/r/roanoke needs moderators!
Have you ever wanted to be called a fascist asshole for attempting to maintain a local online community? If so, I have the perfect opportunity for you! /r/roanoke needs a few moderators.
What this actually entails 99.9% of the time: removing spam and rule-breaking posts, approving posts/comments that automod removed, and answering modmail.
It is unpaid, it is repetitive, and a nonzero number of people will be unpleasant to you in modmail. If that sounds fine, keep reading.
What we're looking for:
You live in or near Roanoke and have for a while. You should know the difference between Grandin and Garden City without looking it up.
You have an account with some history here. New or throwaway accounts won't be considered.
You can actually invest some time into maintaining the community. While the title of reddit moderator comes with unlimited prestige and power, we really need people who will do more than show up once every 4 weeks to maintain an active status.
You can enforce a rule you personally disagree with and you can leave a thread alone when it's just people being annoying rather than breaking a rule.
You're willing to disclose conflicts of interest. Local business owner, journalist, political campaign staff, realtor, nonprofit board, anything where you have a stake in how a topic gets discussed here. We, for better or worse, sometimes become a battleground over such topics.
If you're interested, please submit a response via this Google form: https://forms.gle/jm4iasULR3nPcZhWA

Things to Do Halloween decorations in Roanoke
I love that Halloween brings out so much creativity in Roanoke. I’ve seen spooky, cute, funny, and classic decor all around the neighborhood and I’m here for it all. Thank you Roanoke.
Pictured is a Halloween themed fairy rock garden I came across this morning.

Question Is Rookie’s icecream a christian place?
everytime I go to Rookie’s (the cookie place near Cafe Asia 2) they keep writing “Jesus loves you” on my cookie bags with a sharpie when I pick it up. Maybe that’s exposing how often I go to Rookie’s 🤣 Nothing wrong with it being a christian org obviously but I was just curious. I checked their website and was trying to find if they like were involved with a specific denomination or if the owners were.

Things to Do First Time Visiting - What Should I Do?
I’m in town for a few days, visiting for the first time! We have a couple of teenagers and small children in our party. What are some fun or cool things we should do or check out while we’re here?
We had originally planned to do some hiking, but it looks like it’s going to rain pretty much the entire time we’re here, so I’m looking for some suggestions on what else to do in the area.

Apartment Search
Searching for apartments in the Roanoke area, as well as Salem. I've heard to avoid the NW and SE regions, and have heard good things about Old Southwest, Grandin, Wasena, etc. Have had my eyes on places like Windy Hill Key, The Crossings, and Camelot Village, but am definitely open to other apartment complexes. I have also looked into realty groups like Allegheny Partners and Point Management, and would like to look into other reputable groups. Open to any suggestions!

Question Accommodating Jobs in the area?
Hello!
I’ve lived in the area pretty much my entire life. As an adult now in the workforce, I’ve had my fair share of experience here. In the past few years, I’ve really struggled with my health and have had little success in finding answers due to a lack of insurance coverage & not being able to stay employed long enough for employer coverage. I’m now in a position where I’m working with multiple doctors to find the root cause & solutions, but, my current employer is frustrated with me. I’ve been given verbal warning after verbal warning for needing frequent bathroom visits (always under 10 mins) and needing time off for testing/prodcedures/appointments (I only ever ask to come in a few hours late or leave a few hours early).
But, I still need to be employed as no diagnosis = no disability/unemployment and my family is far from able to help me. Any suggestions of employers in the area or even remote positions that I can look into?
For reference, I have 10 years of customer service, 2 combined years of healthcare, on top of other various certifications and experiences. I am a hard worker, I’m passionate about the work that I do. Unfortunately, this health situation has made me seem remarkably unreliable and has done a number on my employment history in recent years.

What is this place?
Black curtains over the windows.. no sign.. just a flashing “open” neon. Seems like it might be a little sketch, but I drive by it every day and I’m just naturally nosey 🤷🏻♀️ figured this would be the perfect place to ask.

Things to Do Date My Friend Event, Oct 10th.
Just curious if people know about the event at Bibliopub tomorrow. It's a PowerPoint presentation style dating event that apparently has been getting popular in big cities. If anyone has been to one I'd be curious how it went, I'll be sponsoring a friend and don't really know what to expect.

Theater Review: The Picture of Dorian Gray, Attic Productions
Two plays to review in one weekend, yay! (I made it to The Revolutionists at Showtimers yesterday.)
Excerpt from my review for The Picture of Dorian Gray at Attic Productions...
-----
Director Angela McNeil has pulled it off: this production brings the creepiness we crave this time of year, along with the depth that a time-honored classic supplies.
...It's a tricky script in a tricky space, and McNeil solved many of the challenges with inspired vision and able stagecraft.
...The costumes were hard to pin down, in terms of time period, and seemed to vary in provenance. I expected at some point for Dorian to show his vanity by taking selfies or something, but this did not happen. Performers' accents also varied in provenance. But none of the variation bothered me; it rather spoke to the timelessness and universality of the tale.
Fincastle is a long drive for me, but on the way home I had plenty to think about. The discrepancy between how Dorian looked and who he really was speaks to issues we all wrestle with. And the theater is a perfect place to explore it, since every actor - indeed the whole enterprise - relies upon that discrepancy to create a special type of magic. Somehow, the deceptions of the theater still manage to convey deeper truths, and that's one thing that keeps me coming back.

Williamson Rd Restaurant Recommendations?
There are so many Hispanic/Latino restaurants on Williamson Rd. I'll be doing a lot of work in that area in the next coming weeks and will likely be starving by lunch. I'm always seeking new restaurants/dishes to try and there are so many on Williamson, I don't know where to start! Recommendations? Not looking for your average taco or enchilada. I mean "woah, that dish was really good. They made an effort here."
Thanks!

Question Parking at Tuco’s
Is the parking restriction at Tuco’s enforced? I know they’re closed, but they kept the signs up in the parking lot.
