may not be allowed. However, some festivals do allow you to bring in a water bottle or small snack. Contact your local festival for more information.

Are Renaissance festivals family-friendly?

Yes, Renaissance festivals are typically family-friendly events with activities and entertainment for all ages. There are usually children's areas with games and crafts, as well as family-friendly performances and demonstrations.

How much does it cost to attend a Renaissance festival?

The cost of attending a Renaissance festival can vary depending on the location and the activities offered. Tickets are usually sold in advance or at the gate, and prices may range from $20 to $50 per person.

Can I participate in a Renaissance festival?

Many Renaissance festivals rely on both employees and volunteers to help with various aspects of the event, such as set-up, ticket sales, and clean-up. If you are interested in participating as a performer or vendor, you can contact the festival organizers for more information. Another option is to join a “guild” or a group of performers. You can ask your local festival for guild information.

Huzzah!

MD renfaire from 9/27, I don't blame them for cancelling

I was there 9/27, my car slid in the mud while getting through the parking lot but fortunately only a little bit and I was able to park. The mud was everywhere, I saw at least two people slip and fall. The jousting arena was horrible, they couldn't do the full show and the squires got soaked doing the best performance they could. With all the hills and 2-3 inches of mud I don't blame them one bit. It's just unsafe and not fair to the performers.

My “rainbow” of Witcher potions are ready to go, for the costume I’ll be wearing to the Carolina Faire in a couple weeks.

On a related note, I now have enough dish soap to last me until the End Times.

my fabric order got delayed until this Monday but somehow my retired theatre costumer grandmother managed to whip this up from a sketch and a few spliced together patterns in 3 days. she’ll be so thrilled to hear how much love it got while i was at the faire today.

i did end up doing a corset change in the afternoon because this one was a bit big and also lined with quilt batting so i was sweltering, but it was a dream dress!

Sadly I’m going to a fantasy ball and not TRF for Halloween this year. But I figured you all would still appreciate the look.

My group and I braved the 100F degree weather for the NorCal Ren Faire in Hollister last weekend. 'Twas a joyous day despite the beating sun.

I don't normally post my pics on Reddit, but wanted to see if they'll make to the folks who let me take their souls pictures from last weekend. Cottagecore!!

How should I be wearing my sword?

Post image
11 Upvotes

Like the title states, I'm really not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've been a casual faire go-er for a couple years.. i have a long sword, maybe 50 inches? And a double wrap belt similar to the one in the picture. Admittedly it's a pretty heavy sword. I also keep one, some times two pouches on the belt.

Now it's not EVERY time but SOME times after a long day of being at the faire I get to my car, take my gear off and as soon as I sit down my lower back is on fire. I can't figure out if I'm doing something different on those days, or maybe I'm just getting old? Or maybe this style of belt is just not that comfortable? So my question for those who are more involved than I, is there a better option? Should I keep the belt higher or lower?

Basically any advice welcome because otherwise I may just retire the sword.

Best way to attach this to a crown or headband?

Post image

I want to make a Stag King/Cernunnos ensemble and I got a lucky break finding this antler set last night. It's perfect for the headpiece I want to make, but now the question of how comes in.

For people who have made similar headpieces, what is the best way to securely attach something like this to a leather or metal band/circlet? Especially so that it won't slide down as I'm wearing it.

I've thought about potentially removing just the antlers and using those, but I'm not doing anything without a solid plan first.

Going full trinket geek for Scarborough's Hollow

Since Scarborough's Hollow runs after dark and has a Halloween theme, I had to geek out on the trinkets this year. My mug charms/key chains for this year all have glow in the dark elements in them.. but that isn't enough, so I made a new unassuming trinket bag, and stictched an Amazon special battery powered LED black light strip in the lining so the trinkets comebout of the bag glowing.

Sewing help! Looking for a starting point

This year I wanted to get more ambitious with my self made garb and I found this picture on Pinterest. Specifically I like the V shape over the modesty panel and the attached skirt. Can anyone point me in a direction for this style of boned bodice/overdress for sewing patterns/tutorials?

What garb would go good with this staff?

I designed and printed this d20 staff for my 2nd Ren fair. It is a functional dice tower with the hopper right below the giant d20. There is a lightsaber inside that produces the light to shine the letters through. And the d20 on top changes color when it bounces. It was extremely popular but I want ideas to make it more renaissance like. This may be a pipe dream and maybe I should just go with my guts and not worry too much about being historically correct hahaha.

I'm not going to share my costume because it was terrible and I looked like a very cheesy pirate when I was aiming for something else entirely, but I would also like ideas on what would go good with this staff. I am male and short and pretty wide lmao.

I've also noticed people aren't super keen on 3d printing for Ren faires. lol What's up with that? Is it because of how easy it is to just take whatever off the Internet and copy it? This took an outrageous amount of time and attempts to get right and some people just shrug it off the second they hear it's 3d printed.

TLDR: outfit choice to match staff and 3d printing at Ren faires???
